I want to make a new character and try out a new profession like a thief, but never liked the fact of making an alt because I feel like I’ve lost all my progression with my main and I have to start over and it’ll take a while for me to get back how I left my main.

My main is already level 80, full exotics, and I have nothing else to do other than fractals (already level 16, but no AR yet), finishing my story or do random dungeons. What do you guys think?

Do a fractal per day then level an alt.

You lose nothing in this game really since its not a grindfest like most other games where you must play your “main” everyday to not fall behind.

I have 10 toons atm, lowest level is 24, got 5 toons on 80 already with 6th on her way (yeah, i spend too much here already… though mainly exping toons in AC and using the gold from AC to exp them with crafting). The ele, my first toon, has 100% map completion, story done, etc, though isn’t my ‘main’ now; everyone else is stuck at low lvl story and ~40% map tops, mostly ~15% (most from WvW).
I used to play only one toon, one and only, in all my previous MMOs, with others being mules or just bad necessity (crafters). I only started my altoholism in GW2, and only after i got the ele to 100% ‘everything’, and i think i couldn’t go back. It’s a lot of ‘work’ to get several toons to lv80 and gear them up (just time, tbh, but if you’re not rushing it, you’ll enjoy it nonetheless), but the freedom you get then when you choose what to pick for a guild dungeon run, with what to go for fractals or how you’d like to kill some people in W3 tonight… priceless.

I have 4 lvl 80s now, and it makes the game way more fun. This game isn’t like other MMOs where it punishes you for having multiple toons.

I would say at least finish your story, then roll an alt.

Give it a try. An alt does not mean you abandon your main. You are not deleting that character. Your alt just gives you an outlet to try new things. Good luck with it.

I’m an altoholic so I say go for it. Besides, you don’t lose -all- progression. A lot of what you’ve done is account bound. My second 80 got exotics much faster thanks to the stuff my main had built up, and leveling alts progressed various achieves.

On top of that, you will see more story, get more of an understanding of what the other professions bring to a fight, and get a fresh perspective on the game.

I’ll admit my altoholism is due to RP, not to wanting to get into the nitty gritty of game mechanics, but I keep finding new fun things each profession can do.

No idea what this means. The only obstacle to making an alt is the time it takes to get it up to level 80, and whether you have enough gold to kit it out with full exotics. I recommend you mess around in sPvP until you find a build that you really like before committing to leveling an alt for that class.

I leveled one of my alts by just running the daily events with him every day. I could pick up about 1 level in 1/2 hour. He didn’t even leave Metrica Province (Asura starter area) because the auto leveling adjusts experience upwards as you level.

The only thing that can make a character feel “main” in this game, is the one that wields the most expensive gear. (but stat are still the same as everyone’s else)

It’s very simple and fast to equip any alt with max gear.

So what kind of progress are you afraid to lose?

I too have a feel that I’m “cheating” on my main when I play others, but it goes away as you play the other class more.

I like having alts. My main is a thief but if a dungeon party I’m in could better use a guardian or mesmer, I can play one of them too (or ranger, but… nah).

Playing alts is a nice change of pace from time to time.

You’ll also get easy map completions again if you like for a chance at something “ok”, like BL salvage kits or keys. I recently got a key on an alt and ended up getting an endless mystery tonic out of it.

Parked my main as soon as I hit 80 with full exotics. Leveled 2 more characters to 80 and still haven’t toughed my main or either of the other two 80s either. Already working on my 4th and 5th alt, which to me is much more fun than playing a level capped character but that’s just my opinion of course.

Either way, nothing to be afraid of…it’s just a game.

This sentence is false.

Altaholic here also. I don’t have a level 80 yet or anything anywhere near 80. I’m a bit of a fidget in RL and can’t settle down to much for any length of time without getting restless. I just play what I feeling like playing on that day. Having said that I do admire anyone with the tenacity and patience to get a character all the way to 80 without even thinking of making an alternative.

Though wrinkles don’t look pretty, thankfully they don’t hurt.
