I’m trying to get down to the details on the mechanics of lowering incoming dps through dodging (PvE).

After playing for several months, I’ve picked up on the obvious stuff, but I’m starting to wonder what I’m missing.

Is there more to dodging than just looking for visual cues and managing your energy so you can roll one way or the other?
Does moving and positioning yourself behind your target actually help, or do you have to “dodge” into that position?

The reason I ask is that I’ve noticed that there seems to be a sort of attack-aggro that happens. For example, a Centaur shoots an arrow at you. If you’ve evaded/rolled to the side, the arrow misses, but if you simply run to the side, the arrow tracks and hits you.
Does this decrease the damage though? Is there a benefit to staying in motion constantly?

I’ve noticed that some range attacks are “homing”. You can’t just move out of the path of an arrow or a boulder thrown at you, but you have to dodge away to avoid it. Other attacks aren’t “homing”. A bolt of ice tossed at you from an ice elemental or a bolt from a ballista can be avoided just by moving.
I tend to focus on dodging out of the red ring of AoE attacks unless I’m doing dailies.
Don’t overlook weapon skills that allow you to dodge also.

There are many attacks that aimed at you directly, and others that have “ground” aim. You can walk away from these, but aimed attacks you should dodge to evade.
As for damage reduction while moving, there isn’t any confirm about it.

Evading (dodging) won’t reduce incoming damage so much as negate it entirely. Anytime an attack hits you and you get the “Evaded” message (or “Block”), the attack has no effect on you. No damage, no conditions, no debuffs. Also, no bouncing or AOE blast, for the skills that normally do that on hit.

Some projectiles track, some do not. Non-tracking projectiles can be ‘dodged’ just by strafing away. Tracking projectiles, or fast projectiles, you will need to avoid by other means. In some cases you can throw off the projectile’s aim by rapidly strafing left and right, so you’re not moving more than ~50 range in either direction before reversing, but the projectile predicts that you’ll be moving much farther in one direction, thus missing (without any “Miss” message).

Things like arrows, gunshots, mesmer projectiles will generally need to be evaded. Fire and ice elemental projectiles generally can be strafe-gamed. Otherwise, you’ll need to figure out how other projectiles behave and which method of avoidance is best. Save your dodges for attacks that either track or land too quickly to move away from. And don’t neglect to use other methods of attack avoidance (blocks, blinds, CCs, line of sight/environmental obstacles).
