Something that has kind of been bothering me lately. I started playing this game in beta and was around for the Southsun release and the first kind-of-sort-of living story release with the karka invasion. I remember they were “pushed to the land because of the influences of an elder dragon.” Or something, correct me if I’m wrong.

But.. was that it? I’ve ignored a few LS events because I occasionally get burned out caring, though I wish I found them more engaging. Did that ever get touched upon again? Or is there still some mystery here? Or did it just literally get scrapped for the Scarlet thing?

You’re dropping assumptions (good ones though). It was said the karka are not something used to be found here, based on what I recall the largos saying when you interviewed one. “Something had to have pushed them here.” It could be an Elder Dragon (Bubbles? Zhaitan’s minions?) or something else acting up (Tequatl?) or just the change in the world catching up with their normal migratory habits.

Something did take place on Southsun but it wasn’t about the karka as much as it was about Canach using what he knew about Southsun and its flora/fauna to make trouble for the Consortium (and the Refugees).

Hm… I could swear I remember hearing “Elder Dragon” references during that time. And when I checked the wiki I got-

“The karka are aquatic creatures from the depths of the Unending Ocean that have recently been forced onto the surface of Tyria by an Elder Dragon, after the defeat of Zhaitan by Pact forces.¹ They settled onto Southsun Cove and created a large hive on the volcanic island.”

Though I know to take that with a grain of salt and that doesn’t automatically mean “OMG BUBBLES IS COMING”. I guess I just find it strange it seems that story got left behind. Or who knows, maybe it will be involved in the ending of this LS season, though at this point I don’t get my hopes up for that anymore.

I just wasn’t sure if others actually had the answer and I didn’t know it, or if it is still that “mystery.”

Wiki is written by players, not developers. So it is just assumption of what happened.

Just wondered where that basis came from.

It felt like it was being pretty strongly hinted at the time, but I don’t think I remember anything saying specifically ‘dragon’ but just something big and nasty. In Tyria there are admittedly a lot of things that fit that bill xD;

My guess is that it was part of the build up for Tequatl’s evolution, but that’s more my own speculation than super well founded on anything. I’d like to think that Bubbles is showing up soon, but I kinda doubt it.

imo bubbles will be the last ED we fight, it may even be after elona if it is ever released

I think the Southsun timeline is roughly
- Southsun rises from the ocean, possibly at same time as Orr
- Karka move there from deep oceans
- Consortium explore Southsun resulting in attack on Lion’s Arch
- Kiel leads invasion of Southsun by the Lionguard
- Consortium settle Flame & Frost refugees on Southsun
- Canach stirs up the wildlife with mutant flowers until he is captured
- Current situation

Briefly after the invasion of Lion’s Arch you could gather clues from the Largos and Quaggans. They suggested the Karka came from the deep seas. They repeated the general lore about races being driven from by deep sea by something terrible (deep sea dragon). Since then nobody has talked about where the Karka came from.

ANet have a habit of leaving plot lines. They did it with the Evenia story with beyond, the founding of Ebon Hawke, Plawo Joko. Mqybe we will find out in guild wars 3.
