So, Ive recently replayed Season 2 of the living story, and the mail in the first episode got me thinking. We never actually found out who E was, did we? So ive started thinking who it could be. And then I got an idea.

Because there was something odd about his behaviour. For one, he never directly appeared anywhere. The only time anyone knew of his presence was Marjorys interaction with him. And even at that point she couldnt see him. He managed to stay out of her sight, and even get her into a position where he is in full controll seemingly without effort. So, he quite clearly has a lot of skill. But even when there were important issues, he didnt solve them himself, but instead told us to do it.

Furthermore, the things he knows are pretty specific. They all have one thing in common. Bandits or other criminal outfits are related. We have him knowing of the aetherblades plans before they succeed, knowing of activities in the Brisban Wildlands, an area largely controlled by bandits (as well as it being on the edge to Dry Top, where Bandits have been trading (as we know from Riot Alice, whose addition into Dry top was also fairly suspicious), and lastly Minister Estelles presence at a bandit gambling parlor around the time Scarlet Briar was talking to the queen.

Something that is especially odd is that he seems to have knowledge neither the shining blade nor the Order of Whispers seem to have. And despite having such knowledge, they dont share it, or their sources, unless it appears neccessary.

So, all-together we have E’s refusal to show themselves, or work in a public setting, combined with their knowledge in criminal-controlled areas and settings (Aetherblade, Bandits, and Bandit/Sinister Triad), as well as their refusal to share said knowledge or sources with other cover organizations that work for good.

And I think at this point its clear what Im trying to say. I believe that E is, in fact, the leader, or at least a high ranking officer in the ranks of the bandits. Of course, this in turn raises other questions. Why did he help us? Where exactly does he stand in the hierarchy, and why E?

Now, as for why he helped us, there is one possibility, that being him planning ahead. In case of Lions arch his goal wasnt to save anybody, but to try to prevent the uprise of another criminal outfit. After all, they were independant, and were unlikely to work together with him. So, a pure profit thing.

There is another aspect here I found interesting, that being Scarlets choices when trying to create alliances. In her secret lair, we see a small sketch, of all the alliances she tried to create, and which one succeeded. Interestingly enough, this included a lot of somewhat irrelevant factions. The Quaggans. The Largos. The Ettin. But also 3 of the 5 evil race factions, excluding the Sons of Svanir (likely due to them being Dragon Minions) … and the bandits. Which is quite odd, as Bandits control vast areas, and could be very useful as allies. She still didnt even trie it with bandits. Suggesting that she knew that it was a lost cause.

Then, we have the Brisban Wildlands thing, and the message he sent to Countess Anise. But in this case, It could be him simply estimating the threats, and coming to the conclusion that helping opposing factions might be the right call, if it helps defeat the Elder Dragons.

These possible explanations of course assume that he is the leader of the bandits. Now, this explains a lot, such as why he doesnt give information he clearly has to the Order or the like, and why he didnt deal with the Aetherblades directly. Being the highest-ranking criminal in Tyria, it would be quite impossible for him. And giving his enemies the information they need to combat him would be simply ineffective.

Now, what this doesnt explain is why he signs everything with E, and who he exactly is. What his relevance to the story (outside of being a puppeteer) is. But then again, that is likely only going to become clear a lot later. After the defeat of Mordremoth, most likely. After all, Bandits by themselves are a bit of a mystery in GW2 as well. They appear to have become highly organized, becoming a full pyramid-structured organization (similiarly to the Inquest, except even more effective), merely 1 year before the personal story. Additionally, they appear to have links to the white mantle (some Bandits appear to be a white mantle cell, and their symbols are really similiar). So its likely that they are building up for a story arc, one that is independant of Elder Dragons (arguably the most interesting type of story arcs).

Interesting thoughts. The only thing I figured out myself before was that he/she most likely is a human, since his only appearance was in Divinity’s Reach and he mostly contacts us when there’s something up there (like at the start of “Pary Politics”, iirc).

Would be great if HoM would have some, well, side-quests or anything, regarding some white mantle activities in the jungle. Maybe we’ll meet E there, too (well, maybe only in written form…)

If I were to guess the identity of Mr. E, my bet would be on Magister Ela Makkay. If my memory serves me, I think the devs stated in an interview that we’ve already seen E during Living World seasons without knowing who they were, and Makkay has actually been involved as an NPC during many of the LW storylines as one of those people you may or may not have interacted with/noticed.

She’s exactly the kind of character most people would ignore or not even notice, and yet her being a member in the Priory grants her access to information which she can then deliver to us and explain why E is so interested in uncovering the mysteries behind ongoing events. She’s human, so pulling her stunt on Marjory in DR was easy enough, and for added irony she appears to have been Marjory’s superior during her time studying in the Priory, which might explain the description about E’s touch feeling ‘intimate’ during their brief encounter in DR in Marjory’s short story. Makkay was shown to be very interested in LW events, chronicling the Molten Alliance invasion, Bazaar of the Four Winds and Tower of Nightmares among other things during Season 1, and she even granted us access to the Hidden Arcana later in Season 2.

Whether E turns out to be Ela Makkay in the end or not, though, I look forward to learning more about E’s identity and why E’s chosen to stay in the shadows instead of talking to us openly with the intel that has been provided.

I think its the master of whispers (not the one from the first gw game). the leader of a mysterious organization would be a pretty secretive person right? and we as players cannot actually encounter him/her yet.

the master of whispers can most certainly be encountered. It’s Riel Blackwater. you see that in the OoW storyline.

I think that, whoever it is, Riot Alice is either working for them, or at least knows who it is.

If you did the street rat personal story for humans, you run into her during your personal story. It’s worth noting that she does something nobody else in the entire game does, she sees through Countess Anise’s illusions. At first, she asks as if she’s not sure, but later she comes and thanks you for saying the things you said while under the illusionary disguise. That’s actually pretty impressive.

I fully expect them to use her again.

I still think E is a Mursaat.

I saw in one of Bog Otters videos how he showed a traitline that said something about the “Exalted” in their golden citys, and we saw those creatures in the HoT trailer that appeared to be what became of the Mursaat, but maybe they changed their name because they no longer wanted to be asociated with the ones that slaughtered humans and let themself be worshipped by gods anymore.

Would make sense for the Mursaat to try to help us after Zhaitans death, now knowing the dragons can be slain, to point us in their general direction without putting themself at risk, that has always been kind of their style.

It’s Chauncey.

Seriously.

One day, he appears out of nowhere. Cat wearing glasses and top hat. Doesn’t raise any eyebrows?

People love him. Lets him get into anyplace he wants, even royal parties. He’s the perfect spy. Who would suspect a cat?

So, why does his name not begin with E? His real name isn’t Chauncey. That’s what the people of DR named him. He just hasn’t corrected them yet.

He’s probably amused by the whole charade and will eventually show his real form at some point.

I think it’s the wizard. The one in the castle floating over the ocean in the corner of Kessix hills.

He sends out letters when he’s not enslaving elementals. Mostly to collapsed ascalonian ruins, sometimes to the Asuran peacekeeper’s customer relations office and recurringing to a noodle hut in Divinity’s reach – where he repetitively asks for a refund for a bowl of soup he never ordered.

He try’d to send a letter to an elder dragon once but it just stepped on the messenger – then ate the letter.

The messages sent to your character were actually meant to go to an ascalonian ruin. E’s request to Majory was just a side visit on the wizard’s trip to troll the noodle hut.

He gets kind of bored. No one ever seems to visit. He’s been thinking of landing the castle. On land.

On a side note, personally think its the countess. Cause, ya know, you can just send yourself a letter ocassionally – wizard doesn’t mail everyone.

My guess, Ellen Kiel. I’m thinking she wants to prevent anything that could endanger lions arch. However due to her position, she can’t be seen using espionage or dirty tactics that could implicate the city.
