Game More Expensive Than Sub. MMO?
umm dont buy any gems?
They have to make money somehow. You’re also buying things that you don’t “need.”
—Fort Aspenwood—
The bag and bank slots certainly aren’t required at all. – Especially if you use the collectibles tab. And you have 5 Character slots, granted it’s understandable if you wish to make all professions. – But essentially, gems are for vanity and they’re completely optional. – I’d be thankful that they don’t force you to pay for upgrades with some type of scheme along the lines of; “The best gear is bought with Gems.” – Now -that- would be something to flip over.
Did you really think f2p models benefitted the consumer? Besides, atleast you can obtain everything with in game currency
I have not spent one single dime on this game outside of the 60 bucks to buy the game. I have a level 80 char and a level 26 alt and have never needed to buy a gem. If I want to buy gems, I can easily do so using in game silver. I really dunno why any person would need more than 5 characters, and I also dont know why you would need more bag/bank space when you have free crafting material storage up to 450 per material that you can bank from anywhere at any time.
Also, you are trying to buy all the one time stuff that is of course going to be the most expensive because it unlocks it forever. If you spend 15 bucks a month on gems to buy this stuff, you would have everything within 6 months.
At least this isnt Allods, where in order to get gear endgame you have to spend hundreds of dollars on “chance to upgrade” items just to stay relevant.

I completely understand they need to money but would pricing gem at $10 for 100gems make them more money? Probably not but if they lower the price, more people will buy.
Also “things you don’t need”. C’mon bro, all these things are basic to MMO and completely unrestricted in other MMO. That’s like saying the only thing you need is water, food, and shelter and it’s okay to take away other things beacuse you don’t “need” them.

It’s nothing like that. I think you’re missing the point here. NOBODY is forcing you to pay for anything. You can even buy gems with in-game currency, so what are you complaining about? That you can’t control your spending habits?
you’re able to spend ingame gold on gems… don’t complain that you’re spending real money when there’s an alternative option
I generally spend a lot more money on f2p games than sub based games. But that is because I have a vanity weakness and a huge bank account.
In relation to GW 2 I haven’t bought a single thing that I need to actually progress in the game. It is my choice to do so and not something I am forced to do by Arena Net.
Creating and running an mmo cost money and those money got to come from someplace. In GW2 they come from game sales and micro transactions. Take it or leave it, the choice is yours.
Anet even said, you dont have to spend a single penny on the game (other than buying it to play of course) you can obtain everything in the game for free by trading gold for gems, and also you get some of them as rewards for doing dailies, monthlys and personal story. So if people want to spend their rlm on the game, they can, but dont come on here complaining about it. It was your decision to do so. Also, the money people spend in the game, it helps fund the people keeping the game running and fixes bugs and what not. Plus it is going to help fund the expansion packs in the future as well.

Furthermore, as of right now, I can buy a inventory slot for 1 gold. PLEASE don’t tell us that’s difficult for you to get.

You also seems to miss my point. If I placed you in an f2p MMO, you will be restricted and will not fully enjoy what the game has to offer unless you pay but nobody is forcing you to pay. That’s a pretty lame argument.
" you don’t have to buy a computer, cellphone, console, cloths etc beacuse you don’t need them and nobody is forcing you buy them"

You need 1g + some silvers. That’s a lot for the current economy ESP with gold sinks like teleport, repair, trait books, siege weps, etc
That’s not to say it’s a lot to me, but it’s certainly a lot to most people.
Also, never once did I say I BOUGHT ANY gem, I merely state I spent $50 worth of gem. Those gem have to come from somewhere and I felt bad for the buyers beacuse it’s too cheap.
So bag, bank, and character slot unlocks are all necessary to enjoy this game? Give me a break. Go farm up some gold, transfer it to gems, and buy them that way. It costs $0 dollars, and like EVERYTHING else in the game is meant to be earned (or bought)…not given.
You can do like I do, I bought roughly a monthly subscription’s worth of gems and so far have bought an additional bank tab + bag slot. When next month rolls around I’ll buy another monthly subscriptions worth and upgrade some more. Before long I’ll be maxed out and I’ll be looking for anet to have custom dances installed! =D

That is NOT F2P that is FREEMIUM. A F2P game has 100% free content with a shop for bonus items and vaniety items…Freemium games lock conten that is only available if you pay for it.
Your entire argument is invalid because you do NOT need to pay for items in this game because you can buy gems with in game money you get just by PLAYING. So, instead of dropping money to get gems NOW for things NOW, play the game, get them in a few days…lol…ROFLMAO@YOU!
I have yet to buy anything other than the game and am having quite the fun with it. Anyone who feels the NEED to buy outside crap when you can get it in game is just being silly. You don’t need the extras to play the game, that’s just the greed getting the better of you.
Expensive?? Are you sure??
59.99$ (in my case is 79.99$) is may look expensive if we count in one shot…..but if we just count that is air-time cost for half year……it’s 10$ per month….that still look expensive to you??
Unless you plan to stop play this game before reach half year. :P
Some F2P game….they cost our money more than 10$ per month.
that is all unlocked and unrestricted in a sub MMO.
Nope.
Those also have restrictions (like WoW with a total of 8 characters iirc), or those bank guilds showing space is just too scarce while they charge you monthly for not providing anything. Plus you really don’t need any extra space, get some proper bags and don’t collect crap you won’t ever need.

Yes $10/month over a course of 8 months excluding the cost of gems is indeed expensive. Esp since this game lacks endgame content that revolves around gear, something worthwhile to work towards, the majority of players will not play any further once they reach lvl 80, so about 2months time.
You can buy gems through in-game gold, and you aren’t forced or required to buy gems anyway. You decided to buy gems with real money on your own, that doesn’t make the game expensive per sé.

I didn’t buy gems.
IF you just played the game for a few months you would have more than enough gold to exchange for gems to get all the stuff you cited for free…. L2P

I’m in the same boat, haven’t spent one single dime yet (Though I do plan to) and I’m coming along just fine. The limited bank space sucks, but that’s why I have an alt with bags.
IF you just played the game for a few months you would have more than enough gold to exchange for gems to get all the stuff you cited for free…. L2P
Idk what you doing to make gold but it certainly didnt take me months to get myself $50 worth of gems(reading comphrension). I can log on right now and get myself 4000 more gems with gold and I would still have loads of gold.
I’m saying for the people who’s buying gem, they are not getting their moneys worth and areanet is seriously overpricing both the cost of gems and the price of items.
Um, no,
IF they bought them, they know HOW MANY they are getting,
AND they know WHAT THEY CAN BUY…..
THEY spent the $,
so they DO know what they are getting, or not. Stupid is as stupid does?
WANT the gem prices to come down? Stop spending $ for them, aNet will catch on quick and lower the price or give more gems…

And Skyrim costs $60 and isn’t even an MMO tied to servers and people pay that without even a hope of “end game raiding” because it’s the sort of game that appeals to them.
If you don’t like the kind of game, don’t spend money on it. Not all games that can be classed as “MMOs” have to offer the same kind of content, do the same things, and appeal to the same kind of people.
I feel that “gear progression” is worth much less than what GW2 offers. Gear progression is the illusion of content – it’s about as deep as Farmville.
Make a daily payment with some silver you make while leveling to convert to gem and you’ll eventually have your character slot and bank expansion without spending a single $. Most games I have played costed $50-60 in the past decade, most expensive one was Return to Castle Wolfenstein which was $80 (standard edition, mind you) back in 2001.

Your comparing apples to orange. Skyrim is an RPG game, whereas gw2 is a MMORPG. They are different, I do not expect to play online on a single player fps do I?
Gear progression worth less? Do you have any idea why they are so sucessful and ironed hard into people’s mind as the correct progression path? Everyone can agree that gear A is better than gear B base on stats and is worth working towards but you cant say gear A is better than gear B beacuse it looks better even in the comestic sense simply beacuse everyone has a different artistic view, so that gear you worked so hard for may be seen as ugly in someone else’s opinion.
Why is this game so expensive?
I spent $50 worth of gems and I don’t even have enough to unlock all bag and bank slot… Let alone the character expansions, etc that is all unlocked and unrestricted in a sub MMO.
Like are you serious? The pricing of gem looks more like a highway robbery…
Why would you buy gems?
Honestly, this game is not a long term game. There is nothing to do in PvE when you are level 80, and if you make an alt, be prepared to spend more on bags all over again =P
Just gotta wonder, how long ya plan to play GW2.
If it’s just a short time, $50 of gems maybe wasn’t a great use of your money. Cuz you could have a night out, instead. Or bought a console game.
Getting gems with in-game gold, right now, is stupid good deal. Yesterday it was just a couple gold for a character slot. If RL $$ is scarce for you, buy it with in-game.

How can you possibly say that 2 bag slot on ONE character or 1 character slot expansion is worth $10 when it is something that is so basic that it is offered free in most quality MMO? Unless you are too rich, irresponsible, or even spoiled.
Oh and this is coming from a person who is trading gold to gems and never bought any gem and is willing to trade at a higher convertion rate beacuse gem is simply too expensive to be getting so little of.

Cost of gems is extra….personally….I not count it in.
And to think about after 8 month…I no need to pay anything anymore(unless I need to buy something extra)…..for me this is not expensive.
Personally…..If i want to judge some game that they expensive or not?? I will count the cost i buy the game and then divide that with time i plan&can play the game.
I a type who like PVE…..I perfer lazy walk around explore everything…..and i plan to get all craft skill with one main character…..just this project it took me…maybe 3-4 month (or more) to make it happen.(because i didn’t play only GW2 :P )……and this is not count other 4 free character slot.
So…..personally…..i think i will play GW2 more than 1 year for sure…..and it mean it cost me 6.6$ per month. :P
Let me say again…..personally…..with this rate….this game is far more than “expensive”.

And I was pointing out that comparing GW2 to other MMOs is also apples to oranges – especially when those games may be barely “RPG” whereas GW2 is heavy on it. I feel GW2’s PvE is much better compared to a traditional RPG than an “MMO”. Many people have been wanting this. It will not appeal to all people, but that’s not the point – other MMOs don’t appeal to all people, either. GW2 is betting on this market – if you’re not part of it, that’s fine.
Yes, I do know why – people like to feel rewarded, so games have built in ways to make you feel rewarded to hook you in order to keep you playing and paying. It’s a psychological tactic on their part to extend the re-playablity of content – “adding content” without adding anything. I don’t think this is necessarily evil or wrong, and GW2 even does this to an extent (to get certain armours, you’ll need to do the dungeons multiple times). But, no, I don’t think it needs to be arbitrarily included in every game ever just because it might be an “MMO”. Games can be different games – that’s a good thing.
Many of the rewards in GW2 are tuned more to the RPG crowd, not the “progression” crowd. And that’s okay. If you’re the progression crowd – that’s fine – but that’s not what GW2 is offering and they never claimed to. I’m glad that there’s finally an MMO that feels satisfying as an actual RPG, not with “RPG” feeling like it just got slapped on because the game happened to have some words in it.
This really IS a game for people who like games like Skyrim and who are interested in playing a game like that with many other people. MMOs don’t need to be clones of the same model.

First of all, I work hard for my money, and I do with it what I please. It doesn’t make me ‘rich, irresponsible, or spoiled’.
Second of all, how many MMO’s have you played? Let’s take the most popular one atm. Warcraft. In WC you get 10 slots. For bags you get five maximum. You have no other options but to delete characters if you want a new alt, or roll on another server. As for bag space, yeah you’re SoL there. You need to roll a bank toon, or create ‘bank’ guilds.
GW2. You start with what …3…4 bag slots? That’s more than plenty. You also get 5 character slots. No one really needs more than 5 characters, because many players will just let alts rot when they find a new favorite for the month. These items you’re complaining are ‘too costly’ are LUXURY items.
Things that you don’t need, but have the OPTION to pay for if you want them.
Just like in WoW. You want to move servers you pay a fee. Move to the other faction. Fee. Collector’s pets- pay real money on the blizzard store.
You don’t need this stuff. People do buy/pay for it because they want it. Why they do so, is also none of your business.
Your whining is pointless. The prices aren’t that bad. You also have GOLD as a means to buy them. Think of it this way- When you buy an item from GW2, seeing as it’s F2P, you’re donating money to help keep the game maintained. You’re donating money to get more content and new expansions brought in. You’re helping a game that you enjoy.
Now, please and kindly get off your high horse, and find something constructive to complain about.

Everything in GW2 can be purchased with in game money. It is objectively less expensive than subscription MMOs.

Yes, quite.
I’ve filed this thread under First World (Video Games) Problems.
I’ve played many f2p games and this is easily the least manipulative of them all. You are given tons of starting bank space via the crafting storage, and you’re also given more than enough bag tabs and are even allowed to craft bags with the professions.
That’s TONS more freedom than typical f2p games give players. Be glad you don’t get ONE bag and the only place to acquire more is the store. I’ve played games where you get to have one character, and the endgame gear is locked behind store currency… I’ve even played games where you have a meta-resource that runs out as you play and then you’re forced to quit unless you BUY MORE. And don’t get me started on the games that make you buy your characters’ spells in the store… sheesh.
To contrast this, GW2 gives you store items as quest rewards. I’ve used a black lion key on a chest that contained another key, and so on until I opened around 6 chests. That’s not a manipulative f2p game at all.
Also, gold-to-gem trade. Enough said.
