Okay so Rylock is transformed, comes back as a Revenant. It’s part of the Living Story.

We now get to start a character as a Revenant. Any race. From the beginning.

Which means we get to face Zhaitan as a Revenant, when in theory that precedes the introduction of Revanant to the world. It really is like rewriting history.

Stuff like this always annoys me.

What if Rytlock was trained by someone (either one person, or an organization) in the Mists, who is added or mentioned earlier in the game (1325 AE) to explain how new Revenants are made prior to 1327?

Plenty of ways to explain it, if they want to.

Well, since the mists are dislocated from time, the revenant could be immune to paradox. Perhaps Rytlock’s unlocking of Revenant powers causes other Revenants to emerge from the mists throughout the time stream.

Who knows what will happen. Maybe the new Revenant Chars will have a own new personal story regardless of race?

Maybe a personal story explaining how they are learning their profession?

I remember in Guild Wars 1 going to another campaign as a new profession caused the character to be allowed to experience a flashback of what occurred. Maybe something similar?

If the whole “Mists’ time is asynchronous” thing comes into play, yeah.

What’s strange about Revs is no other Profession is given any detail or backstory when it comes to your character. Much more focus is placed on your backstory and personality. You can be a noble Human Warrior who never searched for his true parents, or a noble Human Ranger who never searched for his true parents; nothing will be different story-wise. But if Revenants are being created by a specific lore event, that makes Revenants more important lore-wise, and they might need some explanation.

Obviously Revenant characters shouldn’t be allowed to participate in old content.

Seriously though, gameplay mechanics > lore. There really doesn’t need to be an explanation. Just like the fact that there doesn’t need to be an explanation for replaying Arah and re-defeating Zhaitan at a whim.

You know, Rytlock isn’t exactly a level 1 character when he enters the mists. Maybe you have to take a level 80 and turn it into a level 1 Revenant?

I think most people have the right idea here. The Revenant is going to be something of the Mists, which connect to all periods of time and space equally. A Revenant could start the game at max level due to this, because they could have trained in the Mists to that point. Or a Revenant could be one of those lost people who entered the mists and never exited, finally finding their way out after untold amounts of personal time passing. The knowledge of what it is to be a Revenant could even be separate from the concept of “levels”, allowing a level one person to gain said knowledge and THEN begin their evolution and gaining of experience, each separate from the other.

I believe Rytlock is Champion level when he enters the Mists. Maybe Legendary…

It will be really jarring if they just plonk the Revenant into the existing personal story.

My personal hope is that they create a new personal story/modify the existing one specifically for the revenant. Change the characters from DE out of the beginning and have the order dialogue focus on Mordremoth rather than Zhaitan for the rest

Personal story is tied with race not class, you will get the same story as you would get from the race you choose.

And you could kill the lich lord with a ritualist in GW1, or shiro with a dervish. This is a common “issue” in MMOs.
But I dont find it impossible that anet made a new storyline for revenants, just like WoW made one for death knights.

I was thinking about the new profession and I kept on coming up with problems such as what OP said.

Where do they level? Where do they get their traits? The old maps or the new?
If old, will that mean people will have to level to 80 in Tyria before they can go to the new maps? Will they have the personal story that battles zhaitan?

In Guild Wars 1, each new campaign started with new chars, professions, maps, stories, and cities. I suspect ANet will do something similar. Perhaps there will be a background story in character creation that explains how a new, untried char traveled to the new area. There he chooses to become a Revenant. There could be a leveling map where the char could level to 80. If split into 3 biomes, the bottom biome could be 1-26. The middle, 27-52. The upper, 53-80. Once they hit 80 they can leave the map and access the level 80 content. There will be no Zhaitan story line for these chars as their history begins after Zhaitan’s death.

All other professions from the old content could start immediately in the new level 80 content.

There may not need to be an explanation for people who focus on mechanics. But a percentage of people focus on lore and story and couldn’t give two shakes about mechanics.

When people complain about those things I don’t tell them it’s okay it’s not ruining my story.

You guys should be more open minded, because it will bother a percentage of players.

I think we have to consider our personal story as “ours” (i.e. the character per se), not as “this profession’s character” (i.e. our Ranger-necro-whatever character). Profession doesn’t have anything to do with PS.

In this way, whichever class your character is, it doensn’t break lore, and we can get new classes (revenant in this instance, and maybe more in the future).

I know they said that Rytlock is ‘the first one’ and that happens only during LS2 but I think we have to take that statement out of context: of course he’s the first because, well, we can’t be revenants just yet in game… but that doens’t mean that lorewise revenants don’t exists already.

Sorry for my english, I don’t know if you guys get what I’m saying ^^""

In Guild Wars 1, players who made characters in the expansions received a message when completing a mission that they were never supposed to be able to experience in a different campaign.

Like going to Shing Jea Island to complete missions on a character from Nightfall.

Something like
“You are about to experience events which occurred prior to your arrival in Cantha”

etc.
