I pretty much just quoted some things from the webpage, and some remarks may have gotten out of hand…

But basically, every single event/activity listed on the website has “a rare chance” listed for its reward, which in turn, disappointed me greatly. The last one in particular has this listed: “may even earn a rare chance at” which implies it is a privilege to even have a chance, at a chance, at a chance, at a reward

Also mentioned how the RNG tends to cause disdain between players due to having things such as “i got it on the first try, its not that bad” types of things appear in chat between players, when people who spend crazy amounts of time and/or money and get nothing tend to be frustrated by the entire thing.

and it still will leave players with a notion that they will never get something they actually want, because the steps of obtaining them legitimately do not exist. They need to add methods to obtain all rewards through ability, not simply “%chance to find chest + %chance of getting from chest” that is a terrible forumula.

example: I just recently got my wind back piece from the last update content. But I had to spend so much time trying to grind loot bags, to have a % chance to get a kite fortune…then get a random amount of fortunes from those to accumulate 150 (at least they ALWAYS gave you at least 1 fortune scrap though, so that isnt 100% bad I suppose) But I would have much prefered to do a scavenger hunt, or other activity, or achievement that allowed me to get this item, rather than it be up to chance. I could potentially be still trying to get it right now if the %chance didn’t like me and drops less loot bags, which dropped less fortunes, which gave fewer scraps…

tl;dr – Just a little disappointed that RNG is in such full motion regardless of how much people dislike it. and it still will leave players with a notion that they will never get something they actually want, because the steps of obtaining them legitimately do not exist. They need to add methods to obtain all rewards through ability, not simply “%chance to find chest + %chance of getting from chest”

RNG is the easiest way to make rewards exclusive. It’s a pain but there’s few good alternatives.

Look at the rewards for the meta achievements, they’re hardly special because everyone can get them.

It is very difficult to add a deterministic way to get items, without invalidating those items and without alienating the entire playerbase in the process. RNG handles all that in a relatively smooth way. It’s a lesser of evils if you want.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

There may be “few” alternatives, I agree. But they are there, you dont need a dozen alternaves. here are two ways to adress relative rarity without RNG:

1.Difficulty could make rewards exclusive.

2.Giving players a moderate task with a choice of several different rewards from which to pick only one creates a certain degree of exclusivity.

Both methods are much better then ultra-rare RNG solutions. I do find the difficulty method better suited to permanent content, though. But the second suggestion would be fine for most of the meta rewards we had, and then not everyone would have them all, but still get their favorite. Southsun would’ve let you pick between the tentacles, a red flower and a white flower. Sky pirates between a mini of Horrik or Mai, etc. The only reason to argue against it that I can see is from an “i want it all” point of view, which isnt the best position to hold imo.

@Mastruq.2463- like the second method best

I personally have no issue with the current system in BotFW, well not so much anyways. The way I see it, these has always been a balance between cash and grind. Devs or publishers need money of course, but to not make it mandatory there would be a free but grindy option. Therefore you could keep hacking mobs for chance to get kite fortunes, or spend money to buy them off the gemstore. The beauty of this system is however, you could in turn just farm gold; a direct and clear and obvious enough method, and use them to convert gems and then buy them off the gemstore.

The specific issue of this would be how rare should the kite fortunes be? They are kind of rare, but you will have to excuse me as i find it somewhat of a relief that it isnt as rare as a jade dragon ticket. also, yes it can be time consuming, but I also supplement by converting gold to gems and buying those kite fortunes.

I am a bit saddenned to see that for all the kite fortune hunting we do, theres only a choice of helms and backpieces. Would that it had options as much as previous weapon skin sets.

The other thing to add on is that I never really give a hoot as to what people got or have or use. so i couldn’t care much if i am the “select” few to use an item or if 9 out of 10 ppl on the server uses it. I only care for the fact that I have it or not. I can’t argue against the matter as it is likely a personal issue, but i think it would help if we focus on our goals more and less on other ppl.

Having said all that, RNG is always something I would rarely agree to. I NEVER got a single jade dragon ticket while a friend of mine can make his entore set based on several jade weapons. I don’t care much for the theme but the fact that he has 2-3 while i dont is frustrating as heck.

Fortune scraps (fortune kite) RNG, although I don’t like RNG system so much, is better. At least you are guaranteed to get something in the end although you are not that lucky. While the past box: success or fail. Which mean you may open 1000 boxes and get 0 ticket from there. At least with fortune kite, 1000 kite = 4 helms or 6 backpack skins which is far far better.

Yes, it is definitely better, but I would still prefer a more sound way….the drop rate is an issue, if maybe it was a chain reaction effect.

Every 10 crystals you find, or 3 BotfW events completed gets you a “token” save up 10 tokens for a reward. Have some kind of solid foundation to the reward system THEN throw in RNG. Not the other way around.

So it leaves you with.
Complete option 1 to get reward (lengthy, but guaranteed)
-or-
Play normally, wherever, and have a random chance at tokens dropping (or something similar)

Then aside from these rewards, have some bonus “exclusives” that maybe require an actual difficult achievement, or like the previous poster has said, a choice.

This was done in the personal story, completing certain story steps rewards exclusive skins, but you can only choose 1 of 3….this works. And if you want all 3, then you completely do the story on 3 characters to choose all 3. They did it right there, why all of a sudden does everything needs to be…..a rare chance

It reminded me, and has been said before in the past, that some would say the SAB style skin reward was good. By doing the content repeatedly, you are guaranteed bauble bubbles, which in due time you will have enough to buy a skin off the vendor. However there is a luck factor where you could get lucky and get a random skin from the chests in the event, which if you do not want, can be sold off at the trading post. So 3 methods of acquisition: Grind, RNG or gold.
Just thought to share that.

If the back items are tradable like the windcatcher pieces, I don’t have a problem with it. Just grind out a few gold if you really want it. If you happen to get lucky later, then sell it. Otherwise…..pure RNG for a strictly pvp mini game? No thanks.

You’d think if the rewards were really awesome, it wouldn’t matter if they were “exclusive” or not.

I agree with you but of course some people feel good about exclusivity; they like to have something that few people can get. I’m not going to argue because unlike some, I feel we should decide for ourselves what we like. Whether or not this sentiment should be catered to, i dont know.

Personally I couldn’t care less if it is exclusive or 99% of the population is using it, only that I like it.

Agreed. And people often miss the fact that the phase of “everyone is wearing them” only lasts through an update or two, until the next item takes everyone’s fancy.

I’m very happy about both the shattered wings and zenith weapons, because they fit what I was going for with my Sylvari Guardian when I started playing him at launch. Sure there are a lot of people are still wearing the wings, and zenith weapons are everywhere, but I’m already seeing fewer shattered wings than when dragon bash was running, and I expect in a couple of months I’ll be one of the few still running around with them.

Heres the problem i have with this. RNG i think is a double edge sword. Its great sometimes. i get what i need or want and im happy. Other times i don get it and its gone for good. But all in all im happy with A rare chance. This happend in wow. everyone was upset because they couldn’t get something to drop for them or they couldn’t get gear to drop so blizzard tried to fix it and look at wow now its being called Casual because everyone has the same stuff everyone looks the same. i dont want that in this game. i want to see someone with something rare and be like dammm that guy looks awsome. or atleast thats how i want it.

As far as accusation of games ‘being casual’ goes, there will always be a faction saying things are too easy and therefore the counterargument of being too hard. We are all different and we have different levels of skill, so really, trying to make it gnerally or in majority opinion as ‘not casual’ will likely make it so hard that only a select few ppl can enjoy it. Now I wouldn’t mind this in a singleplayer game maybe, but in a place where it is prefereable to keep up with others ( we are doing several contents together, in party etc, so under par characters can be a liability) i would rather opt for something most people can have a fair chance at.

But even then, RNG doesn’t really reward skill. It’s chance, it’s randomly generated crappiness that can reward even the worst players while excluding very skilled players. Furthermore the rewards most in question are skins, cosmetics. I never played WoW, i sort of stayed away from it because it seemed oh-so-generic rpg gameplay. Correct me if im wrong but the rng grind for better gear is actually gear that affects gameplay yes?
