So today the new trailer came online and I am making this thread to say: wut???

I know I am WAAAY to early in expressing my opinion, but at this moment I am afraid.

I am afraid of what this story arc will become. I think I can call myself a lore fanatic, I do my fair share of theorycrafting etc. and I have never ever ever ever seen a theory that saw this coming. I dont know if I talked it through with another frequenter of this forum or with other friends in game, but here is what I said:

“I asked the last question in the living story recap livestream which went like: “Will the Scarlet arc tie into the existing Lore? Will we have a wow I see moment?” Now this seemed like a question with an obvious answer, but I asked it anyway because I wanted to make sure the theorycrafting wasnt for nothing and that we werent going to fight a random robot Scarlet made with her skills and with the help of random alliances"

This is almost exactly like I said it. After the livesteam I was happy because I thought the effort we all put into this was for something good, well at least there still was an opportunity that one of us was right. And I repeat, I am making assumptions out of the blue and I am not blaming anyone for anything yet, but I am expressing the thought process that goes through me and maybe even a few others. BTW in the livestream the devs said it was definately going to tie into the existing lore. Maybe I havent been clear with my question that by existing lore I meant everything before the Living world started and not the lore that the flame legion and the dredge had an alliance for example because this is seen back in the trailer. I kept three options open: It was either about the Dream, Primordus or Steam Creatures.

And then came the trailer. And I must say I didn’t expect this. In this context, these words arent positive. As a Lore fanatic, I should have been able to expect this. I have explored the game and I have probably seen nearly every dialogue added since Flame and Frost, but this was completely unexpected and I see nothing that ties into the existing lore in this trailer. There are a lot of unexpected things here. We have this huge watchwork marionette (dont know if thats the english word) walkin through a mountain area. And then we have these giant wurms in Bloodtide Coast. And is this voice of significance for the story or is it just to sound more epic.

TLDR: The thought I want to express here is that I am confused with this trailer and that, although it looks like it will be an epic battle, the other lore fanatics might feel the same.

I want to know what other lore enthusiasts think of the trailer and I want to discuss it.

Edit: the wurm is in the Bloodtide Coast and not in Southsun Cove.

Look beyond the obvious…

What i got from this trailer in few words:
- Scarlet got an UFO
- Someone likes Scarlets plans
- Scarlet likes her puppets, soe she made bigger ones
- We will all die.

So yeah, not much lore here in my opinion. Just the annuncement of more “invasion” content which i honestly do not care about, but the farming comunity might enjoy.

I really hope there is much more along the lines and this is only the beginning.

Well this article puts everything a bit more into perspective:
http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/14/exclusive-preview-of-guild-wars-2s-origin-of-madness-release/

Still, while like the design, i never understood the purpose of the watchknights in the game. Their only purpose was to be tunred and that is a big waste in my opinion.
We never had time to really get to know them.

So yeah. The trailer did not really hype me to be honest and the more detailed massivly artcicle did not help either.

I mean, there is a giant multi headed worm under the whole bloodside coast? Really?
With a massive body and for that she had to put bumpers throughout the entire world?
I really hope there is more.

However i like the sugestion that we have to “find out” things on our own with the next release, alongside our new.. well… friends? The Scooby Gang aka May, Kas, Rox, Bra and our beloved white little critter.

I really hope it is something like a scavenger hunt and not just some story instances.
I also really hope Scarlet has a better reason beside: Everything is beneath her.

I also read alot of the lore speculation. The latest version is that the thumpers are trying to wake up Primordus. (Psync’s theory: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLD5F1mAhIA)
I also read on the forums where one guy said that the thumpers are trying to wake up the destroyers/Primordus.

Now if you go watch the trailer again and read the article on massively you can see that:
1. the wurm has awaken because of the thumpers(it’s not the dragon but it’s something xD) Quote:" you will find out what happens when a bunch of heavy objects pound the ground over and over again: Sedat made the apt comparison to earthworms being disturbed by stomping on wet ground….."

2.Go watch the trailer again and pause it at 0:24. You can see that the giant watcknight ISN’T actually walking. It’s stepping on something that I think is a GIANT thumper(you can see in the video that when it’s steps on it it ressonates). There are 5 of them there (picture from that on the massively http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/adam/950ea0e331888b18e0d6a614dfc38d3d/Marionette%20Fight%201.jpg ) Maybe that will wake up something….???

Just what i saw.

Now i’ll let the others go speculate more about this. ^^

If she has this big UFO and Watchknight megazord sized puppet, why not drop it closer to Divinity’s Reach?

We did find out that she’s not too keen on humans after all.
The updated wurms I really don’t have a problem with.

If she has all these toys and tech then why go stomping around in the cold?

Yeah it could be but its just weird that the first series wake something up in the Bloodtide Coasts. I cant see anything of that tie into what we know already. Come to think of it. I once posted a theory where I connected the dots someone drew on the world map of Tyria and they all came together in Lornar’s Pass.

Maybe the new wurm is just a by-product of sorts. Scarlet wants to wake something up, thus the towers are all over the place. But with out knowing she wakes the wurm.

Or!

She does know the wurm is there, so she wakes him to distract the Orders and us?

Reply to Blurk.

What if that really is the center of all the magic lines? And what would happen if you try to disturb the flow right on the crossing? You would disrupt all lines (with the new watch knight beeing placed in lornar’s pass? maybe this approves my theory that it actually is disrupting something)

To be honest, this is probably the first content trailer that I am really disappointed with because…. just WTF is going on….. I give up on this story arc, the wurm is plausible and maybe that should’ve been the main focus but the giant marionette? Ugh, just ugh….

Blurk, you articulate the same feeling that I am having. I was expecting the video to showcase content that would, in some way, release the pressure that has been accumulating with all of the questions that have built up over the year. And instead I’m left with more questions and more disparate content that has to fit into existing or new theories. Every mini-arc so far has had people asking “What’s the point of these alliances?” This patch was supposed to mark the end of those questions, but again we have to ask with respect to the giant robot.

Instead of the final four patches wrapping things up, it now feels like a new patch that adds new story twists, and then the last three will be the ones to wrap up (and perhaps this pattern continues again). I’m sad to say that this video severely dampened my hype for this patch. I’m sure that some things will be cleared up, but I’m ready to see that thread that they keep talking about that ties everything together.

Ultimately, I trust Anet to deliver in the end, but this marks another ‘opportunity for learning’ that I was hoping we wouldn’t experience in the delivery of these final patches.

And I simply have to say that I hate the idea of a giant Watchknight. I never liked their model, and IMO it makes the game look bad when the upcoming giant boss is a giant fembot with robot high heels.

Side note about the wurm: The wurm is not necessarily the point of the thumpers. The devs in the Massively article made it seem (IMO) more like the wurm is an incidental side-effect of the thumpers rather than purpose of their creation.

I guess we will have to wait to find out if she was awakening the hydra wurm on purpose, or if it was a nice side effect from the thumpers, since it draws the hero’s attention away from her. It said in the article that you only need to kill the Great Jungle Wurm to continue the story. It would be fascinating if all the wurms were connected to one another in some way.

Though, I was happy to hear that she is rallying her forces in Lornar’s Pass. We might finally get some more information on her ties with the steam creatures. That’s really the only place that has a constant force of them there, and the only place where the steam creatures are actually trying to somewhat invade and hold ground. Hopefully, they will delve deeper into that subject as the final arc continues.

I’m not all that surprised with Scarlet’s “UFO”. This is the land of airships after all, and we already knew that Scarlet’s Aetherblades already had some. It doesn’t take much imagination to think Scarlet might have a special one for herself.

Keep in mind there are still 3 releases left after this one. This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning of the end.

The trailer was, at its core purpose, not designed to appeal to us lore fanatics. It was for the gameplay people. Big marching robot, big wurm to kill. All to get you pumped up about seeing/fighting them.

On the other hand, this update is called ‘The Origins of Madness’, which seems to imply, at least to me, that we will find out why Scarlet’s gone crazy in addition to what we already know in What Scarlet Saw.

And yes, the Wurm is not really part of Scarlet’s plans as I see it. It surfaced because of the thumpers (like how you make the ground vibrate to surface worms in the real world), but that’s not WHY the thumpers are there.

I’m not sure of that one. Lorewise, my hopes throughout the LS were that Scarlet’s story arc will end with introduction of jungle/earth dragon Mordemorth (who’d probably arrive in an expansion or at least a 2nd season of LS).
A giant worm that (at least as far as game mechanics goes) resembles other dragon lieutenants comes quite close to what I’d expect.
My2cents ofc.

I would like to note something:

The three-headed ancient wurm is called a Great Jungle Wurm in the article. The only other great jungle wurm we know of is in Wychmire Swamp.

I wonder if there might be a connection? The wurm in Wychmire Swamp is said to be a source of greater evil, yet it looks like any other jungle wurm but larger. Fun fact to note is that there weren’t any jungle wurms in GW1.

I think that Scarlet accidentally awoke a champion of Mordremoth, personally, given to hints to the Wychmire Swamp wurm. And it’s possible that all these wurms are tied to Mordremoth and we just didn’t know it (which would in turn create a larger tie between Mordremoth and the Nightmare Court).

Dear ANet writers,

Another interesting fact (with speculation): The nature of the leylines is unknown — we don’t know if their paths are static or if they change according to the magical ‘climate’ based on world events and monuments. That said, if you draw a path from the location of this wurm in Bloodtide Coast to Wychmire Swamp and continue the path, it leads directly to Bloodstone Fen in Maguuma. To make it even more interesting, the path (in the other direction) leads directly to the landing place of Kralkatorik.

It feels like a silly coincidence, but I wanted to point it out.

The article also talks about that that worm is much bigger underground and we are basicly battling against a Hydra here. It does not matter how many heads we slay, there will always be one comming back.

What if this is really a big worm, one that runs through whole areas… though i doubt that it would be big enough to be going from Maguma to Bloodtide.

I read a lot of the lore theory crafting but don’t normally post, however in this instance I think I will. The thumpers made me think of one thing, and it wasn’t GW2, however the coincidences are now mounting up.

Thumpers are used to summon worms.

Melange, a substance which along with allowing you to navigate by folding space (maybe used in Assura gate and Waypoint creation), also allows you to see the future. This video has allowed us to see the future and it involves great worms.

Quote ‘Thou shalt not create a machine in the image of a human mind’ brings to mind the watchknight.

So are we going to see level 500 cooking and a recipe for Melange, because as the quote goes, ‘The Spice must Flow’

1. Who is the voice?
2. Was the wurm the objective, or a side-effect? (Presuming Scarlet’s omniscience, an unavoidable one?)
3. What is the purpose of the giant Marionette?

1. The mysterious E?
2. A champion of Mordremoth, awakened?
3. The only purpose I see for having something like a marionette is for vertical ventures, i.e. to go down below or high above. Seeing, however, the recent activity surrounding the thumpers,

Thump, Thump. Time to jump

There’s a secret deep below to find

a fire is rising

I would guess that indeed, a dragon from below is coming.

If it is then i doubt we will see it in these next patches, maybe the forth but still highly doubt it. For them to come up with the final design of a dragon then to modeling it, it would take a while to do and get right even if it is just revealing the dragon.

Also i know people have talked about time travel and what not for this arc, well wouldn’t it be cool if thump thump time to jump referenced the probes and that scarlet is going to jump through time. obviously not going to happen but cool spin on that line.

Although we are getting a new asuran friend to join our crew so that might be the voice even though the voice is way too deep and what not. For now i am just pinning it as a deep voice to get us excited.

Well I watched it again and noted that the voice said, “…destroy all of you.” Which, the way it’s worded means that whoever the voice belongs to, they are on the side of Scarlet, because if it was an ally, the voice would’ve said, “…destroy all of us.” I am thinking that this voice is the voice of the person really behind everything, and that scarlet, like her giant marionette is just a puppet in a grander scheme of things.

I figure that this deep male voice is no different than that female voice from Tequatl Rising and Twilight Assault videos.

Just a deep menacing voice to make things sound more “epic” and “terrifying.” They probably couldn’t get the female voice actor (probably busy with another gig) so went with someone else.

Though if it is someone tied to the story then yes, it’d be an ally of Scarlet. Whether or not she knows it.

As far as the wurm goes, I would like to chime in on just a couple things: first, Konig was slightly off when he said the Great Jungle Wurm when he said it looks like any other jungle wurm. It recently underwent a stealth update that changed its coloration, and this Great Wurm Mark II? Same coloration. Furthermore, the trailer shows husks around the wurm, and combined with the Massively article, they clearly aren’t from Scarlet’s pet Nightmare Court. Small things, maybe, but I think they go a long way towards furthering the Mordremoth connection. Though that does raise questions about what it’s doing beneath Bloodtide Coast… and where else more might be as well.

I had this crazy-kitten theory (really) a long time ago that when the mursaat eradicated Ronan’s village, they attracted Nightmare (an outer dimensional entity) to the area through their active use of phase-out magic (entering Nightmare’s dimension and back… it could be the Dream of Dreams itself).

Also wouldn’t object if it was Lazarus the Dire… after all, he’s holding a grudge against both humans and asura. What does it matter if a few other races go extinct along with his brethrens’ undoers?

From what the trailer shows, I think it looks like a crane coming through a portal or being held up by those devices protruding force fields. With that being said, the Iron Forgeman is a large djinn powered metal suit, more akin to a golem, rather than a mechanical clockwork AI capable of reforming, repairing and, combining with other allies, created in the basement by people we know nothing about(do correct me if I’m wrong, I could find nothing on the origin of watchwork/twisted and Ive never been huge on lore).

ANYWAYS, back to the topic on this patch. I dunno, I’m skeptical of it. Anet hasn’t exactly impressed me with lore&story this time around, but maybe my taste have just changed.
Looks like a new boss everyone will zerg too the moment yellow letters flash on the screen, it’ll be just like pre-nerf Scarlet invasions. Except green, large fangs, and lotsa plant vomit. Yum!
Running from a giant fembot’s stilletos! If its an instance it’ll probably be very similar to the clockheart, strafing off the danger zones, but with your friends glancing up and giggling," Ha, giant boobs".
Trying to maintain my positive side, I really do hope that what they do cough up this patch does have some…believable relevance to the past or at the very least be fun to play.

At least the second was explained eventually. Stefan got drunk with Kilroy, Alesia went pouting about, and… forgot about the others.

The Watchknights were clockwork mechanics shaped like humans and empowered by mesmer magic. They were never intended to reform, repair, or combine with others. The original shape-changing – turning into a quaggan, charr, bandit, ogre, etc. – was illusion magic.

The Twisted Clockwork minions are made from the pieces of Watchknights, reformed into different shapes. Scarlet altered the Watchknights adding in the ability of the Twisted Clockwork being able to repair other, fallen, Twisted Clockworks and combining with them.

So all the amazing abilities that the Twisted Clockwork have as machines comes from Scarlet and her knowledge of asuran golemancy.

Thanks for taking your time to explain all that Konig, I just felt they were too advanced..noo.. just out of place considering the era of technology the world is in if they were indeed super advanced in the pure technology aspect rather than the more believable golem magitech(still boggles my mind humans made them).

And just saying this again, ufo looks like a crane coming through a portal. Anyone else notice the big red arrow swooshing around as mega stilettos stomps?

It’s best to think of the Watchknights as human-shaped clocks. Because in terms of mechanisms, that’s what they are. Just a bunch of interlocking springs and gears and levers, little no different than charr technology. Except that charr tech is steam powered (or so it seems), while the Watchknights are powered by mesmer magic. And charr tech is probably more advanced considering the tanks.

How Scarlet powers her Twisted Clockwork alterations is unknown though.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Energy from the portals, I’d say.

how do you think AI works in them, btw? Is it similar to golems (even though I have no idea how it works with golems too…I suppose some crystal asura magitech of some sort), or controled from one center? Asura golems and Forgeman are magical to some extend (no?), and since these are, as you said, just human-shaped watches, how does that work?

Well we got a clue about Watchwork AI during the fall of the Tower of Nightmares. We know they respond to code words, or sentences, and then act out their pre-programmed behavior.

Because the Durmond Priory is there (the protectors of lore) and Anet seeks out to destroy it.

Could the power source for Scarlet’s twisted watchwork be chaos magic? One constant among them all, marionette included is a strong green glow coming out from eyes and joints.

One point of confusion at the moment is the nature of chaos magic. Mainly, what IS chaos magic, and is it distinct from dragon magic? In the Thaumanova fractal, Scarlet said that chaos magic is a misnomer, and suggested that it was chaos magic the whole time. But was she referring to the chaos magic in that location, or chaos magic in general? That’s where I’m personally conflicted at the moment.

However, that said, the Watchknights had slots for crystals, either for power, programming, or both. We saw this in Scarlet’s abandoned lab with the Aetherblade data crystal. So then where did she get the crystals to power all of these Twisted Watchwork? Well, in the Molten Facility, we saw the Molten Alliance mining a massive amount of crystals (that appear identical in shape to the Chaos Crystal Cavern). I personally believe that these were chaos crystals. If that’s the case, then perhaps she used these crystals to power her devices.

Just like in the open-world Thaumanova Reactor, refined/used chaos crystals leave behind a green ‘chaotic residue.’ That may be the source of the green glow.

As a bonus point, what if chaos magic is actually dragon magic as Scarlet suggested? Well then, all of her devices are running on dragon magic, and no one has really ever seen this kind of thing before.

So back to your question — I do think that they are powered by chaos magic, as well as all of her massive portals.

The crystals would have had to have come from a specific dragon considering the color of the twisted watchworks…… but which one?

Not Kralkatorrik obviously nor Jormag or Primordus…. The only Dragons left are Zhaitan(who’s energy is green so his energies might be the power source for the Toxic Alliance and the Twisted Watchworks), the Deep Sea Dragon(we don’t even know it’s color) and the Jungle Dragon(we don’t know his color either).
