I just got finished with all of the steps to create this lovely little creature. When I first found out about it my first thought was “ooh a pretty plant for my Sylvari Mesmer!” So that was my motivation.

The first parts were admittedly a little tedious and kinda boring, but then I got up all of the components to make it and that was when I got my first taste of connection to it. Crafting this took me to several maps and I got to revisit old places I did with friends/guildmates back in the day. Needless to say it was a trip down memory lane, and while I was meandering down that lane I ran into some people doing what I was doing.

This is where it gets a little weird for me, as I am generally a solo player (now that my old guild fell apart due to internal reasons), I whispered one of the people who seemed to be having trouble. Along the way we ended up having to do all the escort and pre-events to all the mini puzzles and such. This person and I ended up partying up! I had so much fun doing it too and we ended up with a large group toward the end. We decided to not just stop at the components. We finished the whole thing, cheering each other on, helping each other figure it out.. for the first time in awhile I put down my Solo player mentality and opened up to find that despite my run ins with some bad seeds (pun intended) recently, this game and its community are filled with awesome people!

It made me stop focusing on my end goal for once, and instead I ended up just having a lot of fun. The journey to get there was just as rewarding as the end product! I’m glad I didn’t let the daunting task of its steps prevent me from accomplishing this.

tl;dr: I love this aspect of creating an item! It not only attached me to the item (and the little shop of horrors homage tugs on my nerdy side), but also it gained me a couple new friends. I generally enjoyed my time making it and now I am proud to have done it. Thank you ANet, whoever dreamed this up is really on to something!

Awesome story! I want the devs to know that good ideas will be recognized by the majority of players (obviously not everyone can be pleased…). Audrey just happens to be one of these amazing ideas.

While I like most of this backpack (from what I have been told – and yes I liked the ‘scavenger hunt part’ of it), there was one major flaw in it’s execution. The basic fact that it screwed over everybody that is not a heavy crafter, most noticeably for the first instalment of the backpack, which means I will not get this backpack (not even the base skin) for a considerable amount of time…

I love the backpiece, and the exploration and item gathering needed for it! But I had a problem with the need for 500 level crafting for Mawdrey. When the Ascended tier was released, I said to myself “This is not for me, I don’t run fractals so I don’t need the infusion slots, I just won’t do it and that’s fine with me.” Then stuff like this comes out. The same thing applies, I don’t need the Ascended version because I don’t do fractals; however, I want the look of the final Mawdrey. I guess I’m just whining that spending the extra dough to get 500 crafting used to be optional for people who wanted Ascended gear for the fractals-related utility. Now it’s become something other than it was when it started, and that’s a little irksome to me.

I’m not complaining about having to work for stuff I want, I guess I’m just saying that this seems inconsistent with what Ascended gear and 500 level crafting was about when it was introduced.

I don’t think it’s different. It’s 500 crafting to get an ascended piece of armor with a skin you want. This applies to all craftable ascended items. If someone wanted the skin of one of the ascended armor skins, they would need to get the necessary profession to 500 even if they don’t care about the ascended armor (or agony resistance) itself.

That’s a fair point. Maybe I just never saw it that way since the Ascended stuff is so visually unappealing to me.

Please don’t derail my thread with your complaints. There are two other threads about that. This thread is about my journey in getting this item and the fact that this is one of the first new scavenger hunts that was actually in depth to the point where I actually find myself attached to the item.

I will say this though, every component that needs “crafting” for this item is purchasable on the TP. I priced it out for my second account doing from the first version to the third version is about 80-90 gold if you are only buying the components that you would otherwise have to craft. Furthermore, there is only one bit that takes level 500 crafting (the heat lamp which is about 20gold to buy). The others require only level 400 which is significantly cheaper.

A final note that I forgot to mention in my story above; Thank You so much for putting to use older items like Charged Quartz that I had just piling up haha. I love it when you mix new and old crafting components. Its engaging.

Awesome story! I want the devs to know that good ideas will be recognized by the majority of players (obviously not everyone can be pleased…). Audrey just happens to be one of these amazing ideas.

Yeah! That is why I wanted to tell my story. This also gives me hopes for future things. Imagine if Precursor crafting did something like this? Only on a bigger more epic scale. That would make it fun to get and keep its value on the TP (especially if you make the crafted precursor a account bound item). Oh, the possibilities are endless! And I do enjoy the fact that it is making crafting even more important but it doesn’t restrict non crafters. They just have to buy some extra items really. I am working on it now on my second account. I ended up buying most of the stuff for that one instead since I don’t have many crafting disciplines leveled there and I’m impatient with a lot of money. So I like that I can just buy some of it off the TP but that doesn’t take away from the “hunting” of things since that is afterward.

I am working towards just this. I have most of what I need and today ran my first fractal with some absolutely awesome folk. I feel so much better about fractals now. The posting was level 1, everyone welcome, but they did ask for a commitment to stay through the entire time which was just fine for me. Two of the folk knew the fractals we were doing and I had been reading up on them which helped. I enjoyed my time and time passed pretty quickly and we had a lot of fun. (plus the loot was pretty good) Definitely going again until I get what I need for Mawdrey.

I am also helping hubby out on the crafting side where I can because he does not have his levels up in some areas (mainly for the plant food). Plus I have the recipes and I don’t think he ever got them.

I also enjoyed the re-exploration of some areas I had not gone back to for a while.

So, yes, Anet, thanks for an interesting way to craft this. It has made me step out of my comfort zone a bit and expand. I may not do fractals on a regular basis but I am certainly not sorry I have tried them.

Great story – and crafting Mawdrey/Mawdrey II seems like a good prototype for precursor scavenger hunt, so go ahead and follow this format, Anet

Both in terms of requiring components from fresh content to tie in with current story, but also leading you on a merry go-round the old block to revisit all those old places to complete events, mini dungeons, etc.

It really works. Of course, the time gated crafting is annoying me because I have to portion this out across 21 days just because Anet say so, not because of the exhaustive task. But still, it “teaches” patience and works so that die-hards don’t farm themselves 24/7 to death and complete their precursor in 3 days.

I just finished the one before this, and was thinking about pursuing this one too. I kinda like the epic and long crafting and trekking around the world to get the pieces to do these things. I can’t help but think some of this isn’t a dry run for at least a component of how legendary crafting will work.

At any rate, I’m a bit intimidated by the fractal part, and want to make sure I don’t do something wrong there. Do I just need to go on 5 different days? Is there anything special I need to do to collect the item I need, or is it part of a reward chest (lower right) for completing the instance? Or is it like a big ground chest, and I don’t want to miss it? Do I need to talk to anyone at the beginning or end? Or do I really just have to solicit a group or wait until a level 1 pops up and join?

Sure hope I can get this done, the pet sounds fun.

Fractals sound more scary than they really are. The item you need from the fractals is the Pristine Fractal Relic. I twas previously only gained by brackets 10+ from the daily chest. Awhile back ANet changed that so that even the first tier got you a relic.

If you are just starting out I would suggest doing level 1, 5 different days. If you have some knowledge you can do any level 1-9 for the first, and then change it up with another in the 10-19 bracket.

It only sounds confusing because there is like with other dungeons a Bonus Daily Chest (where the Pristine Fractal Relic is given), but that Bonus chest is broken up into the different difficulty levels. A seasoned Fractals Vet can get all 5 Relics easily in one day.

The brackets look like 1-9 (any set will be a daily), 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and Finally 50. From what I remember 50 is the only one you don’t get a daily chest for, but they might have fixed that.

If you don’t have a group of friends or a guild willing to teach you Fractals people like me set up LFGs at level one that look like “lfm Level 1, Patience Requested as we are Teaching New People” these are the best ones to join in. If you if you are really scared feel free to PM me in game and I will see what I can do about a teaching run for you.

Just to comment on this, that’s not how the reward brackets are laid out. They go 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 and 41-50. That’s why you don’t get a separate reward chest for 50, as you noted.

The confusion comes because while those are the reward brackets, the Agony brackets are instead 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 standing alone. That means if you do a scale 10 fractal, you’re dealing with the higher tier Agony but only getting lower tier rewards.

Yes that is what I meant, sorry I typed it wrong thanks for the correction. However Agony doesn’t start until level 10 and its okay without an resistance until about level 15. Here is an Agony Chart with the numbers: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Agony_Resistance

Also here’s a good reference though: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Fractals The GW2 Wiki is a wealth of knowledge.

I also loved making this back piece. exploring old locations, finding things I never knew existed, collecting mats, having a use for all those crafting professions I leveled up. This is what all high level skins should involve. It is a much more involved process and gives you a sense of accomplishment at the end instead of just grinding gold until you buy it off the TP.

I hope they do far more things like this in the future.

Did my last fractal today and made my Mawdrey which I love. Mawdrey II is also very cute and very hungry. Sure hope it doesn’t do a Tamagochi on me if I fail to feed it, lol.

I do have to say this was actually enjoyable to do with the variety of things you had to collect or make to do this. While fractals may not be my favorite thing to do, I learned a lot with the ones I did, got some nice loot and did not feel that that part of it was much of a grind. Foxfire now that was a grind, lol.

Fractals you have to take with a grain of salt. Everyone I met was pretty nice, did see some who quit, I assume in frustration, but overall it was not a bad experience. In several we had to work hard to complete the fractals but everyone stuck it out and we eventually did. I think that made me feel that it was more of an achievement than if it had been easy.

Overall very interesting experience and definitely worth it. For me this one was a winner.

Its very lovely to see such positivity in my thread about this. I have no made the Mawdrey on both of my accounts the second one taking some time because I had to farm Bloodstone Dust…. Yes you read that I farmed dust hahaha. All in all with both experiences I ended up happy! It was nice to get the interaction with others and with the second one a few of the events had just been completed but I still found players inside the mini dungeon and willing to help with a quick Map Tele people came to my aid when I needed. It was joyous.

I have another question about the fractals?

I’ve done 3/5 so far, and not all have gone super well. I always join ones that don’t specifically say something like “no wallys”, or whatever they say, and try to find one that says “daily lvl 1”.

I see that it’s a group of 4 that we do, and I get the item I need at the end. So my questions have to do with how you can tell what you are going to get?

I see there is a daily today to do “1 fractal”. Is that like 1 group of 4, that gets you the item? Or, is that “daily cluster of 4” a unique way to run the fractal to get that item, and some people run it differently? If so, how can I tell what I’m going to get in the LFG tool? Have I just been lucky so far, and the ones I’ve joined have wanted to do the little cluster of 4 that rewards the prize? Or, is “doing a fractal”, by it’s very definition, a cluster of 4 random encounters (at a given level) that reward you that item the first time you do it in a day?

And for that matter, for the daily achievement, the same question. Is it just one little let that people do and leave (leaving me with 3 more that I need to do), or is it by definition, a ‘cluster of 4’, and then you are rewarded with the daily achievement (and the stone thing you need for the mist stone thing, assuming you didn’t get one yet that day)?

2 more to do. I’ve been lucky so far, and no one has singled me out as being terrible, and I haven’t been kicked or anything, so crossing my fingers.

My Little Mawdrey

The fractal has a random group of 4 events that are done for that fractal. I joined one group for the last two events (I guess someone dropped out half way through) and I still got agony infusions and the Pristine Relic at the end. So I guess you are not penalized if you join one midway through.

If folk are advertising doing the daily, the ones I have joined are doing the entire fractal not just one of the events. I have seen folk advertising to do just one event (think it was the swamp one) and they may be working on an achievement.

I have gotten Agony Infusions midway through but the Pristine Relic always comes at the end. You will get Fractal Relics throughout as you go.

Some runs are rougher than others. My fourth run was harder. We wiped a lot but everyone was nice and we kept at it until we got it. If someone in the group quits, just advertise for someone else. I looked for groups that were either level 1, everyone welcome or noobs ok. I stayed away from the ones with little to no info and the experience yada, yada ones. Overall my experience was very good and the folk I did them with were outstanding.

Actually because of doing this, I started looking for and doing some of the dungeon runs and so far that has been a lot of fun. I guess you have to just pick the groups, go in and let them know you are a noob or have not done the path before and if they say they are looking for experience or something else, just say ok and leave the group. You can always find one more suited and you certainly shouldn’t take it personal if a group doesn’t work out. Everyone has a bad day….

A Daily is a set of 3 Regular Fractals and 1 Boss fractal. As only the boss fractal at the ends give you the reward chests for daily completion. They will all be the same difficulty level as they are meant to be completed together. 3 and a boss is considered 1 run. And they usually (at early difficulties) take about the amount of time as a slightly longer dungeon run would take.

Also the daily chest is broken up into brackets. Doing any set of three and a boss in the difficulty 1-10 will grant you a daily chest. Likewise for any set done at 11-20 would be another daily. So on and so forth.

And yes, they aren’t always easy there are 12 different fractals themselves each with different encounters and they are all randomized at what ones you get. Though ANet has further fixed this so that the shorter Fractals are the ones you get first and the longer/harder ones will be the ones you are more likely to get fractal 3.

Thanks folks. On a brighter note, they are starting to get more fun, and I’m starting to learn where I’m supposed to be in each of the cases and what I’m supposed to do. Still haven’t figured out how to avoid all the little red circles at whats-her-name, hopefully I’ll learn that before I run out of revive orbs.

I see there’s a monthly for them too. I’ll need to do one more round beyond what I need for Mawdry for that. I may just end up enjoying them enough to at least do what I’d need to for the monthly until I get better.

Which…if they were trying to nudge people into trying more things without overwhelming them, I guess mission accomplished. Still a little stressful for me, but getting not as scary, and for the most part, everyone in my pugs has been great, which I wasn’t expecting.

One more fractal day, one little mini dungeon thing (not Forsaken, I got that done, and actually happened to go when enough other people were there that I got the Explorer credit for the whole thing, which was awesome) and then I need to go grind out enough geodes for another round of bricks, and I think I got it!

Side note: Complete side note, but did anyone end up with an extra Chaos Orb that doesn’t seem to need to be completed or end up in any finished product after, I assume, making the back piece before Mawdry? I have an extra one, and it doesn’t seem like I need it, but was reluctant to throw it away. :\

That’s cool to know, I also am working toward Mawdrey (slowly, slowly) and I love it. For the first weeks, I sold all my 1 day mats (because the price was ridiculous!) and now I’m saving it up since the price is stable. Only 10 days to go to have that little dust eating monster!

One thing that I also like is doing run for foxfire cluster. It’s always a trill if you get lucky (4 cluster in 6 trees yesterday!) or if you will go empty handed… I know some people don’t like RNG, what I appreciat about this update is that all the components are tradable, so if you don’t want to test your luck, just hop on the TP!

If you are finding Fractals fun, if you are on the NA servers I would totally be willing to teach/explain fractals for you. The Mai Trin fight is a copy of the end half of her mini-dungeon from the last living story arc. The Cannons part with all the circles are on the ground the key is to NOT panic. Wait till you see the red circles and dodge into even a small space where there is no red. Be prepared to dodge multiple times sometimes. The other key is to spread out and avoid being near people as possible. Usually the formation is all one person to each corner of the room, and one person (usually a tanky person like War or Guardian who can take a few hits if things go bad) is in the middle part.

Also, for that fight just know even very experienced people sometimes fall down because the pattern of the red is kinda random at times. Note: try not to res someone Who is downed during the Cannon attack, wait until its over and Mai is back to try and res people.
