What should I be doing?
I assume most players are in the 70-80 bracket?

I’ve been doing the story, keeping all materials I find and completing maps before I move onto the next zone.

I feel like I’m missing out on something or maybe going at the game the wrong way. I feel empty with accomplishments in between every 10lvls for the story.

What can or if anything I could be doing to prep me to the higher levels.
I like both pvp and pve styles.

I started playing Sunday and I have a level 30 thief. I haven’t bought HoT yet till I’m higher in level, or should I but it now?

Thanks for reading and the help.

Just play the game man. Enjoy it.
Explore the world, talk to NPCs, listen to NPCs chatting to each other, do Dynamic Events, Vista challenge, Hero Challenge, unlock new waypoints and POI, do Jumping Puzzles and mini-Dungeons. Enjoy the Personal Story, do some Dungeons, Fractals and enjoy some PvP and WvW and gather everything you see and craft as much as you can.

Ultimatly just have fun.
Once you’re level80 and you buy HoT there is more fun to do with planety of new content and minigames you can enjoy like Adventures…

Do what you enjoy and try everything the game offers.

Yeah, I still haven’t done the level 30 dungeon? I’m looking forward to that. It’ll be interesting since I’m use to tank, dps, healer trinity mmos. I think when I see more people around I’ll feel better so to say, not many around it seems but I do understand it is 2? Years old.

I’ve heard WvW is empty though? Plus me being 30. Do I even have a chance in there ha.

Even though the dungeon opens at level 30, it will be difficult to get a group until you are 80. This is for a few reasons above and beyond the elitest mentality. 1) the gold reward was beaten with the nerf bat. 2)you won’t have all your specs available which will hinder your overall effectiveness.

Most players will have at least one level 80 character, because levelling up doesn’t actually take that long in this game. If you’re always doing level appropriate content you’ll progress at a fairly even rate (in other words it will take you the same amount of time to get from level 70-80 as from 20-30). If you’re doing content below your level it takes slightly longer, but not enough that you need to worry about it.

As far as what you need to do to prepare for higher levels the main thing is to simply learn the mechanics. Pay attention to what your skills do, make use of dodging and practice timing it so you actually avoid damage, try different skills and weapons to get a feel for how they work etc.

Other than that it’s simply a matter of playing the game, doing whatever interests you. There’s no harm in taking your time levelling up (although you can also go back and do anything you didn’t get around to after you reach level 80) as there’s no big change in what’s on offer when you get to the maximum level.

Oh, you might want to check out the Wintersday festival in Divinity’s Reach, which will be running until about mid-January. Lots of activities, mainly non-combat, and a dungeon which you can do at any level.

Also, if you find the area’s you play in are a bit empty, it might be because you’re on a lower populated server? You can check this at World Selection on your character selection screen. Here you also can choose another serever to be your home world, or try out a ‘high’ or ‘very high’ populated server as guest, so you can (temporarily) play there and see if it makes any difference for you.
The game being a few years old shouldn’t really be a reason for the maps feeling empty… One of the wonderfull aspects of this game is (i really think this is very clever ) your character will be downscaled to the lvl of the area you’re in.. so higher lvl characters can be playing anywhere. And often they are, as there are many reasons for them to revisit area’s they ‘lvled through’: for map completion, events, or just plain fun

And sorry if i’m telling you things you already knew here… just thought i’d mention it in case you had not realised this yet (being a new player and all )

It might be a few years old but I think there are more players now than ever. HoT activated many of the old players as well as brought in new players via f2p. So that shouldn’t be the reason why your maps feel empty. As the previous poster said, try changing to a higher population server. My maps atleast always feel full.

Yannir for males. (guard,thief,war,ele)
Sonya for females. (necro,rev,ranger,mes,engi)
All classes lvl 80.

Perfectly stated.

@ OP: You mentioned that you are looking forward to trying the dungeon. Dungeons can be a lot of fun but unfortunately, as someone mentioned, the dungeon rewards got significantly reduced so now its hard to find people willing to do them. Consequently, I would strongly suggest that you either find a small, closely knit guild that does things together or a large friendly guild where you will hopefully find enough people willing to do dungeons with you so you can try dungeons when you are ready. Also, joining a guild is a good way to met people, make friends, and get advise about the game from veterans.

World population has no bearing on PVE content since the Megaservers were introduced.

This would only be relevant for WvW.
