Living Story 1
We all love and miss ls1. But anet does not seem to care enough about it to remake it. They said they don’t have the resources. Then we say we won’t mind paying a few gems for it. But coin never seems to hit them
I feel it like an art loss. The same feeling (obv less in intensity) when you think about all the books that humanity lost in the fire of Alexandria library.
Everything is already programmed, why so difficult and expensive to just “reupload” that?
It’s not in game because it was designed not to be repeatable. Many warned against this at the time, but it was too late by then. By the time Season 2 had bedded in enough for it to be acknowledged as the framework for moving forward, it was too late to go back and pour a large amount of resources to remake an entire season. It’s isn’t a case of it being programmed so just release it. It has to be reworked to fit the current model (half of S1 was during festivals so that would all need stripping down for starters and changing) and then re-coded to mesh with all the layers of new code and changes that have happened since.
Should it happen? Absolutely. Will it happen? I highly doubt it now.

Of course they care about it. It’s simply a lot more costly to update LS1 to the current game than most of us realize.
The problem isn’t a lack of resources, it’s whether working on LS1 is the best use of those resources all things considered; 800 gems a pop isn’t going to generate enough revenue to cover it.
I’m not sure if this is a good idea or if it’s even possible but I think between living story seasons they should reset the main map to the way it was at launch and let us replay season 1. Each chapter could be released every 2 weeks with different rewards each time it gets released. After season 1 finishes the map will go back to the way it was at the end of the current living world release. With the length season 1 was this will give Anet more time to plan out and create the next living story season. It will even give us the content we keep asking for.
If they were to do the Origins of madness story again id say, do it on the 10th anniversary.
It’d be a good time to do it when everything else is done, like a way to round everything off from previous chapters.
A lot of season 1 has been rolled out in the form of fractals, which is a nice compromise.

True, although Nightmare is barely anything like the original. Not saying that as a complaint, I enjoyed the fractal and I appreciate it had to be redesigned to fit, it’s just nothing like the Tower of Nightmares from S1

Fractals inherite locations, bosses, but not the story part. You can’t tell what is the story behind nightmare tower on dredge facility if you just play fractals. For the new player it is just like: “What are Rox and Braham doing here? Is it a 6-meter tall metal charr and a dredge Gurren-Lagann? Why is there a tree growing from a glowy krait? Whats happening?!” And thats a pity.

That’s exactly the problem, you go from Killing zhaitan straight to investigating Scarlet’s hut in the Dry Top with people you’ve never ever seen before

You go from Zhaitan to a recap of season one and in-game explanation of why it has gone away, and then on to Dry Top. It’s not … well, definitely not gonna say great, but at least it is more than zero explanation between the two.

First of all, that was hardly an explanation, and secondly that explanation wasnt ingame for longer than a year so all the confusion that spawned in the meantime is legit. And tbh, if I hadnt played LS1, I wouldve still not known in the slightest what happened after watching that.. well.. whatever that recap was
There are several issues raised in this thread:
- Would it be good for new players (and for veterans) to have access to LS1’s story as playable content?
- How costly is it do make that content available, relative to other things ANet could be doing?
- If ANet continues to choose to prioritize other content instead of LS1, what is a good and inexpensive way to do that? Does the current “recap” work for that purpose?
I don’t think I’ve even seen anyone say no to the first question: everyone would love to see LS1 again or for the first time.
The problem (Question 2) is the cost: the open world parts of the story need to be adapted for instanced content. A lot of what made it great was the transient nature (you had only a few weeks usually) — permanent content needs to replace that sense of urgency with something else to make it comparably fun. Even the instanced content depended on the mechanics at the time of release: all of that has to be adjusted for elite profs. And last, but not least: the rewards have to be adapted — I’m not bothered by hoarders potentially losing value; any content needs appropriate rewards that add to the economy, without hurting it and it takes an enormous amount of attention to detail to get that right.
Generally, new content is simpler to get right than nostalgia, appeals to more people than nostalgia, and doesn’t cost a lot more. In short, it’s a better bang for the buck to introduce brand new content rather than restore old content.
Finally, does the current Recap do a good job of introducing the gap between PS1 and LS1 to newcomers? I don’t think I’ve seen any player who thinks so. I’m not sure any of the developers do either — it seems introduced as something being better than nothing.
I’d really like them to take all the video they already have and string it together in a series of cutscenes, linked by very short narratives. If a fan can do something like this:

… imagine what the pros at ANet could do using the same material?

thats what i dont get sure new content is fun and all but its the first presentation of a game that make the biggest impression on a player many ppl have the first impresion of watching a 4(?) ish min vid that explains what happened in an entire lw season and then they are droped with some characters and tbh the vid doesnt even make a nice job
(might i add that if they go back and re add lw1 at some point they should take a look at ps as well)
Since the Devs stated, previously, that they would consider adding back Living World Season One, possibly in the form of Fractals, and they have done so (released new Fractals based on LWS1) for some parts, I would be surprised if they re-release it in a contiguous form, much like it was previously.
I think it will come mostly, if not only, in the form of Fractals. They may, or may not, provide another recap, but now that there is a community-provided one, I’m guessing they won’t.
Good luck.
Another problem is, the more they put in fractals, the less likely it is they will ever go back to ls1 because they can argue mechanics are already ingame, even thiugh adtherblade, molten duo and nightmare is nothing like ls1 other than the asthaetics
I made and compiled a 3hour and 19min video of Season 1 Movie that includes all the cutscenes, dailogues and lore narrations here:
This is pretty much all you need before playing Season 2 and HoT.
Enjoy =)
A lot of season 1 has been rolled out in the form of fractals, which is a nice compromise.
A lot?
You have half of two different dungeons turned directly into fractals, and a third fractal made of another theme.
You don’t even have a quarter of Season 1 in fractals.
Even if you add the rest of it in fractals (you cannot), you still skip out of the story. There is nothing relating the Nightmare Fractal to the Tower of Nightmares arc except for looks. Even the Toxic Hybrid aka Ensolyss has nearly no similarity in speech to the original (sounds more guttural while talking a lot more) let alone story.
At best, the five fractals are just “a taste” of what Season 1 was, and a poor one at that – like the recap.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

And its only the visuals, too, half of the story was omitted from the first ones, and there was no story in the nightmare tower (related to Ls1)

I’m pretty sure that is all they were intended to be: a taste, not a replacement.

You know, that is called teasing. Giving a little peek on something you can never touch. For me personally it is very depressing.
