If you destroy 90% of all the waypoints...

This made me chuckle. <3
I think it will be an interesting experiment if they removed all the WPs for a few days. See how much people freak out. I expect mounts and walking will be the hot forum topic for the month. People will claim, yet again, that Anet is trying to go out of business by ruining everything and the world is coming to an end.
yes take away all waypoints, make it adventure time.
take a leaf out of archeage, economy based on adventuring
and bring back reparation fees! :o ghgh
Curious question…. If you were to die when there’s no waypoints where the hell would you respawn? Where you first made your character lol?

I totally get and partially support the pro-waypoint-destruction argument. A More immersive and epic feel to the world never hurts!
HOWEVER
I wouldn’t count on it. It seems like a running theme that ANet wants everyone to do everything, and there’s just no way to fully enjoy the whole world on a regular basis without waypoints. You’d end up with a lot more empty maps. Not that it couldn’t necessarily work. I just doubt that’s the direction they’re going. I think at most they might end up culling a few of the more redundant WPs and/or implementing more events that contest them on a temporary basis.
Finally Events saying it’s the only way to get to a place so we have to defend it would make sense!
Events to escort a caravan make sense because those guys don’t have the pocket cash to pay for waypoints, or it’s more expensive then they care to pay :P.

Haha, actually I wouldn’t mind if they took out almost all the waypoints! With the reasonable exception of 1-2 in every zone as well as 1 at each dungeon entrance. While waypoints are convenient, for me this game really shines with the gorgeous landscapes which just invite traveling and discovery. Though then again, just like me you can achieve that already, by using them really sparsely.
I always laugh when I see suggestions to take away amenities because they make the game too easy. Everyone with an account should be an adult (by the agreement) and so should be able to make the decision to not use amenities if they want more of a challenge. I see groups and guilds in many MMOs that create their own challenges rather than demand the game be made more difficult for everyone else just because they want more of a challenge.
i can only agree if the following is met:
- no waypoint fee
- there is always one at each entrance (including dungeons), important areas and all the waypoints stay in cities.
- there is some kind of mount, doesn’t have to be a literal mount but a prof specific travel buff is the least we can ask for. (like eles riding a cloud or engi’s hovering with a jetpack)
i just can’t agree if they are not met, it’s bad enough that at some places there is no WP in sight while other places are spammed with WP’s.
I think this would cause the players who have no interest in lore to quit the game until the WP’s return.
Removing waypoints are a massive inconvenience.

Will be interesting to see if it affects the prices for items due to potential limited farming.
Maybe most people have enough alts to circumvent this.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
I don’t think it’ll be 90% of the waypoints, it’ll probably be all the waypoints on the path to Infinity Coil and the Pact base. Meaning we’re going to lose a few in Lion’s Arch.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Yea that will be great.
“Hey wanna do CoF p1?”
“Sure! Just give me 3 hours to get there.”
Can’t wait…
In order to make players cross the landscape, Anet needs to make incentives to do so. Not remove fast travel and force players to walk.

I have 20 alts, 16 of them 80 and fully geared. I would just plant a character in almost every zone and play that way. I have more things to do than walk all day.

I believe that this was all Ellen Kiel’s plan from last year. She gave you discounted WP costs to get you hooked, and now she’ll take them away. What we need now is for Evon Gnashblade to sell us a portable WP generator in the Gem Store so we can get past Kiel’s evil plans.

You got to let it go man, it’s not healthy *lol

Imho, there should be a better compromise between
- those who comprehend the game like a lobby with a character selection screen, an equipment locker, a chat and LFG, and a portals room to dungeons, farming sites, WB, and battle grounds, and
- those who want an open world to stride across, possibly with some other irl contingency implemented as well.
is just inopportune, firstly because of the game’s population profile. Are we really all with a mature mind, and what this maturity refers to ? Speaking of maturity, I’m not sure for instance that we all need a daily coffer as an incentive to play this game! Should we choose to not earn it while playing our way?
Secondly, and principally, what others do matters in a MMORPG (remember that they, and their actions, belong to your own game). Individualistic gamers just tend to forget this fact, however. Of course there is some needed social tolerance, such as not being exasperated when stumbling across another player dressed like an irl tourist or with bunny ears: again, it’s their choice, and our own game too, but we wouldn’t ask for a special filtering functionality to visually cull them whenever we come close together. Yet, does everyone understand that seeing to many people wearing bunny ears may spoil one’s game, just like any spammed shouting on the UI, that you couldn’t turn off? It’s the same when people appear and disappear in front of you, and use a functionality that you “maturely” decided to ignore.
For instance, first time I read that new WPs would be added just for guilds to access their new dedicated content faster, I really thought that Arena Net is shooting itself in its open, living, persistent, virtual world…
Suggestion:
- Let’s have WPs near all or most of the instanciated maps (and near guild puzzles if the opposite is unbearable). “Near” is still debatable, though.
- Let’s have one or two extra WPs on each map, provided they are erected in logical places, see below.
and…
- Let’s get ride of those indestructible, automatic cubic WP models in the wilds, whereas the “normal” asuran gates are damaged with a single explosive charge, and necessitate each one a qualified team to be operational. Seriously, there isn’t even a better range or a higher success rate associated with those normal asuran gates. The only difference is that they are free of charge (not counting the WPs in the capitals).
- Let’s replace the WPs with normal asuran gates properly manned, and build in protected (though contest-able) sites (such as Black Lion’s havens, and other outposts) or in any abandoned and ruined complex because lore-wise, it made sense for asuras to build and use/loan them in the past (place of power, temple, energy node, former mining facility, or why not harvesting station, etc.). The latter would need either some kind of Order’s team deployed to man them when they are repaired and on-line, or some kind of automation (but not as those inconsistent current WPs).
As for where would we resurrect when dead, there would s[t]ill be portals enough in any given map, imo. Remember what happened to the WPs inside the dungeons? The reasons why, the pros, the cons? Well, I feel like it’s time to consider what is the current open world compromise worth, and what would change in case of a slight or a more radical adjustment.

Altering of the existing WP system could be interesting if done properly. I do agree there are between 30% and 60% too many WPs currently in game and removing some of them would not be the end of the world (nor incite mass exodus from the game).
I often roam the open world even when I don’t need to (usually to pick up needed Dailies) as I find that one of the most enjoyable parts of the game.
Now….for the inevitable, “Remove WPs and add MOUNTS!!!” threads….
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
I seriously doubt if 90% of the wps will be removed or rendered useless. I do think that some of them will be compromised or made useless……and I think this will add to the intrigue and tactics used in fighting this new evil. I like the idea and am looking forward to logging in tonight after work!!
Also completely agree with Grimm above……..Mount threads inc!!!!
Mmo players with a screw loose vs mmo players with two screws loose. All very important stuff.

I actually wouldn’t mind too much if some of the waypoints were removed. There’s honestly an overabundance of them in some areas where two (or even more) waypoints are in close proximity to each other. (The Guild Puzzle waypoints are a good example of this.)
I wouldn’t mind if they reduced the number of waypoints IF they gave easy access to mounts that allow you to move at twice Swiftness speeds, AND if they added in “checkpoints” to the open world that would allow you to respawn closer when you died. The Dry Top run-backs are way too far.
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”

Indeed and it just further evidence that the people that mostly post in the forums are not indicative of the overrall majority of the playerbase of the game, and frankly I’m thankful for that.
I say remove all the waypoints, and if your character dies then he can’t resurect anymore and you’ll have to make a new character from scratch. Maybe get your new characater and bury your old one. And get a hidden achiev for doing that.
I say put waypoints everywhere, at least at the beginning of each platform, with banker, merchant, free repair, and portable crafting station. Add resurrection orbs for 1 sp and a few potion/orbs slots above the skill bar. Maybe get a locker to store all our avatars and make it possible to change character just before traveling through WP or resurrecting. Of course, get rid of all this ridiculous background bla-bla when creating our war machine. And add twice as many achievements, so that we really know what and when to do in this game.

There is nothing stopping you from striding across the world right now. I really don’t see the issue.
“We should remove all buses from the world because I prefer to ride my bike to work rather than take the bus.”
Huh? O.o
I would be willing to accept WAY LESS waypoints.. It would make world boss farming a little more difficult and realistic. But if you really got rid of them all, ANet would lose a huge portion of their customer base.. (the lazy ones). Not to mention it would be nice to at least get to a map without having to traverse every map between the one you are on and the destination

I really hope this is sarcasm, because I laughed really hard believing it was. I think that the “dying” process in GW2 should be a should definitely be a little bit more of an inconvenience.
They got rid of WP rushing in dungeons and it made the game harder (but better) in my opinion. Maybe you should have to restart farther away from where you were, maybe this would encourage people to build sustainable builds and not want to die, instead of having a bunch of people running around with zerker builds, dying and just quickly WP’ing back.
Considering the tears that have been poured on the forums over simply contested waypoints and people having to run short distances to their destination, I don’t think we would be able to handle the flood that would come about from removing WPs.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
it’s anets way of giving us mounts

it’s funny to call players who want to save time (and don’t have much to begin with) lazy……
Remove waypoints, give me my own pact airship. Surely I’ve earned it by now, right?

I wouldn’t be calling for the removal of WP if I were you. I can see Anet removing the ones closest to the jumping puzzles, all the ones in Orr except the one in the middle of Cathedral of Eternal Radiance and Arah, and all the WPs in the dungeons just because you asked.
it’s funny to call players who want to save time (and don’t have much to begin with) lazy……
I’m talking about players that don’t want to run anywhere and complain profusely about contested waypoints (running an extra minute from here to there). I’m also talking about people who rely on WP’s to champ train or event train or quick-farm nodes or spam-rush world bosses. Basically, the extremes. Yes, I find most of the people who do these things to be “lazy”. They want, quick loot or quick levels or quick achievements. Then they complain that there is nothing to do..
I use WP’s too and like their convenience. I also don’t have a ton of time to play this game anymore either as I work multiple jobs, but I would enjoy there being a bit more exploration in such a beautiful game. Instead of mindlessly grinding away at map completions and world bosses and champ trains. Sorry, but I don’t think thats the way any game was meant to be played.
That being said, I don’t think that all WP’s should be removed and we should have to run everywhere all the time. If someone wants to emerge themselves in the game that much then they could simply not use WP’s and run everywhere. Problem solved. But I don’t think that removing a good portion of them is a totally bad idea. It would add more to the game play experience and enjoyment of scenery built in. But that’s also just my opinion.

And? let them play how they want to, don’t kitten eveyone off because of some vendetta.
