I’m standing here for 10 minutes straight watching this person ( who’s name ive removed in the shot ) in Fields of Ruin – SniperWoods and this ranger is not moving, not using skills standing strategically placed next too one mob, just far away so that it doesn’t attack him and letting his pet keep killing it over and over and over.I know this isnt really botting but, tell me this isn;t allowed right ? Letting your char stand overnight next to a mob letting your pet kill it..Imo is botting. So i don’t know if i should report this person or not..

Btw i just noticed this pet was getting attack by 3 mobs, and it just killed them all easily.

Both are against the ToS /EULA , being dumb and sitting at the keyboard and sending pet in over and over is a waste of time, this person will burn out quickly if they are not botting.

Not technically botting as there is no outside program…just mob camping. Prob has his pet max specc’d and is letting it kill over and over as it levels his/her toon while they go do something else. Seen this behavior numerous times in other games.

I don’t know what Arena Net’s rules are on this. But I don’t care for it either.

If the person is not at the keyboard, then yes, I believe it may be construed as botting.

I think the finally got banned, but on my first server there was a group of about 8-10 rangers that sat on a bridge where a world event regularly occurred. The didn’t move, they just continually fired some AoE shot in one direction continually, I think it was AoE, I don’t play a ranger so I am not familiar with their skills. They would never move, even after the event was over they all just sat there shooting in the same direction, and they were there at least every time I was on.

Myself and a couple others reported for botting, and after ANet’s last reported botting purge I never saw those rangers again.

Just to play devils advocate here, but if he isn’t using a 3rd party program and is just standing there letting his pet do all the work, what’s the issue? How is he breaking the rules (if he even is). He paid for the game, so if he wants to level by letting his pet kill boars for 6 months, let him.

Standing where your pet aggros a spawn certainly does not require a bot.

Standing with skills on autofire does not require a bot — Just a control right-click with a standard mouse.

There are bots for the game, but they don’t look anything like the behaviors described here — they’ll move around, navigate the zone, pick up loot, and look more like a person playing than a person afk.

This is not botting, BUT it can be considered “exploiting” a game mechanic to cause unintended benefit/advantage to a player.

I know the person isnt a bot,but the thing she was doing is considered botting. She was not behind her keyboard, yet place her char + pet near mobs to kill them so she gain ex without being behind the pc.Ok,if then can i have a pet that kill things aswell while im at work to gain some xp ?

Btw i forgot to add, that she did pick things up,probably stuck something between her keyboard on the pickup button.

I’ve seen this happen at Waypoints. An obvious AFK ranger standing right where they ported in being defended by their pet. Problem is, how do you make the call between going AFK and exploiting. Maybe he was nearby and walked over to press “F” once in a while. He could have been listening to the game sounds to make sure he could respond if he was suddenly in danger. I know I’ve done similar in EVE while mining. Clean up and do some stuff while the computer runs and I’ll hear a warning if I start getting attacked.

“Sir! We’re surrounded!”

“Excellent! Now we can attack in any direction!”

A Bot is a program that automates something that normally requires player interaction.

If this person is just AFK then it could be considered an exploit. And exploit is when somebody takes advantage of a game mechanic in a way the developer did not intend. Did Anet intend for players to be able to earn XP by standing in the exact same spot for hours while a pet does all the killing? i doubt it.

Since GW2 levels you down for PvE and up for PvP, the player isn’t getting loot or resources, just XP— the only benefit for leveling like this… would be a crafting Alt. If this becomes popular it’ll be addressed, I’m sure.

I’d call it AFK exploiting, since the person probably went AFK there knowing he would gain exp/loot (albeit not much) for free whilst he was doing something else.

Agreed. What’s the point in playing the game if you’re not actually going to play the game?

It’s not botting and possibly someone fell asleep at the keyboard. I used to be a GM for another MMO and this would not have been actionable BUT that MMO also auto kicked idle players after awhile. So, could it be exploiting? Sure, in a minor sense.

However, when in doubt, report it. Let the GMs decide. >;+)

They have logs and such. No company bans players without legitimate evidence.

Actually, I have a seriously related question concerning Turrets and AFK. As an engineer, I can set up my turrets in more than one place in Cursed Shore to tag enemies during events while I alt-tab and do other things on my second monitor. I’ve debated leaving my character on auto-run facing a wall to farm event gold and karma at nights….But I refrain for fear of a Blizzard-esque banhammering.

Its not like I get loot doing this either, since im not there to click corpses, just EXP for skill points, karma, and a little silver. Cursed Shore has events that run on 20-30 min timers, and are great for at-keyboard farming; however, the urge to AFK exists – would I be banned?

Just a suggestion but you could kindly aggro a few mobs and kite them in their direction allowing them to aggro said player and their pet. That may alleviate the problem for that night anyways:)

Like others have said though, I’m sure if this becomes an issue ANet with deal with it accordingly. From what I have seen so far they have been extremely good at banning people who deserve to be banned.

Just a side note I also play a ranger and would find this to be any extreme waste of time as I have a blast controlling my pets and switching pets based on the situation or ability needed. People like this give rangers a bad name.

If the person is using a script to do this and not at his PC, then its botting. But how can you tell if someone is at there pc?

What botters are doing noe is a flash tele. I reported 5 people doing this in Orr. It’s obvious there botting. The classes they were playing don’t have that kind of ability. I hope Anet starts rolling out the BAN wagon on the botters soon.

The word exploit like it’s a bad thing in reality it’s not.
Exploit:
1. Make full use of and derive benefit from (a resource)
2. Use (a situation or person) in an unfair or selfish way
3. Benefit unfairly from the work of (someone), typically by overworking or underpaying them
The people who do that are exploiting the ability to max their pet out and afk kill stuff. I’m sure it’s intended because they have aggressive/passive and defensive stances for the pet.

I dont think that fits the term people commonly associate with ‘exploit’. Usually when people say exploit in gaming terms its because they are using a normal game mechanic in a way not intended by developers. The IRL definition of exploit may mean ‘to take advantage of’ something, but we are talking about it in the context of gaming. We need to be able to tell the difference between legit use of the game, exploiting the game mechanics and botting. Normal use is just normal use, it doesnt have to be called ‘exploit, but intended’ vs ‘exploit, but not intended’.

You can exploit a game mechanic and not be a bot. You can be a bot but still not be exploiting a game mechanic. And it is up to the developer to determine if something a player does is considered an exploit or normal use of game mechanics. We need to know the difference between all this because the fix for each one is different. You fix an exploit by changing game mechanics so that people wont be able to do it anymore. You fix exploits usually by banning people, blocking them with programs like punkbuster, or you make it harder for people to use bot software in the actual program/game.
