The Difficulty Curve
I love my Mesmer to death. Quite literally. He dies every time a HoT/LSS3 mob sneezes at him.
I do feel that mobs in HotS are overtuned, and deal dramatically more damage than in core Tyria. I don’t have this problem on my Elementalist or Necromancer, since they have more passive defenses (whereas the Mesmer only has active ones).
I can’t really say whether it’s a skill issue or a design issue. I do feel like I have to monitor every single move as a Mesmer in open world PvE and personal stories, or risk dying – whereas my Necromancer and Elementalist have much more forgiving gameplay.
Don’t know how you manage that, i played through HoT solo on my mesmer without much of a problem, same with the LS Areas.
Yes, yes, by now we’re all aware of the fact that you have no problems with anything at all.

No, i’m not saying that. But i wonder how the mesmer in question was build and played to manage to be killed by sneezing at. You have excellent movement on the class, you can control small to medium groups pretty well depending on setup and your defense isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
And you know what? I’m playing possibly the worst setup the current “meta” has to offer, core mesmer with staff on dueling, chaos, illusion. I use three Glamour sklls because i like being able to support others, my selfheal is mirror (because the extra projectile counter is nice) and my stun breaker is Mirror Images.
Now tell me, how do i go through HoT solo, including the fight against Modremoth, and not see the problems that seem to plague this class for everyone else despite most people even using the oh so great Chronomancer spec.
And this doesn’t mean i never die to enemies, or that i don’t run into a challenge.
If i die though that is my fault, either i didn’t pay attention to some enemy placement or misjudged some cooldown but it still doesn’t detract from the fun i have the rest of the time.
Hell, my core guard currently goes through HoT and while i can’t do everything solo, like certain skill points that i will revisit with my guild at some point, i still have fun and manage most fights without much of a problem.
His setup? Radiance, Valor, Virtues. Mace/Focus, Scepter/Torch, Shelter, Purging Flames, Wall of Reflection, Hallowed Ground and Renewed Focus.
Again, because i like to support people i meet in events, and what i do solo, truly solo, works out just fine.
It’s challenging at times, i maybe have to swap out a skill here or there but you know what? That’s okay, it’s one of the tools the game hands me to succeed.
My question is this: How do you manage to die all the time in HoT but go through core game like butter? Could it be that HoT isn’t hard but the core game too easy? Because i think that’s the way to look at it.
During the core game you learn nothing, absolutly nothing about your class, how combat works or teamwork applies.
Most people even seem to think they play solo when they are in a group event with 50 other players around, because, you know, that’s how solo play works.
And yes, that situation upsets me like nothing else.
If i could i’d crank up the difficulty of the core game beyond what we had in the beta just so maybe people learned that working together, and how that is achieved, is something good and goes beyond just stacking up damage.

They seem to be more interested in making the game more like the avaerage mmo to draw in more people so I doubt it’ll go back the way it was, probably more in the opposite direction.
Putting the bugs aside there was not much about HoT or the LS3 that was difficult except that jade bow that appeared at the Caudicus fight which has since been removed. More to the point so long as you have a friend who isn’t likewise handicapped you should be able to duo all of it or at the very least the other person solos it.
To be clear I have carried people through that modremoth fight and one thing I have noticed in common with every single one of these people is they do nothing but auto attack. They don’t change utility skills to survive, they don’t use skills appropriately even if they are late on the timing, they just sit there auto attacking and moving around randomly. Sometimes they will have an immunity skill and use it after taking loads of damage but not receive a single hit till it’s worn off, no quick use to prevent damage it’s just used after taking damage for no reason at all.
Though maybe it’s because they were longbow rangers that made it a problem but still most of the fights are very manageable if you pay attention to the mechanics and switch things up accordingly. You even have brief moments where you can change skills and traits between fights while enemies and allies drivel on about how the world is theirs and we will all bow down before yada yada.

Instead of insulting people, you should try understanding that some people are just inherently better at things than other people. The best gunfighter could kill someone with a BB gun where someone else might have trouble hitting the side of a barn even with practice. That’s true for every skill.

Well, you can not make the barn even bigger to allow that outlier to hit it. That’s not the point of the game, IMO.
IF (and this is a massive IF) someone is truly SO incapable of improving at something, that person should really do another thing, more accord to their talents.

Where did i insult someone? The picture of dying by being sneezed at was used by the other person so i thought it appropriate to use it too.

My comment was a specific response to:
" I’m playing possibly the worst setup the current “meta” has to offer"
Not about the entire game.

I wasn’t talking about that comment I was talking about " i wonder how the mesmer in question was build and played".
Thinking about the difficulty curve some more, part of the problem is the ramp-up to HoT is now behind a paywall. Your average free-to-play player whose first game purchase is HoT a month after they rolled their first toon ever, is not going to shell out for LS2, so they walk straight from Orr into the tender embrace of the Verdant Brink Mordrem, raptors, giant beetles, smokescales, etc.
As a dogged completionist, I bought S2 and insist on completing it on each toon before taking them into HoT, and each time, my build and playstyle is definitely tighter by the time I land in VB. S2 provides a stepping-stone.
Are Dry Top and the Silverwastes part of the S2 package or can anyone enter them? Even if they can, they might not bother to spend any time there without a story leading them around. And even if they do, those map metas are not quite the same as the challenges they’ll encounter solo.

How is that an insult? I’m basically asking for information here because i have no idea how you can build a mesmer in a way that he dies in two hits.
Maybe i’m stupid that way.

Because I struggle with saying things that seem “nothing but the facts” to me, but are seen as insulting by others, as well — there is an implicit assumption in your question, which is that the build and/or player skill is why they are having trouble.
This might be true, but combine that with “I have no idea how …” and most people will hear you implying that “any reasonable person” would have trouble with this, rather than, say, “I don’t know how that could happen, because of my much greater than average degree of skill and knowledge here.”
It is also unclear what the endpoint of your question is: you didn’t make it clear enough what you were going to do once the question was answered, so at least some listeners will assume that it was a rhetorical “you suck” rather than a serious question that you intended to follow up with something helpful.
I hope that explanation assists you in understanding why your statement was seen that way, if you don’t understand that previously.
If anything i want information.
Everyone just keeps saying: I can’t do it, it’s too hard. No matter how i play and what not the enemies deal too much damage and everything just kills me by looking at me.
But i rarely see people explaining HOW that happens. What stats are used, what weapons, what utilities.
Only with that all known you can start looking deeper and maybe giving advice.
My skill by the way is not higher than average, i’m below or barely average at best because i can’t pull off the playstyle of glass canon in this content, not even sure i want to.
I may be old school with this approach but i’m under the Impression that you can’t deal damage when you are dead and simply dodging, hyperbole incoming, EVERY attack, isn’t cutting it obviously.
So if i came off as a insulting: My sincerest apologies.
If anything it was a badly worded attempt at helping.
Me saying what my characters use as weapons and utility wasn’t for bragging either by the way, it’s to illustrate the point that damage obviously is not the only thing that will move you forward.
But i rarely see people explaining HOW that happens. What stats are used, what weapons, what utilities.
Many people (like me) probably use the same builds that other players use that don’t find HoT difficult but are simply not as good at twitch combat. Other players might use builds that they made up as they went along. But if people wanted advice on their build and/or playstyle they would ask for it. Instead what this thread is about is the Difficulty Curve.

Okay.
Difficulty Curve.
It’s pathetic in the core game, even more so since the NPE and in HoT it’s on a level that someone with a character on 80 should be able to manage.
Done.
TLDR: The barn is normal sized.
