I just saw the Wonder Woman movie, not spoiling anything, but I was wondering if Aries and Balthazar might have the same motivation? Could they be after the same thing? For those who have seen the movie what do you think?

Considering both are literally the god of war, the same motivation sort of follows.

It would really surprise me though if somewhere in Tyria there is a hidden island populated by only female skritt that has collected the shiniest treasures in the world (among other things the famous Stick of Godpoking or the magical Shiny Rope of Skrittfrodite) and made a baby skritt out of trash.

I call it… Skrittyscira.

Well, I don’t know about the movie, but Ares (not Aries, that’s an astrological sign and a constellation) feeds off war in the comics. He gains his strength through humans waging war and strife, and cultivates it among humans to grow stronger. Since Balthazar basically said Tyria (and everyone in it) doesn’t matter, I’d say their motivations are different. Unless they gave Ares another spin in the movies, but I’ll have to wait one and a half week to find that out.

Meeeeh sort of kind of no. I suppose I shouldnt spoil anything but the Ares we see in the movie is actually closer to Balthazar in this regard. Remembers its the Murderverse, not like in the comics

It’s Ares, not Aries, and yes, the God of War was present in many parts of the world under different names.

Unlikely. Ares’ claimed motivation in the movie was that humanity was destroying the world, so he wanted to get humans to destroy themselves in order to save the world. Whether you actually believe him is another question.

Historically, Balthazar waged war for precisely the opposite reason – to achieve human dominance on Tyria (or at least, dominance by cultures who worshipped the gods). Balthazar in S3E5 seemed to be indifferent to Tyria – being willing to destroy Tyria in order to achieve his goals. This could mean that he’s changed his opinion on humanity, no longer believing that they’re worth his protection, but it’s also possible that he believed humanity could be evacuated if his actions did end up destroying Tyria. Either way, he is, at worst, indifferent to the fate of humanity.

So, we have Ares that wants to destroy humanity to save the world. Balthazar originally wanted humanity to take over the world, and now he seems not to care about either. Apart from both being war gods, they don’t appear to have the same motivations… and even then, if Ares was telling the truth about his motivations, it seems that Ares doesn’t actually like war, he just sees it as better than letting humanity continue.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Basically what draxynnic said.

Ares’ goal is to wipe out humanity. Balthazar’s goal is revenge against those who weakened him – he merely no longer cares about humanity, he doesn’t actively want to destroy the world.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
