Apologies if this topic is a repeat, the search function sucks. So I saw this kinda done in another part of the forum but wanted to lay it out nicely here and see what you all thought.
The “Specializations” are really just a secondary profession, similar to what we had in GW1. So assuming that each main class will have another main as part of their specialization, and further assuming there will be no repetition of classes, here is my list of confirmed and speculated classes with corresponding secondary professions:
1. Ranger/Ele (uses staff in trailer)
2. Mesmer/Necro (has wells)
3. Guardian/Ranger (long bow and traps)
4. Necro/Warrior (shouts and great sword)
5. Engineer/Guardian (we saw use of a hammer and guard hammer skill #2 in the trailer)
6. Ele/Thief or Mesmer (both use sword, my guess is Mes, E/Me was popular in GW)
7. Thief/Engi (warrior already used, process of elimination on other classes with rifle)
8. Warrior/Thief or Mesmer (My guess is Thief and that they will get dagger)
Thoughts?

Don’t forget the revenant.

I seriously hope thieves don’t get rifle because if they did they’d have more ranged weapon skills than melee

known
1.mes/nec
2.guardian/rng
3.nec/war
4.rng could be /mes /ele /rev /guardian, based on the staff.
5.engi could be /grd /rev based on hammer
6.ele could be /mes /grd /thf /rev (based on sword)
7.thief /eng
8.war ?
9.rev ?
overall, i think your ideas are right, but there is a bit more room due to rev
I seriously hope thieves don’t get rifle because if they did they’d have more ranged weapon skills than melee
what would you want them to get?
anyhow, its fairly likely it was a theif in the promo video with a rifle. It could theoretically be an engineer, but they dressed it in a style that is more thief like than engineerish
+ though they have ranged its all short range.

I am not including Revenant as one of the classes to be a “secondary profession” on purpose. It is a special type of character and I don’t see it getting this specialization/secondary prof treatment now if ever.
Rev won’t get mixed with another class, I’m pretty sure druid is ranger/ele,engi will get mixed with guard and thief with engi. Ele and war are tricky or maybe not really but it would make history if war gets mixed with mesmer I mean DH is normal to me but war/mesmer would be…WHOAH!!!

I agree with most of them. I personally think that elementalist will get new skills from guardian or from revenant, hm I think those two professions are much tied to the elementalists in terms of skills, I mean, I can’t see an elementalist using a mantra, a glamour or a manipulation skill (I just think ) The same happens with warrior; I guess they’ll get a main-hand pistol with thief’s skills (the trick ones). Now what really gets my attention is what they’re going to give the revenant…maybe elementalists’?

they did say it will have an elite specialization, with an extra weapon.

I suppose we can speculate on names too, based on the secondary profession:
1. Mesmer: Chronomancer
2. Guardian: Dragonhunter
3. Necromancer: Reaper
4. Ranger: Spiritualist SPECULATION
5. Engineer: Sapper SPECULATION
6. Elementalist: Tempest (SPECULATION but commonly accepted)
7. Thief: Commando SPECULATION
8. Warrior: Samurai SPECULATION
Ranger is called Druid,it has been confirmed for some time now.
Tempest is also confirmed by the way. iirc they showed it on Stream.
Commando…I think it will stay as a joke profession forever, like Minstrel. The Mesmer spec could very well be Minstrel but I think they would never do it because it is already seen as a joke profession and (I’m speaking for me with this) I would never take it seriously lol
@Ontopic
I don’t think anyone will mix with Revenant because it is new.
Now,I would guess Revenant is going to be mixed with Elementalist or Necromancer (but the Summoning part of Necromancer, not Wells, since Mesmer already got them)

Engineers have almost exclusively ranged skills

Tempest is no longer speculation. It was confirmed on the 4hr trait stream that it is the ele spec name.
Saying Reaper is Necro/warrior is a bit naive. There are 3 classes with shouts and a greatsword. Warrior, guardian and ranger. Could just as easily be considered Necro/guard.

Likewise, just because mes has wells doesn’t mean they’re mixed 1:1 with necro. Mes gets shield access, and could just as easily be construed as warrior or engi. Specializations aren’t 1:1 secondary professions, but rather a way to create brand new playstyles for each class. Just because dragon hunter has a longbow and traps doesn’t mean they will play at all similar to a ranger with lb and traps.
Dragonhunter is probably going to be the only elite spec which translates that well as a dual profession.

I think Revenant specialization will be done differently then the others.
1) Revenant, I feel, already will feel like combination of cross professions with their different Legends their gonna tap into to.
2) I think each specialization or trait line will focus on a Legend. Since their are 5 core specialization their their might be 5 Legends that you can start with.
3) I think each elite specialization will simply be a new Legend that they can tap into.

Wow, naive? That’s rude…. I am aware that warrior, guard and ranger have shouts and a GS; ranger has GS but their shouts are just pet related, and a large part of the new necro spec is shouts that effect more than their minions (pets). Although the concept of shouts doing dmg is new and not seen in other classes so you have a bit of a valid point, but ranger is already used in Dragonhunter. And I really think the Engi is getting more of a guard aspect with their hammer. I could be wrong, this is all a guessing game.

I think Anet liked the idea of playing with the similarity in the names….
ChronoMANCER
NecroMANCER
They also obviously wanted a fan pleaser by bringing back the shield and Chronomancer that GW1 players recognize. I like that they are not direct secondary professions as in GW1, but I think it is a tip of the hat toward that aspect of GW1… and a lot of us were kinda disappointed when we learned that GW2 didn’t have secondary prof and also were stuck to certain weapons for each class. The Mesmer class has a lot of old GW1 fans who came over to GW2 to play the same class and were perhaps a bit miffed that the class operated so differently.
I can see the Revenant getting spirits like the Ranger already has. However his spirits would differ a bit from the Ranger`s. This would really remind me of kinda ritualist from GW1, would be really cool and somehow logical as well, regarding the revenants lore. On top of that, the ranger is the only profession able to use spirits and judging from what we have seen so far, every profession adapts some machanic from another. So i can see the revenant most likely adapting the Ranger`s spirits mechanic.

It will be interesting to see how they tackle the Revenant elite spec. On one side, the revealed specs all come with a full set of skills from a single existing type. On the other hand though, the Revenant core specs don’t affect skill types so much as they affect the legends. I’m leaning towards them simply getting a new legend as opposed to a new set of a specific skill type.
What do you think about their profession mechanic change though? I think it will be related to energy as opposed to legend swapping. For example maybe we trade starting at 50% energy on swap for a faster regen speed or gain 100% energy on swap but have little to no regen.
Saying Reaper is Necro/warrior is a bit naive. There are 3 classes with shouts and a greatsword. Warrior, guardian and ranger. Could just as easily be considered Necro/guard.
Its generally the theme as well as the other things. guardian doesnt really line up that well since it is very anti boon sharing, and not really focused on team mitigation.
mesmer shield was a rare case they said, where the weapon was the last part of the class. None of the weapons they could get from necro would really have made them feel more necro like, axe, dagger, warhorn are very loosely necro like in their use.
wells, and the mechanic that allows you to go back to a previous state/step out of your current situation for a limited time, is the necro like part of chrono.

Not at all ranger is already used, elite specializations keep a certain theme of the main class they are mixed with, it can’t be guard due to the executioner style similar to war GS,war shouts are more offensive then guard(none of the guard are),war facetanks…,soft cc is heavily found on war, reaper even has it’s own Dodged-March.
It’s also very likely that engi gets mixed with guardian.

Tempest being ele/mes would be…odd. It would be far too close to just plain Mesmer with a sword.
Confirmed Pistol as HoT weapon for Elementalist. It features an off-hand skill with the effect “Target player dies”. The auto-attack uses Rodger Rabbit bullets, in WvW you just shoot at the gates or walls and the bullets find their way to players(100% crit and life leech of course).

The biggest thing I would hope for, for thief specialisation is Melee Staff (like a bo) weapon. Perhaps the monkey king tonic is a teaser to it?
Secondly, probably greatsword.
Thirdly, probably axe if it’s to be one handed. Though that would also probably have some sort of ranged skill among there.

id love a bo staff as well, better yet, i would love a martial artist proffesion, unfortunately i highly doubt they will duplicate what weapons they give out.
they already gave out staff to ranger, and GS, so seems unlikely to me, but who knows.

I hope the Revenant specialization is Ritualist. Thy get access to turrets that are spirits with different abilities. One casts shackled chains that slow movement. The spirt of pain does basic auto attacks the deal damage base on how many conditions the enemy has, ect.
