So, for the older accounts..
You might find some old copies of GW2 on shelves in retail stores. Then, if she likes core Tyria, you can purchase HoT, as well, for as little as $50.
Good luck.
Nope, you get no separate game key you can give her. Anet is only doing what other MMO companies have been doing already like WoW and EQ. They’re taking away barriers to entry.
The idea is, right now to start playing Guild Wars 2 you’d have to buy 2 games, which is a lot more than some people would want to spend. After another expansion you’d need to be 3 games. It becomes harder and harder to start playing. But no MMO can survive without new players, since they all have natural attrition. So getting new players into the game helps veteran players quite a bit.
Every expansion from now on will include all previous expansions with it. That’s how it’s going to be.
What do you get for buying the game early instead of waiting? Well, you get to play it of course. I suppose you could wait eight, nine years for the final expansion and get them all, but in my mind the game is worth the money.
Will the GW2 game, sans expansion, have its own key? If anyone has a clue. Maybe feel a little shafted that older accounts are paying $50 for the expansion, but newer ones can get a refund. But whatever, it’s a business.
Anyways, yeah. I’m wondering if anyone knows the answer. My girlfriend is apprehensive about spending money on MMO’s, and I’m curious if there’ll be a separate game key I could give to her.
Amazon is selling the core game for about $23.
See this thread (amongst others) for existing discussions of this topic.

The $50 paid is one of two categories (unless it’s changed, they’ve changed so many things):
1) You are a brand new player to the game, your $50 gets you the expansion + the core game (you can look at it like $40 for expansion, $10 for core game—as they’ve had the core game on sale for $10 before).
2) You are a veteran to the game, your $50 gets you the expansion + free character slot ($40 for expansion, $10 for character slot).
Someone correct me if they’ve changed anything.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
