Hello!

I bought GW2 more or less when it was First released, got my mesmer to 80, geared him up with Flame Legion Dungeon gear and then the guild i was in all quit to play another game (they all went and bought Wildstar – great choice o.O) and i was alone so it wasn’t as fun anymore and i stopped playing.

Now i recently returned and it’s fun again, i found a nice guild, but i’m kinda lost.

I only have the core game, and i won’t be able to get either expansion for a while so keep that in mind.

I’d like to continue playing but i feel lost. I need some kind of a goal to do, but i don’t Know what i really want/need on my mesmer. I’d like to get ascended gear or maybe a legendary weapon but i don’t Know where to even start and what i need to do.

I started combining blade shards in the mystic forge for the backpiece, but that’ll be months before i grind enough blade shards and sprockets for the whole recipe, i need something else to do in the meanwhile.

Also, is there a mesmer build that’s good (as in, people won’t hate how useless i am) that’s not Berserker’s? I’m currently using Sword/Focus – Greatsword Berserkers and it’s fine but i really like the staff (especially the back teleport ability – i used to rely on that lol). I’d like to use it more, but it’s not really good with berserker gear.

I have a set of Rabid armor (same defense as my dungeon armor) but if i’m going to be grinding ascendeds or maybe a legendary i’ll need to choose.

Right now i’m doing world completion and dailys. After that i don’t Know what to focus on or where to go. So if you can, please point me in a direction so i can have some kind of a plan. Again. No HoT or PoF for a while, i gotta save up Money for college First.

Well, with core alone you can focus on fractals, if thats your thing.
there’s 100 fractal levels, and the last 3 have a challenge mode for extra rewards.

Yeah, i’ve been meaning to get into fractals, but i have no idea what to do there, and people tend to get mad if you mess up their fractals so i’m scared. :P

Couple of options here. You can ask your guild for help, start your own LFG stating you’re new/asking for help or if you’re on EU servers then nudge me and I’ll grab a few of our guildies to go through with you.

I am currently only aware of two Challenge Motes in fractals, level 99 and 100. Which one would be the third?

For Legendary weapons, you’ll need a Gift of Battle, so you can always do some WvW to work on that. Make sure to set it as your reward track.

Typically when I’m working on multiple long term projects, and spend a little bit of time on each aspect, depending on how I feel for the day. Being that you have just a core account atm, Silverwastes would be a good place to earn some gold, and can be really fun.

WvW is another option i forgot about completely lol. I remember going there a few times and i had fun a bit, but i don’t really Know what you get out of it. I Know you can get discounted ascended trinkets for WvW cash and laurels there. Other than that idk…

I googled Silverwastes now, i haven’t explored that part yet, it’s in Maguma and i left that for last lol. I’ll check it out, thanks. And i’ll ask my guild too.

As fro fractals, yeah, i’ll start my own LFG and specifically say i’m new, that’s a good idea. Then i have an excuse for being bad.

What do you mean “set it as reward track”?

I like Silverwastes especially when joining chest farms. You can check LFG if there’s an active squad that does that.

The Silverwastes are fun, and learning Fractals is also a good goal to aim for.

As for alternatives to Zerk gear, Sinister may come in handy for Mesmers, and Dire would be nice for a roaming Condi Mesmer.

You could also begin leveling another class for giggles.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!

So far, i’ve been focusing on world completion. 99% complete, i only need to do Orr and i’m done.

I’ve been to Silverwastes, i’m definitely going to spend some time there, and i decided on learning fractals and doing those. In the meantime i’ll save up for the expansion bundle so i can then go do more stuff.

And i’ll probably do more WvW, i don’t Know why i don’t do it as much, i had fun last few times i was there….

Oh well, at least now i have some sort of a plan and i don’t feel so lost.

Hi there. If you don’t mind, I’ll approach your question in few parts.

First off, congratulations on having a goal in this game. Unlike “gear treadmills” like Wildstar, the “progression” in Guild Wars 2 is a little more freeform in that you have to decide on a personal goal (e.g. getting full ascended gear, crafting a legendary weapon, collecting every cat, getting the Dungeoneer achievement, etc.), each with its own steps for progression. However, due to the variety of materials and currencies involved in crafting ascended equipment, and especially for legendary weapons, it can be easy to lose track of where you are, and eventually feel lost. I personally found GW2Efficiency to be an amazing tool to track my progression through major crafting projects. The site not only lists the full material requirements needed, but also keeps track of the materials I still need for completion, presenting it very neatly as a (giant) gold value. So at the end of every play session, I would just load the site up and watch with satisfaction as the “gold required to craft” get chipped, and chipped, and chipped away.

In your case, the site can also track the overall progress for multiple items, too. This example link shows the combined cost and materials required for a six-piece armor set of ascended Sinister light armor. While this may seem like a terrifying overview of the entire project, it also allows you to pick and choose at individual components to work on at a given time.

Next, I’d like to address one of your worries, i.e.

I have a set of Rabid armor (same defense as my dungeon armor) but if i’m going to be grinding ascendeds or maybe a legendary i’ll need to choose.

Well, you needn’t, really. First and foremost, all Legendary equipment allows the player to change their attribute combination at any time, without cost. As for ascended equipment, you can swap attribute combinations rather cheaply using the Anthology of Heroes.

Then, in regards to a Condition Damage-based Mesmer, here is a modified build from the one I use, having to forego Viper for Sinister attributes. There is a blank Utility Skill slot, and Elite Skill slot that can be swapped as needed.

When fighting multiple enemies,

  1. I’d approach them,
  2. summon a Phantasmal Mage,
  3. go invisible with The Prestige,
  4. activate Signet of the Ether to reset the cooldown of Phantasmal Mage, as well as
  5. cast a Lesser Chaos Storm through the Descent into Madness trait,
  6. summon another Phantasmal Mage, and
  7. weapon swap to proc my Superior Sigil of Geomancy.

This results in 10 stacks of Burning, 2 stacks of Confusion, 3 stacks of Bleeding, Blindness, and some extra conditions from the Lesser Chaos Storm.

And since you have a preference for the Staff, feel free to swap out the Scepter/Pistol combination for that. The idea, however, is to maintain as many Phantasms as possible to augment your damage.

Alright, that was a lengthy post, so I’ll stop here. Hope it was of some help and have fun on your journey!

Thank you very much for your detailed insight!
I will try the site you linked, looks very useful!

And as for the mesmer, i used something simmilar back in the day, but now they kinda changed some skills and stuff so what i used isn’t exactly the same anymore. I’ll try your build though, see if i like it, i even have a torch in my bank too.

Although i really would swap to a staff instead of scepter/pistol. That staff phantasm is OP when you cast it after chaos storm. And seeing as how you already cast Chaos storm on your own with Descent into Madness, whatever target the staff phantasm attacks is going to have tons of conditions amplifying its damage.

I used staff phantasms for bosses because they usually have hundreds of conditions on them. And the staff phantasm deals huge damage then. Combine them with traits that make them attack more often and a signet that makes them have more HP and you can just leave them while you apply conditions.

It was very effective, but sadly, some people just don’t want to play with you unless you have a zerker build, not that there’s anything wrong with that, the build i have now is ok too, it’s just a different playstyle.

Also, i decided on a long term project to get my tempered spinal blades. This is mindless grind i can do while doing other stuff. 1000 blade shards will take a long time.

I did some WvW, and i understand the reward track now. That wasn’t there before so i was confused.

And i wasn’t aware you can change ascended stats. I knew about the legendary but didn’t Know about ascended. If that’s the case then i don’t have to worry at all! That’s great News! Then i can just start gathering funds and Materials for whatever i want and just change them later if i want another build. Nice!

Still, in case of legendary, i still need to choose a build, i can’t use a staff with my current build so i’d create a greatsword, but if i decide to go condition build later that greatsword will be useless… So it’s great that you can change stuff on your legendary, but you still need to choose, legendaries aren’t cheap.

I’m not sure if you have claimed them or if they are still available to you if you haven’t, but there were two free Season 1 Memory Boxes in the Gem Store, whereby each will give varying numbers of Black Lion Commemorative Sprockets. The Sprockets can be used to buy key components of the Spinal Backpiece, like the Gift of Blades, and Blade Shards.

I’ll have to check up on that, i have no ide if i did or not.
I have a sprocket node in my home instance so sooner or later i’ll have the backpiece. :P
