While the new LA is very pretty, some it doesn’t seem… Super well thought out, from a lore standpoint.

1. Why did they literally pave over the priceless ruins of the old royal palace with some random street? It was still intact. Wouldn’t the priory care? What happened to their excavation?

2. What happened to Kerryn Deverol? In the previous patch she was sitting around on her island saying a chapel was going to be airlifted in there (which was sort of confusing in of itself) but now it’s a garden instead and, despite it being named after her, she’s nowhere to be found.

3. What happened to Evon Gnashblades partner? I forget her name – The Sylvari. She’s not in the new building. Did she die? She was in Edge of Destiny, so that seems kinda notable.

4. Where did the Zaishen go? The little half-fort they hung out in is gone, as well. Have they been retconned?

5. Why are multiple Krytan royal banners flying over the entrance to the Eastern Ward? Isn’t LA pretty big on not acknowledging royal authority?

6. A dam has been built over the river near the lighthouse, but water is still somehow flowing through it as normal. What? I guess that’s not quite a lore concern, but still.

7. Where is the Lionguards headquarters, now? It’s not in Fort Marriner anymore.

8. Why did they destroy the, like… Actual “Lions Arch”? The big archway with the Lion statues? Now the name doesn’t really make any sense.

Those are good questions. Jaken has good questions in his/her LA thread as well.

I am often amazed at the lore of GW2, and occasionally remark upon its remarkable (ahem) flexibility. So I was expecting LA to be very cool while simultaneously blithely disregarding various and sundry elements of its foundation. Including the terrain.

And it really does look great — especially on my new PC! Which has a screen more than twice as wide as my old screen, but never mind that. New LA is gorgeous. I say so with sincere sincerity. /e salute its creators

It may be a little too gorgeous, all things considered, but whatever. I made up a little song about it. Feel free to sing along!

Lore is a chore and lore is a bore.
Who needs lore when there’s rocks in the store?
Cool overrules all the lore from before.
Ain’t got time for no silly old lore.
Lore, lore, lore nevermore!

1. Why did they literally pave over the priceless ruins of the old royal palace with some random street? It was still intact. Wouldn’t the priory care? What happened to their excavation?

While it’s hard to say why, the Priory doesn’t seem concerned. They are interested in Scarlet and the breach, now. I think they believe that the breach would have uncovered buried artifacts of Orr or something.

2. What happened to Kerryn Deverol? In the previous patch she was sitting around on her island saying a chapel was going to be airlifted in there (which was sort of confusing in of itself) but now it’s a garden instead and, despite it being named after her, she’s nowhere to be found.

Considering her relationship with the Consortium and their current activeness, I’d imagine she is somewhere with them awaiting the Chapel. I think the Chapel is still coming and will likely be in place after the nearby Guild Initiative building is complete. The representatives are clearly still working on it, which implies that LA still isn’t finished.

3. What happened to Evon Gnashblades partner? I forget her name – The Sylvari. She’s not in the new building. Did she die? She was in Edge of Destiny, so that seems kinda notable.

You mean Sareb? She disappeared a while ago without any mention. Since Evon Gnashblade is so shrouded in mystery, her whereabouts (or fate) are still up in the air.

4. Where did the Zaishen go? The little half-fort they hung out in is gone, as well. Have they been retconned?

Perhaps they left of their own accord. We know they don’t agree with the Consortium, so maybe they’ll return if the Consortium turns on us or something.

5. Why are multiple Krytan royal banners flying over the entrance to the Eastern Ward? Isn’t LA pretty big on not acknowledging royal authority?

I only see 2 banners heading from the portals to Postern Ward. It’s hard to say why they are there, though. Either ANet put the wrong emblem on the flags, or we’re to assume Krytans either live in those towers and hung the banners themselves or Kryta has taken claim of part of the neighborhood. If you go to Silverwastes as a non-human and speak to the human leader of the pact, you comment on how humans feel the need to always claim things. Perhaps this is a nod to that.

6. A dam has been built over the river near the lighthouse, but water is still somehow flowing through it as normal. What? I guess that’s not quite a lore concern, but still.

It’s curved, rusted, and briny. If it is a dam, I don’t think it’s meant to stop the flow of water.

7. Where is the Lionguards headquarters, now? It’s not in Fort Marriner anymore.

Not sure. Magnus makes a comment about them being shorthanded (though I’d swear there’s more Lionguard in the city now than there ever was), so maybe something’s going on there.

8. Why did they destroy the, like… Actual “Lions Arch”? The big archway with the Lion statues? Now the name doesn’t really make any sense.

Yeah, it’s weird that the Captain’s Council allowed that to happen.

No offense – Really, I commend you for trying to adapt – But a lot of those seem like pretty big optimistic streches, considering Anets track record on this sort of stuff.

When was it established that the Zaishen were enemies of the Consortium? I can’t remember a time they were involved with the plot at all.

Also, the fact that they literally changed the name to “Deverol Garden” on the map and added a merchant there that sells flowers as well as some NPCs with dialogue kind of suggests the chapel isn’t coming. I’m getting the increasing sense that Anet redesigned half of the map at the last minute for some reason and disregarded a lot of the old lore around it.

Especially since it doesn’t match the old new-LA concept art at all.

While the new LA is very pretty, some it doesn’t seem… Super well thought out, from a lore standpoint.

1. Why did they literally pave over the priceless ruins of the old royal palace with some random street? It was still intact. Wouldn’t the priory care? What happened to their excavation?

They mention for the commandore’s manor, (I’d have to check the palace one) that the priory was allowed to and DID remove all relics before reconstruction of at LEAST the manor site. Maybe elsewhere.

As for being Intact… not entirely. Especially after the breachmaker exploded.

2. What happened to Kerryn Deverol? In the previous patch she was sitting around on her island saying a chapel was going to be airlifted in there (which was sort of confusing in of itself) but now it’s a garden instead and, despite it being named after her, she’s nowhere to be found.

Or she is inside a building, or off in a trip. Like Dougal Keane is apparently not in LA. Doesn’t mean he’s dead.

3. What happened to Evon Gnashblades partner? I forget her name – The Sylvari. She’s not in the new building. Did she die? She was in Edge of Destiny, so that seems kinda notable.

It’s unknown.

4. Where did the Zaishen go? The little half-fort they hung out in is gone, as well. Have they been retconned?

It’s not a retcon if from original LA to new LA, the Zaishen simply moved on perhaps.

5. Why are multiple Krytan royal banners flying over the entrance to the Eastern Ward? Isn’t LA pretty big on not acknowledging royal authority?

They don’t flaunt it, but they are independent yes.

7. Where is the Lionguards headquarters, now? It’s not in Fort Marriner anymore.

And how do you know this? There is the huge airbase behind the fort.

8. Why did they destroy the, like… Actual “Lions Arch”? The big archway with the Lion statues? Now the name doesn’t really make any sense.

I recall those weren’t around in GW1. But it was still Lion’s Arch. :P

I’m more concerned about why the Orders of Whispers meeting place is so open. Their old sewer base behind the Captains’ ship was one of the greatest small touches of Old Lion’s Arch.

The OoW has always had some open bases. If the person is in full OoW gear in public, they likely aren’t trying to be stealthy. Besides, I’ve read dialogue (haven’t seen it ingame or read it ingame) that imply the OoW was doing a fairly hefty recall of people since the events of Living Story. Probably explains all the OoW npcs walking around through the city.

  1. The Consortium did the construction, and the Trader’s Forum and Grand Piazza look like tourist attractions. While I don’t like it, it fits the theme of the constructors. As to the Priory’s care – perhaps they just didn’t have a say? Perhaps they got the ruins? Their excavation got moved when LA was beginning to be resettled; their newer camp was established to research the Breachmaker and the ley lines – it was (still is I think) on the southwest end of Sanctum Harbor.
  2. It’s an open-air chapel (and then some), but dunno where she moved to. I was expecting a more temple-like chapel myself, thinking it was going to become what it is described as in the Sea of Sorrows book (a chapel to the Six Gods with attributions from all then-four races). I was kind of expecting all the recent god costumes were because Anet were going to have holographic models of the avatars done similar to Scarlet’s holos which is the Scarlet model with a fancy effect (like all ghosts are).
  3. She disappeared as of Escape from Lion’s Arch. With no mention of her since, I’ve presumed her dead.
  4. Less retcon and more forgotten. They had that presence there, but no more. Where they are is anyone’s guess. I hope they’ve not been put on the bus forever, though.
  5. Missed these banners, but they were probably meant to be for the history of the city – the area known as Commodore’s Quarter could have been named Doric’s Quarter – after the first human king who had his palace in Lion’s Arch.
  6. You kind of answered this yourself. Likely a design oversight. If you bug it, they may fix.
  7. It would likely be the Aerodome, which is on the cliffs just south of Fort Marriner.
  8. Because there’s been less care about maintaining credible consistency in lore. Because it’s the consortium and their only interest is profit. Because many possibilities.

Alright. I don’t mean any disrespect to you guys, just so you know! Sure, but presumptions only get one so far.
This new LA in terms of scope, people and lore is quite a big jump to its previous iteration.

There are some big holes to fill here that might need a bit more official explanation, instead of us lore hounds just piecing things half-true together.

btw. can we combine this thread, with my thread, since the topics are similiar?

btw. 2. There is a rumor floating around, that the old lions statue won`t be making a comeback and the new one is small and a bit out of sight (if you don`t angle your camera) on the heart of the mist portal.
Personaly I think that isn`t a good choice. Even though it was destroyed so often it still had a lot of symbolic value. It was a testament of the races working together to create one piece of art.
Kinda sad to see it just pushed away for some corperate sponsort amusement park. (The city is missing a bit of personal flavour the old city had. In my opinion preserving more old structures would have archieved that.)

On the ruins of the old palace…

It’s possible that they still exist despite having a new street going over the top, like the Seattle Underground. As long as the Priory has some hidden means of getting in, they may actually prefer this than having the ruins remain in the open air where they can be subject to, say, Aetherblade bombardment.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

I know you’re joking, but the Consortium don’t own the entire city. They couldn’t just ask Deverol to leave. The old dialogue made a point of saying the island was in her family for generations.

Did you find the explanation for the royal banners while Lion’s Arch was not under Krytan domination?

I like Konig’s interpretation, that they are meant to honor the history of King Doric’s presence in the city.

With absolutely no disrespect intended, this explanation isn’t very consistant. Sea of Sorrows is very firm on the inhabitants of Lions Arch having strong opinions about divesting themselves of the cities royal heritage.

I know you’re trying your best, but this sort of business is making me kind of cynical about Anets interest in maintaining a cohesive world and character pool, rather then just doing… Well, whatever seems cool, and cleaning up later. I know it might not be within your power or something you’re even interested in, but I’d really appreciate it if you guys would go back and put a few explanations for the radical changes in game rather than having us just stab in the dark and hope.

Bringing back some of the old NPC dialogue that important characters would have would help, too. Right now, someone playing for the first time and trying to pick up the lore has no way of knowing who any of the important characters in the city are unless they use the wiki, because almost none of them talk any longer.

Well they did away with the lions fountain and it`s now a reused asset. We`ll see it back as the WTS Tournament trophy, so yeah, whoopdidoo…

I mean, it`s not like it had cultural value. Was a centerpiece of the old city. A combination of several multiracial artisants to provide a symbol for the free multiracial city.
A symbol of a city that won`t fall, as the Fountain always came back.

It was the first things player who traveled there via Asura gate saw.

It also promoted the game on several occasion as well.

It`s not like players waited for it to be rebuild as a sign that LA is back (Which is a nice antology as for me this isn`t LA anymore at the moment.)

I haven`t seen any dialog or signs that the peple of LA didn`t want it anymore. Be it a sign of misfortune or something (I think I only heard player theories).

So yeah, I think we are riding a lot of style over substance here, which is concerning. It`s hard to think of any old structure that is still there and hasn`t been completly reworked or paved over, so aside from from some references old LA is dead and everyone just went and embraced the new consortium designed city.

I can already imagine how the preperation talks went:
Consortium: “We know you have plans on rebuilding, keeping close to your pirate and nautical ways, but look, now you can live inside a Lobster or a Krakens head.”

btw. Greetings to Foreman Joshua at the lobsterhead. Which supports my theory
(related video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LebN68jFifM )

However enough of that:

Whoa, now that you mentioned it.
They not only closed it off, they just palced a new mountain there, as if it never existed.
To top it off they put a full grown tree there.

The main question is why, though. I mean they are completly fine with a tunnel to the outer parts of the city from Lonars Pass.

Thank you Mr Fries.

It is still a shame not to have access to sewers, and not to see a pirate district to create the East. Unpeu as a refusal to act was the implementation of consorcium …

Rha, not asser open buildings. Too bad, it’s nice, it would have been nice to have the rp market counters, and small house. See even a newspaper. And still no hospital !!!
Oh! Also lacks what to bring water to the fields = O

LA has lots of opportunity to grow again =)

I have a question for the Roleplay Lion’s Arch, level Weather:

At what part of the world could comparré the weather? and ocean currents of tyrie are oriented how?

I’ll tell you how they moved mountains: waypoint technology, adapted for the task at hand! Creative and ingenious waypoint technicians set up a network of specialized mass moving waypoint units around, under, and inside the mountain, and when everything was ready, POOF! I imagine it’s not too dissimilar to the procedure used by demolition experts when they rig a building to collapse, only the waypoint guys aren’t demolishing, but moving stuff.

Full grown tree? Pfft. With enough mass moving waypoint units, they could plant the Pale Tree her own dang self smack dab in the middle of LA!

The table is a fable.

Now I want that to happen. Not LA, but some mad science Asura (so, anyone I guess) taking his rage out on the Sylvari by dislocating their home to somwhere…

I was just sitting here thinking, this could be the way to defeat the dragons. Lure them into mass mover waypoint traps, and send them… I dunno, out into spaaaace!

Or just destabilize the annular containment beam and let their atoms fly and be free.

Or, store them in some sort of waypoint matrix pattern holding device (see the ‘Relics’ episode of ST:TNG in which Scotty stores himself in a transporter pattern buffer until he’s rematerialized and rescued 75 years later).

Waypoint Technology — Pointing the Way to the Future!

The table is a fable.

That happened with the Escape from Lion’s Arch patch.

I guess it was because it seemed silly to have two passages between LA and Gendarran so they removed the less used one?

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

In lore, the second passage was destroyed by Captain Smash while escaping LA. To stop Miasma or hostile forces from spreading and following the Refugees.

As for the Tunnel, it replaces the Asura Gate. My issue with that is how there is no defenses there at all…

Different parts of Tyria have different climates and the ocean currents presumably vary as well. We haven’t mapped out the ocean current system, so feel free to conceptualize your own take on them and roleplay using those.
