The elite specialisations have been advertised as something you train (grind if you will) to unlock since the beginning. In sPvP only it’s instanty available.
The only thing we didn’t know was the exact height of the requirements for it. These can be too much or too litte depending on balance. The way these 400 points seem to be structured is that its basically 40 points.
It was never meant to be instantly unlocked. This is why it’s 400 and the training area grants 10-fold the points per hero challenge.
Of course, the message that it’s trained is from half a year back. And may have not been clear enough that it’s not an instant unlock.
I don’t really have any problems with a character progression system continuation for my characters tbh. It’s been part of the game (in several different forms) since the beginning.
That said, people have been level 80 max unlocked skills for a long time that they may not realise how much of it they did at the beginning. (Or quickly grinded to to get rid of it)
This obviously means that previous amount of points were giving people already clear access to said

Seriously?…
Some of you behave like a little, spoiled child when mommy shows you bag of candies and says “go clean your room first to earn it” and you’re like “kitten no, mummy, gimme that noaw!” and then you go cry cus mommy won’t give it to you insta.
A more apt analogy would be that mommy implied we’d get a bag of candies for cleaning our room, so some of us went and cleaned our room for weeks. Only for mommy to say “the room never mattered. clean the garage”.

The problem is this did not need to happen, they (Anet) are trying to force players to play content, people don’t respond well to force. You can say they gave us options such as WvW ranks but those options are laughable and unrealistic so it only really the illusion of an option.
Stop trying to force us to play the content, most of us will go out and explore the new stuff at our leisure, I don’t see the need to try and ram it down our throats.
As I said in the other post, This is suppose to be an exciting time for GW2, instead Anet has turned it into a witch hunt.
thing as like previous posters have said its effectively having us skip content.
whoever said this nailed it. Day 1 there will be skill point trains going through maguuma skipping EVERYTHING in a zerg to get the skill points. Instead of going through it at the normal or relaxed pace, it will be rushed, half of it will be skipped.
And following that train is a choice. I won’t be following it. I’ll just play the game.
Games have rules. All of them. The rules are in place for reasons. You want the game to play by your rules. So do other people. But every time Anet plays by someone’s rules, someone else will be in your shoes.
There’s no way Anet can make a decision for the game that doesn’t run into this problem. So sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you.
If you play this game for a year, and it takes you 2 weeks to unlock the spec, you’ll be playing that spec for 50 weeks.
This isn’t even big enough to be a molehill. It’s just what you want. Well I want to work towards it. Shrugs.
Other changes have been bad for me, that might be good for you.

IF core world map completion will grant full access to skills and traits for elite specs then I have no issue with the system at all. Indeed, I’d be quite happy with it because discovering runes, sigils, and skins gradually through the expansion might be quite cool. However the blog post from Colin suggests that might not be the case and that characters will still need to complete hero challenges in HoT maps in order to gain access to skills and traits … and that I’m NOT happy about. I want to play the new elite specs and I want to experience HoT properly but I know that the Elites will take precedence for me and that I’ll most likely just blitz through the content in order to get to hero challenges which will be a terrible shame. If there’s grinding to be done then I’m very happy to do it in the core world but I don’t want getting an elite spec to eclipse the experience of playing through the new HoT zones.

Yes, this is a great analogy. In fact, I had been collecting hero points in preparation, but as soon as I heard the 400 pt requirement, I actually lost all incentive to keep doing so. The fact that HoT hero challenges give 10 points makes the core game’s 1-point challenges feel ultimately pointless, and I feel sorry for anyone who went through getting all of them in futile preparation.

I think it time people took a deep breath and a reality check. We are talking about a GAME here. You know? Something people do for fun in their spare time. It is not a life changing vocation.
Surely, when a game is no longer considered fun by the person playing it, they can simply walk away and find something else to do with their free time? Nobody is forcing anyone to play GW2 if they don’t want to so why do so many insist on QQing about every little change?
Jeez, gamers are so weird

It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun; and of course, it doesn’t have a monthly fee.

As to communication, I doubt they are doing any major development right now. If they were smart the drop-dead date was earlier and now they are just waiting for the rollout. They will know there will be undiscovered problems so some people will be out to cover the weekens and many of the rest will be on standby so using flex time right now.
Note I did not say everyone. The only question is if the right people (like Colin) are available.

Yeah this…
I always ask myself “is it fun?” while doing stuff like using free time to play video games. There is enough stress in real life and people don’t need to be given more work and chores to do while they are trying to unwind. Of course I understand the nature of mmos sometimes, but the way this particular topic is being handled is very anti-fun.

Some of you behave like a little, spoiled child when mommy shows you bag of candies and says “go clean your room first to earn it” and you’re like “kitten no, mummy, gimme that noaw!” and then you go cry cus mommy won’t give it to you insta.
Yea, sure, let’s get all instant. Burn the expansion in one weekend and complain that you have nothing to do, “bad anet, I’m bored, no content, refund me”.
And where is the “earning” part of the game? Achieving something? Actually playing the game? Feel like you earned something, worked on getting it.
In most of mmos’ expansions you get new levels for your character and you have to gain experience for them. You have to hit those levels to unlock new skills. Here you do something like that by earning hp to unlock new stuff by just running around new maps. Problem?
And yes, if you feel so much urge to try elites – go to HotM and try it. Insta.
This solution is way more interesting than boring constant lvl cap rise each expansion like in other mmos. You work hard to gain that shiny end-game gear then you have to throw it away cus new lvls.
Like, really. If you do not enjoy playing the game, don’t. The way Anet made it is to get all the stuff while playing new content. Actually playing only a part of it – run through maps, have fun exploring a bit and gain those bunch of points. Especially that you unlock basic stuff by just using 60 points. And 1 challenge = 10 points in new maps.
How about Revenant you say – disadvantage cus new characters, blablabla. If you really need it so fast, you must have gathered tomes of knowledge and xp boosters. You’ll get enough hp to unlock most of stuff, then do 6 hero challenges in maguma (I bet one hour? Perhaps two?) and you get your elite.
Some say it’s more about a journey then a destination. I rly enjoy the idea of working for all of this stuff. It will provide hours of fun and won’t burn the expax so fast.
Incomplete product? Yeah, you pay once for – probably – 2 years of fun and constant patches that will evolve the game. I would agree to this argument on subscription-based game but here? Guys, you pay once and they for sure want to give you fun for all the time before next big expansion. They just can’t hop all of the stuff at once and expect you to play it for 2 years.
Just calm down ppl, no need for this ridiculous outrage.
Cheers
That analogy was a sure fire way to get people to both listen and respect your opinion. Insulting people who disagree with you is the most sound logic I can think of if you’re trying to make them respect what you have to say.

You know, a lot of people did “earn it” via map complation, but people don’t apparently take that into account because… reasons?
Also sucks if you’re trying to be a daredevil, since your actual mechanic is locked behind grandmaster traits.

Many people are acting like those of us who are upset are being entitled and that we should have been prepared to play the content to enjoy the progression.
First off, this aspect wasn’t touted as progression. Mastery was. This was something everyone had anticipated on enjoying from the get go. This isn’t “skipping” content. Everyone here wants to play the new zones and quests with the elite spec we’ve waited months for. The sad part is that many players will have played through nearly all the novel content before they can get the elite spec. I had imagined that I’d be playing my reaper with my twilight or eternity at maguuma tomorrow night. Now I realize that I’ll be running around with that stupid dagger that has made necro so irrelevant for so long. My wife and I both made legendaries for these characters’ elite specs. We have been waiting to equip them. Alas, we will continue to wait because Anet drops a bomb on us last minute.
Secondly, we’ve a right to complain when they tell us, right before launch that the aspect that most players are most excited about has a huge amount of effort required to obtain.
Lastly, players were explicitly told that their efforts in map completion would pay off and that they’d have enough HP for elite specs. Now, right before launch, after many of us spent months gridning those stupid challenges across over a dozen characters, they tell us that our efforts were both A) not enough and absurdly inefficient because hero challenges in maguuma are worth ten times as much as they are in Tyria.
And yes, we should play the content yada yada yada. But don’t encourage your whole player base to prepare for something then pull the rug out from beneath them right before their efforts are about to pay off.

Daredevils have it the worst. And you’re totally right. If I put the effort into exploring the entire known world, I should have my elite. You can’t tell me that exploring four zones is worth more reward than exploring the known world.

Citation? Where did Anet explicitly told us full map completion would pay for a full spec, I would think most people would have complain then.

How long does it take to run a character from starter zone (or lion’s arch) to the entrance for the new places? As most of my level 80 wvw toons have like 3% map completion.
An Asura gate from LA would have been nice…

Hello, so i have a question, i have seen that you need around 400 hero points to unlock all of the elite specialization, and you get 10 points from challenges in the new expansion, but are there enogh (40 on that case) hero challenges or i have to do some old content to unlock all of the specialization?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

So after some struggles I was fine with farming hero points for the elite.. and I was okay with farming hp with my rev at launch day.. farming about 60-80 points to unlock core skills and traits..
but now you tell me I need OVER TWO HUNDRED points to unlock the basics of my herold?
so there is no point at all to run through oldtyria at launchday because I can barely get HALF points of what I need..
so what will I do on launch day?
Make my reventant, enter the jungle and rush to all the HP, ignoring every new contant I see (which I actually wanted to enjoy), just rushing through everything to get my 10hp each time until I get all the core things I need to play revenant.. and then I have kinda seen everything already but did not had the time to enjoy it.. yeah.. sounds like a lot of fun for tomorrow…
Thanks..
EDIT: you made the greatest game, you make the right balance changes nowadays.. but when it comes to knowledge of how people actually play your game and what is important to them, time and time again you show us that you have no clue about how gamers play your game or new contant for that matter..
we want the new stuff and we want it fast, its okay to have it behind some softlock like playing the game or unlocking stuff through the story.. but hiding new stuff behind an old system that is REQUIRED placed in a new map? thats neither smart thinking nor is it a fun experience to play.. EVERYONE will ignore the great new map you made, because we only care for the old system in there (HP)

Unless something is time limited you’re not forced to rush through anything. If you do so you really have no one to blame but yourself when your experience is “ruined”.

I really can’t feel sorry for those people. Nobody ever said that doing World Completion will grant a big advantage to Espec unlock, ever. People assumed it would and played accordingly.
But in the end it was their choice to think they were more clever to do so. It turns out to not be the case…. but why being angry or sorry?
People chose this and made mistakes. If they want to be angry it should be against themselves for not having the good intuition. And even there I’m not sure anger is a good answer. People bet on something, they lost… never mind.
In my guild, we are many to have tried to guess which sigils/runes will gain value upon HoT release and bought them to make some profit. It is funny to guess. In the end we will maybe loose money but it is not a good reason to feel, cheated/sorry/angry. We placed bet on things, maybe we were wrong. Those who don’t want to be disappointed should better not bet on anything.
Espec unlock was always “obscured by the mists” so if people regret having chased hero point for month in preparation of the expansion instead of doing something else it is their own problem, life is a matter of choice. If one thinks to be more clever than the rest of the world he takes the risk of being disappointed at some point.

Go do that if you are in such a rush. Although I bought HoT I won’t even visit the jungle on Friday because I’ll be busy dealing with the Mad King. Unless there is a hidden time limit for the heart of maguuma that I know nothing about, it’s pointless to rush through. Just enjoy the journey.

Pretty much this.
Rushing things is the reason why a game gets pretty boring pretty fast. AFAIK, raids won’t be out until a few weeks later, so there isn’t even a point in rushing things.

As far as I am aware, you gain enough HPs through the basic levelling process to complete all core skills and traits. After that there are, I believe has been said, sufficient hero challenges in the HoT zones to fully unlock an eSpec … assuming you complete them all. How simple or otherwise it will be to complete all challenges in the new zones is unknown at the moment as there were none available in the beta content. However it is likely that at least some of the challenges will be gated behind mastery tracks. It is vanishingly unlikely that completing all 40 HoT challenges will be a trivial matter.

So maybe we will have all the hero point challenges lined up at the zone entrance for us?

No one wants the Elite spec to be their prize for completing HoT, we all want to play HoT with the Elite Specs. So for those who have not done world competition learning that we have to play though about 70% of HoT before being able to max trait lines and play the spec is infuriating.
As you will learn over the coming days, what the OP is planning to do Everyone else will be doing also!!! People want the Elite Specs. Yes we want the new maps and story narrative too, but for most the Elite Specs are the biggest part of what lured us in. Even for those who want the story a good number want to experience HoT from the beginning playing as something new. Most will hop on the train with players who jump in and do nothing but grind hero challenges for the first few weeks (or months for the more casuals) before unlocking their Elite Spec then go back and do the instanced story.
A lot of people don’t come to the forums so expect an exciting time on launch day, but by early to mid next week expect everyone to be hero point grinding leaving dynamic events that don’t award hero points abandoned and large chucks of these rather difficult level 80 jungle maps abandoned. Those who go into the game grinding hero points are just playing it as ArenaNet intended. They knew people would do this. They knew it would divide the PvE community and turn the game into a grind fest. They also know that’s what gets the most players pulling out the credit cards for the gem store.
I hope their strategy backfires. I believe it will and many who bought and have played GW2 because of it’s casual friendly, anti-grind design will either quit PvE or quit the game altogether. That’s probably ok with ArenaNet as the flood of F2P customers that came on board in recent months will convert to HoT purchasers (if they haven’t already) and they will inherit the game and it’s new model. The new players coming in are far removed from that original 2011 manifesto and will be oblivious to the changes that have taken us so far from it.
The non HoT purchasing F2P customers will continue to use the gem store. So boat loads of revenue will be flowing in from gem store purchases for F2P accounts and HoT grinders looking for boost items. This is what the changes are all about. Future content will be just as grindy as the PvE side of GW2 makes it’s full transition to becoming another trashy F2P MMO. Hope I’m wrong, but the patterns are pretty clear. This is how they maximize profits by tossing most of their philosophy for changing MMOs out the window and simply doing what every other publisher has been doing. Kind of sickening really. I doubt even a good number of the developers and design team understand what’s really going on with these decisions. It’s all about the $$$

Gotta have everything immediately, am I right guys?
^This.
why is it people feel these day’s that playing a game involves nothing other than playing what they want to play. They don’t want to level, they don’t want to progress, they want everything from the word go. They want everything handed to them, then some of them will say the game is too easy, or boring and that there is nothing to do.
If I havent got it already, its already too late and all is vain.
It’s too late, I’ve already made all the profit there is to be made from HoT. Pack it in guys, no point even playing.

there are no assumptions.. only facts.. and these facts will ruin my gaming experience.. since I have to spoil myself of contant I wanted to enjoy slowly
Well you first assumed you would be able to use a full Espec directly after launch. As far as I understand this is where you are disappointed…
I assumed that I would be able to unlock all skills and trait if I farm all HP in oldtyria for a whole day with my revenant, yes… but now I am forced to go into the jungle and rush to the first HP even if I dont want to
I’m willing to wager with the points you have, you’ll be able to unlock a major portion of the spec. I still think you’re complaining prematurely.

For they will hop on the train of players who jump in and do nothing but grind hero challenges for the first few weeks (or months for the more casuals) before unlocking their Elite Spec then go back and do the instanced story.
pretty much all this..
you maybe just said it better then I could..

You can go through the experience and enjoy it and just get the points as you go. No one is forcing you rush through this. If You are feeling the desperate need to get it all right away, that’s on you, not arena net

Verticality aside, it’s four maps. FOUR. Colin has said you can gain enough Hero Points in just the new maps alone with no requirement to grind HP in the “old” maps. He’s already said you will be able to unlock the ability to use the new Elite Spec (and the new weapon) with only 60 HP.
I don’t think there is any need for the “instant gratification” that some of you are demanding when it seems that it’s so easy to get the required HP. Besides, we don’t even know if you’ll need a FULL unlock of the spec to use all the new abilities. The higher tier unlocks may just be cosmetic, for example.
Get your undies unwadded, relax your massive sense of entitlement, and take a few breaths. Reserve judgement until the update is actually out and you can make an actual EDUCATED comment about how things really are.
For Pete’s sake, I have all 8 existing characters classes on my account (some more than once) and will have the additional Revenant too. That’s a lot of Hero Points and pretty much 80% or more of my time is spent in WvW on a mid-tier server. I know that there is the POSSIBILITY of a massive grind, but I’ll stay cautiously optimistic and see how it plays out.

I’m really excited to train in the jungle to become a chronomancer. I won’t be rushing through the content since I don’t think its possible. You need mastery points to reach some locations, meaning you have to do events and play the game until you can access enough hero challenges. I enjoy the mesmer, which is why I chose to enter the jungle as one. I plan on turning back time and reversing some of the damage that the pact suffered. Play to have fun, and control your life.
“Aww man, someone put a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in front of me, now I have to eat it, even though I’m allergic.” Sounds a bit like the OP.
Just play the game and have fun with the revenant. If you are only playing the rev for the herald, you are playing the wrong class.

You haven’t had a HoT experience yet so how can it be ruined.
You are QQ’ing based on a smattering of facts and a whole truckload of assumptions and guesswork.there are no assumptions.. only facts.. and these facts will ruin my gaming experience.. since I have to spoil myself of contant I wanted to enjoy slowly
Then enjoy it slowly. I can do it. That means you can do it. You won’t be the most effective herald in gaming history but you will nevertheless be a herald if you have at least 60 HP to spare.
Don’t worry so much, just enjoy the game.
herald is goingto be in a particularly nasty spot for two reasons however:
we don’t have a chance to get the bonus points everyone else does
our big mechanical change is Legendary Dragon Stance. guess what happens if you equip it? you lose all your utilities, since utilities on Rev are tied to stance, we need to buy a heal, three utilities and the elite just to have access to a utility bar AT ALL.
for 60 points all other classes gain a weapon and mechanic, and in return lose a traitline. Heralds gain a weapon and lose a traitline, and if they try to use their mechanic they lose their utilities until they get more points.
it’s like if reapers had to spend hero points to unlock each individual reaper shroud skill.

I don’t want to tell you how you should do, but take this as an advice : “why don’t you try to first understand and master the flow of this new class while enjoying the content and popping to hero point that happen to appear around you so that you don’t feel forced to unlock the spec?”
I know it is not what you wanted but especially in the case of Rev/Herald, you have a lot of new toys to play with before you feel you know the class by heart.
