There are definately horses in the Guild Wars universe, we have just never seen one alive.

In-game horses you can see:

- The four servants of Dhuum:

- This enemy, found through 3 missions in the Guild Wars 1 Prophecies campaign

- He also has a miniature version.

- The Celestial horses you can find in the Factions campaign.

NPC’s talking about actual horses:

- You can find this guy in the Canthan campaign wandering around the Wajjun Bazaar with the quote.

“Hey, hey you! I was riding my horse to the other side of town and I ran out of hey to feed him to get there. Spare a few gold so I can feed him and be on my way?”

- This girl being trampled to death by a horse.

This place in the Far Shiverpeaks in Prophecies campaign named after horses.

Toys n props:
You can find these in the SKrittburgh in Brisban Wildlands.

So horses definately exist(ed), maybe all eaten by Charr on the Meatoverfest.

Props to these guys, they all found references to horses.

Horses are mythical creatures that might have lived in Tyria.

However aside from tales and art, none are to be found in these lands to this day.

There were horselike creatures in the past, but they were used by undead creatures, who might got them from another realm.

Take that with a grain of salt

On top of GscGunner’s post, the first emperor of Cantha, Kaineng Tah, died from being flung off of his hunting horse.

Horses do very much exist in Tyria – and I mean the world, not the continent.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

All these posts about horses, and no mentions of perhaps the most famous one yet? The horse of Mad King Thorn himself, Gum Drops, the Noble Steed. Tyria’s only invisible pony.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Gum_Drops,_the_Noble_Steed

Gum Drops has appeared in each Hallowe’en event so far in Guild Wars 2 in Lion’s Arch along with.. well, ‘appeared’ might be a strong word. I mean, I didn’t see him, what with him being invisible and all, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t there!

People either ate them all or exterminated all horses because they were too similar to the centaurs. Or maybe Centaurs are the result of some abominable breeding experiments of horse and humans which led to the extinction of the normal horses?

But that would mean…..ASURA!!!

So Asura are the creators of the Centaurs, bred to destroy humans as the early Asura (as in those just come up to the surface) saw humans as a threat….

Actually, there were centaurs before the Asura came to the surface. Maybe the Asura created the centaurs to serve as their vanguard? You know, let the centaurs wipe out the humans before going up there themselves. Except this obviously failed.

I think the reason we don’t see normal living horses in the game is to prevent adding fuel to the fire of the mount discussion. Many players would argue that since there are horses in the game, that it would break the immersion if they couldn’t ride them, or some other silly reason for horse mounts. ANet seems pretty adamant about staying away from mounts in GW2, and keeping horses out of the picture just seems to make sense regarding this reasoning.

These are my opinions on the matter based purely on speculation.

I think mounts are completely useless in a game where you can fast travel close to anywhere at any given time, but if I could ride a dolyak, I’d be happy.

If mounts gave a permanent out-of-combat 25% speed boost (like some signets do) and are otherwise cosmetic then I’d perfectly fine with them.

Oh, and one should automatically dismount when talking to a npc or interacting with (some) objects, to avoid screen clutter around merchants and crafting stations.

Horses in Tyria died out centuries ago, even the ones in Cantha that the Emperor owned at one time…that’s why you don’t see them anymore(except for the undead ones in GW1).

It was one of the scenes glimpsed through the asura gate- a “grassy plain” is all the description we get, though the presence of a gate may one day narrow things down, if we ever learn the boundaries of pre-Primordus asuran civilization.

Everyone gets an out of combat speed boost, that’s why you walk so much slower while in combat :P

As for mounts, go ahead. There’s already the broom and magic carpet. As long as they don’t give a speed boost I’m fine with it.

Yes. Horses exist on Tyria. No, you can’t find them any more than you can find someone actually using an outhouse/latrine. Or pregnant people.

I’m with Tobias on this one. I’m sure we can imagine thousands of lore-related reasons why we don’t see them, but at the end of the day, I think it’s just a matter of “we don’t need them, so we won’t bother to make them in the game”.
