Not sure if this is the best place to ask but if anybody knows it would be you lore hounds. I was just looking at the legendary great swords and I noticed. Twilight, Sunrise, and Eternity all have a keyhole on them right above the handle. Which brings me to ask

…Wut does it open O.O

Isn’t it obvious by what we see in the blade of the weapons?

The secret of life itself.

However, unlocking them is forbidden because then you’ll unravel reailty itself by messing with the natural order.

:p

Never noticed a keyhole but then again I don’t own any of those three legendaries.

Lost opportunity on ArenaNet to have a drawing animation where the stowed version is just the handle and as you unsheath it a magical key appears in the keyhole and ‘unlocks’ the ‘blade’.

But anyways, we have pretty much no lore on the legendaries so it’s hard to say. It could have purpose, it could just be decorational.

Since the High Wizard wields it, my guess is thakittens into the apparent job as gate guardian.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Considering the 3 greatswords are literally a piece of the sky that has been turned into a sword (not canonical, just a superficial observation.), maybe they were sealed into the hilt, and locked in place with a magical key of sorts. Who knows.

Im hoping we get more lore about the current legendaries in HoT, when we get the new ones.

As konig says, we wouldn’t know until we get more lore.

Which is my problem with a chunk of the legendaries is that without any story, they just look very weird/conflicting with the rest of the world. The pistol, mace, and the unicorn bow spring to mind easily.

The axe and shield fit nicely into the lore, former because it’s obviously an icebrood weapon, the latter because GW prophecies. The rifle is a little over the top for me, but I don’t mind it, and the dagger… we have welders in LA and camp resolve, though I’m not a fan of the dagger.

IIRC, the torch is named after several GW1 fire skills.

Yeah, there’s quite a few guesses as to the lore of each legendary. But in the end they’re just that – guesses.

We see the greatswords used by the High Wizard of Orr. Frostfang looks like a clear icebrood weapon as you said, the shield has ties to human history and Prophecies, even quoting Meerak the Shouter from Ascalon. The rifle and dagger both give off a charr-industrial feel to me. Rodgort, as said shares names with several fire magic skills in GW1, but by appearance and materials appears linked to the Flame Legion. Quip, incidentally, was used by Scarlet during Clockwork Chaos (specifically Scarlet’s Playhouse) – location and design places it as more likely tied to humans and their over-the-top-constant-celebration (aka that constant carnival) – same likely goes for The Minstrel. The spear is very obviously tied to the risen in the same manner as Frostfang to icebrood, and Kudzu seems tied to the sylvari (the female figure looks a lot like the Avatar of the Tree, IMO). Then finally the trident is obviously tied to the krait.

The speargun, staff, mace (sans name), shortbow, sword, hammer, and scepter are all mysteries completely, to me. Mace name, the Moot, is clearly tied to the norn but beyond that there’s nothing to link the two – so far.
