(didn’t mean for the topic title to rhyme in my head lol)

Hey all!

I currently have the GW2 client installing, and I’m looking forward very much to playing! I’m coming over from WoW after years of exclusively playing that. It just feels SO cookie cutter, and the game and classes are constantly changing, and it never seems for the better.

So, I’m posting because obviously I’m totally new to this game and was seeing if you guys have any general tips? A good world to choose, or perhaps know if this game frequently has any guilds that sort of take in inexperienced players and show them the ropes? (common in WoW)

Anyways thanks guys. Peace!

There is an entire forum for that and I suspect this thread will soon be moved there, but fear not, I will answer the best I can meanwhile;

As another MMO player fellow, who also had some history on W*W, I can tell you that this game beats WoW in almost every aspect (but healing, I miss healing so much…).

With the recent addition of LFG tool, lots of alt friendly changes (still a lot more improvements to be made in this department though!), interesting and rewarding dungeons (no more do a 25 man raid for a chance of a loot, then a chance for a good roll, then a chance for a ninja) and above all, my most dreaded thing that existed in wow; grind and armor disparity.

Do not listen to all those who keep saying the new gear is a gear grind and vertical progress, they still do not know what it is to enter blood gulch and have an enemy with armor nearly 4 times as strong as yours……

Anwyays, here are my tips and things to check out while you are still new and get experienced;

-Try to level up doing map completition, personal story and WvW at the same time. You will get to lvl 80 in no time. Level progression is linear, aka; it takes the same amount of exp from lvl 32 to lvl 33, than from lvl 74 to lvl 75.

-Events are fun, playing with people is fun. No more KS, no more mat stealing. You see someone? Help him. You see a node somewhere? Get it. You see a bunch of people gathering up to kill a boss (champion), stay and kill it!

-Roll Sylvari (+5 points to you for coolness if you do)

- Dont get emotionally attached to characters in personal story, specially if you roll into the Whisper Order!!!!<—- Do NOT read until you reach lvl 80!

-Check fractals, IMHO, one of the best dungeon implementations up to this day. Make sure you gear up before then

- Forums arent very friendly inmany aspects, but the forum isnt a good representation of the game, most people come here to make negative remakrs and foget to put the good ones (Im guilty of this myself, sadly)

-Lastly and most important thing: Get into a guild, make friends, try to find one guild that has TS, and has a lot of people, it will increase the game’s fun by factor of 1000x

Enjoy the game and start working on a long term goal, Legendaries is a god start.

Do you like Farmville? If yes, pass go and collect laurels.

If the answer is no. . . well enjoy the ride that never ends!

Hello, and welcome to the game!

I am a resident of Tarnished Coast, the unofficial RP server. It’s well-populated (I see people around all the time, even in midlevel zones) and has a lot of nice people. If you’re in the NA timezone, feel free to check us out. You are not required to RP- just respect RPers and be a nice person overall.

At the risk of tooting my own horn, here’s a thread of resources and advice I put together for new players. If nothing else, I recommend you read GW2 Combat 101, seeing as you’ve come from WoW. The combat in GW2 is significantly different, and that guide explains the differences extremely well.

If you have any questions, you’re always free to contact me in-game.

You may know this already, but if not it’s the thing most likely to catch you out, especially coming from WoW.

The ‘quest’ structure in this game is very, very different to WoW and really most other RPGs. It’s important to know this right from the start or you’ll struggle to level up or really do anything.

There are 3 kinds of activities which replace quests in this game:
1) Personal Story

  • Personal story quests are shown in green in the list of activities on the top right of the screen and use green star shaped map markers. They also have their own tab on the Hero panel which will summarise the story so far and remind you what you need to do next.
  • They’re fairly standard story quests, all of them (except the introduction and the very last part) are instanced and intended for 1 person to do alone but you can bring a group if you want to.
  • You won’t be able to level purely by doing your story, but it can help give you an idea of where to go next.

2) Renown Hearts (aka Heart Quests)

  • These use yellow heart shaped markers both on the map and on the list in the top right corner of the screen. The icon is hollow at first and then filled when you’ve completed it.
  • They are the most similar to traditional MMO side-quests. An NPC will ask you to do things like kill enemies in the local area, gather objects or help with other tasks nearby.
  • Unlike traditional quests you don’t have to speak to the NPC to start them (although if you do you can get some more insight into why these things need doing and a bit of info on the area you’re in) or to get your reward after you’ve finished (it’s mailed to you) and you can do whichever of the activities you want in any order you want.
  • Once you’ve finished the heart quest the NPC becomes a karma vendor who will sell you useful items.
  • In lower level areas there are a lot of heart quests, but they’re intended to ease new players into the way GW2 works so they get much rarer later on, level 80 areas have none. Instead they have…

3) Dynamic Events

  • These show up in orange on the map and on the list in the top-right corner.
  • Like the other two the actual activities will be familiar from quests in other games. ‘Kill these guys’, ‘defend this’, ‘collect 10 rats’ etc.
  • Unlike regular quests dynamic events will start, continue and finish regardless of whether you or anyone else is around to help. If someone says they need your help because centaurs are attacking their town it means it’s happening right now and if someone doesn’t help the centaurs will take over and/or destroy the town.
  • You can drop in and drop out of an event at any time and you’ll be rewarded for your participation automatically as long as you’re on the map when it ends. So if you find out that’s half-way through you can join in, you can join in right away, no need to wait for it to restart, and if you don’t want to see it through to the end you can leave at any time.
  • You’ll want to get into the habit of doing them whenever you see them because they’re one of the best sources of money (including karma), experience and loot in the game, especially at lower levels.
  • When one ends stick around and listen to the NPCs, it will give you some more of the story but also quite often events chain together – when one ends another related one will start up soon after.

On a related note don’t worry about getting in anyone’s way or messing up what they were doing in PvE. There is no tagging or kill-stealing or anything like that in this game. When an enemy dies everyone who damaged it gets their own XP and loot and they get the same amount regardless of if they did it alone or with other people. So if you see other people doing an event or a heart or whatever there’s no need to wait until they’re finished or make sure you target different enemies, just jump in and help.

It’s the same with gathering crafting materials too. When you’ve mined a chunk of ore or cut down a tree or harvested a plant it will be ‘gone’ for you (until it respawns) but everyone else has their own copy so they’re still able to harvest it. And likewise if someone else beats you there it doesn’t matter, you can still gather it after they’ve gone, or even at the same time, and get the rewards as if no one else was around.
