Just curious is Anet has said anything about the skill point that some players have in their home instances? Will that be converted to one of these hero challenges or do they have something different planned for it?

The Krait Obelisk Shard gives one Skill Point per character, only. It may give the one Hero Point, or just charge Quartz Crystals in the future. I’m not sure the one Hero Point would be a make-or-break issue, either way.

But, no, no official word on whether the one Hero Point will be obtainable from the Shard.

“Old skill points in excess of those earned by leveling and skill challenges will be converted into crafting materials for the Mystic Forge. Items and activities that were previously repeatable sources of skill points will now also provide that same crafting material.”
