sorry if the title is worded so badly but,
I have purchased the expansion and my friends have not I was just wondering what kind of things I would have that they would not, I would have liked them to join me in alot of the new things.
does getting the expansion just give you access to the new class? or are the things such as hang gliding locked out from non-buyers of the expansion?

:)

Things you only get with the expansion: New areas, new story, living story updates coming after HoT’s release, raids, elite specializations, masteries, revenant, adventures, any new item skins that are coming, any new runes or sigils coming etc.

Things all players will get: The new pvp mode, the new wvw borderlands, the various wvw changes, pvp leagues, cross-guild chat, guild leaderboards for pvp, updated fractals, the new map reward bonuses.

Things people without the expansion get limited access to: Guild halls. To unlock a guild hall, at least 5 members need to go the guild hall to liberate it from modrem. Those players need to have HoT. After it is liberated, all players (even those without HoT) can go to the guild hall. However, I think the features you can use as a non-HoT player in the guild hall are limited.

As you can see from the post above mine, and posts after mine, those would be the things exclusive to HoT purchase. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, it was confirmed that all living world updates after HoT such as season 3 will require HoT to be able to play. They are a continuation of HoT’s storyline and thus you need the expansion. Most likely you will also need the masteries and thus you need the expansion. It was stated by the dev’s it would give access to all updates after HoTs release in one of the promotional video trailers.

As for balance, elite specs are not meant to be more powerful than core specs (though some of them might become meta of course).

You are not guaranteed Living Story Updates!!!!!!

If the Living Story was included in the price, then why the kitten are previous seasons being sold in the gem store?!

Living Story episodes are only free if you log in during the week they are available.
And most likely for the next season of Living Story you will need to buy HoT in order to travel in the new maps.

If you buy HoT and forget or cannot log in during one of the weeks an episode is on, you will then have to buy it in the gem store!

So please stop listing Living Story as included in the price for HoT, it is not!

Complained about WvW before it became cool.

That’s not what they meant. People listing Living Story are not talking about season 2 and whether you get it but are talking about 3 and 4 and 5 and so on. They stated that future LS releases (season 3 etc.) would be accessible via HoT as it carries on from the end of the HoT story.

Yeas, and S1 and 2 follow on from the core game, yet you only get them for free if you log in, miss it and you have to buy on gem store.

You are not guaranteed LS S3+ just by buying HoT, just like you were not guaranteed S1/2 from buying the core game!

If you are, then S1 and 2 should not be on the gem store at all, they should be automatically added to your account!

Season 1 is not on the gem store and cannot be on the gem store.

Furthermore, season 2 can be free even if you did not unlock it when it was active. Gems can be bought via in-game gold. Even if you don’t buy it, you can play season 2 with someone who has unlocked it.

The Living Story is included in HoT, since it continues the Living Story even if there are later chapters you don’t get. You can just call it the story I guess, but it’s not because it’s a continuation of the Living Story.

Also there’s a very fine line between getting something for free and having the ability to get it for free, if you are paying attention at all.

As i understood from reading various sources:

You get Living story season 3+ chapters for free IF:
- you log in while the chapter is active (even if for just a second, you don’t have to do it in that time if it’s like season 2. Miss this probably 2 week window you can buy access in the gemstore to that chapter afterwards but it also needs HoT.)
- you have technical access to the content while it’a active (for 3+ that means you only get access if you have HoT at that time).

I hope I am wrong at this though and that even if you don’t have HoT but do log in while the LS3+ is active, you unlock it for future use, even if you can’t do it yet without HoT. But the above seems what most sources seem to say.

No, they are not for everybody.

As for balance, elite specs are not meant to be more powerful than core specs (though some of them might become meta of course).

The way they have it phrased, it looks like for PvP, HoT owners will have an automatic unlock and non owners will have reward tracks to unlock the elite specializations.

Elite Specialization Reward Tracks
Finally, these reward tracks unlock everything for an elite specialization: weapon, unique mechanics, skills, and traits. They’ll also reward items, including new runes and sigils, a fancy weapon skin for your new weapon type, and an armor skin for a single matching piece of armor (usually headgear or shoulders). As long as you’ve purchased Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, you’ll automatically unlock access to all elite specializations in PvP.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Those ‘reward tracks’ are not PvP reward tracks, they are the ‘training wheels’ you need to go through in PvE. This is saying that those with HoT in PvE have to go through the reward track, while those with HoT in PvP get the skills and traits without having to do anything.

Personally, I love the amount of work Anet put into the detailed storylines, artwork, voice-acting and such. I don’t really need it though. I have the basic game without the Living Story 1 or 2. I do, however, need Maudrey II to dig me out of this pile of Bloodstone Dust I am drowning in. After considerable time and expense, I realize that I need 2 items from quests only found in LS2. I noticed a previous post mentioned that I can participate in quests if I am in a group with someone who has LS2. Is this accurate? From other posts, it looks like the consensus is that Maudrey II will be off-limits to everyone who buys HoT only.

You can participate in the story instances of LS2, which is great for those who want to experience the story without wanting to buy LS2. However, you only get the rewards for those instances if you own LS2.
