Hi guys, I am currently downloading GW2 launcher. I heard GW2 is a fantastic game but was unable to play it as I had yet to achieve certain goals in the other games I had been playing. Recently I have achieved those goals and decided to play GW2.

I have no knowledge about the game and would like to find more information on what new players should do. Also I would like to pick a versatile class for both PVE and PVP/WVW. Would a Norn/Ranger be a good starting character?

I have heard there is no mindless grinding involved and the world is amazing. I simply can’t wait to play the game and try to reach my toon’s maximum capability. Wish me luck.

Regards,
Tzar

Also, is there a hardcore mode where death is permanent?

As far as I’m aware there is no “hardcore mode” where did you get that idea?

Warrior is a decent starting class from what a lot of other players say I personally started with a warrior and enjoyed every second of it however if you fancy a Ranger then go for it

About the grinding I suppose the only major grinding you would need to do would be if you wanted a legendary.

The last 3 sticky threads at the top of this forum is full of links, knowledge and wisdom for new players.

There is no “hardcore”. This isn’t that kind of MMO.

Biggest difference with this MMO over others is that in PvE areas, helping somebody doesn’t hurt them. No tagging of critters or sharing of XP and loot. Just about every activity under the sun will give you XP. Material nodes in the wilderness are spawned for each player, no rushing to get it first. Everyone can rez a fellow player or NPC, which you will get XP for. The game is very, very co-op in PvE.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

RIP City of Heroes

Thank you Wrath. I have always liked ranger classes so I think I’ll try it out Ah, I see. I’ve been accustomed to playing hardcore gaming modes as they keep me at the edge of my seat, was just wondering if GW2 had this option.

@Behellagh Thank you for the information. That is pretty great that there is no need to do a mad rush to get items or mats. Looks like I have a lot to learn. I shall readup the stickied threads that you have mentioned. Thanks again.

No hardcore mode.
As you allready can see, warrior is what most people scream when it comes to best class.
Bullocks I say to that.

Warrior is the most OP class at the moment, but it is far from versatile. In my opinion it is so easy it is even boring.

Same goes btw for Ranger. With the top side that ranger is not really good in WvW.
Both classes are a kill them quick and easy classes and move on, that is not what I call versatile.

To me versatile classes are:
Elementalist – very weak, low armor, low health class. It really demands of you to learn to play the game (dodge). You get through attunements 4 different sets of skills wich you can toggle through. These are somewhat themed to make it more fun.
- fire: DPS+burning
- Earth: DPS+armor-buffs+cripples
- Water: Healing and CC
- Air: CC+swiftness
This makes it a very versatile class, but not easy to master

Engineer: The engineer are considered the special opps, they can fullfill almost every aspect of the game. This is done through kits (they replace weaponskills). There are grenade kits, a flamethrower, a medkit, etc. The downside is that they are good at everything, but never outstanding.

Thief: The thief is good at PvE and awesome in WvW. The thief uses ranged weapons or melee weapons. They are pretty squishy, but can strike hard. Using stealth they can hide themselfes from enemy’s. This means that you can strike hard, hide for skillrecharge and strike again.

What works in PvE/WvW often doesn’t work in PvP, but for PvP you don’t need a full level character. In PvP you get bugged to max level with all stats and traits and you got access to all armor and gear types (though only in PvP).

This means you can make a character, go to the PvP area and have the same excellent stats as a 1,5 year veteran (though the vet prolly slays you anyways cause he is much more experienced). This does mean that this is also an excellent way of testing out classes, weapons, attunements. skills and stats. Besides pvp-arena’s, the heart of the mists (staging area) has several pve training objects like npc with a specific quality to test yourself.

Welcome to the game!

Tzar, in a way you can play as if there was a hardcore mode. Each zone has a different difficulty level (ex. 1-15, 15-25, etc.). Your level 1 character will start out in a level 1-15 zone but can venture into any zone even into a level 80 zone. Your character will adapt to its highest level allowed for the zone so if your character is level 10 and you go into a level 80 zone, your character can only be level 10. So in a sense you will be in “hardcore mode”. In fact, I do this to explore the maps and to at least uncover all the waypoints.

Thank you for the write up Mercury Ranique. Elementalists sound like they are really fun to play with! But it also sounds as if I need to have some experience before using them. Thief sounds pretty neat, maybe I will go that route. Thank you for the info on pvp as well, this way I can learn about different skills and builds.

@Phaser Banks thank you for the reply. Yes I think it is a good idea for me to explore the many different maps and collect stuff along the way.

Also is there a hostile button in pve dungeons? Do I have to worry about people attacking me while in a PVE dungeon? I’ve seen some gameplay footage where people were fighting each other in a dungeon and there was a boss there as well. Not too sure if I am describing it correctly, but that is what it looked like.

You will start the game with 5 empty character slots … I would suggest you roll five characters and see what you like (take each to at least level 20, 30 is better) and narrow down from there. You won’t earn/loot anything that you’ll miss on a level 30 character, so if it turns out you don’t like any of them (unlikely) then you can delete and reroll.

Warrior is probably the most versatile – since by versatile it means you can adapt to most situations. It isn’t, however, necessarily the most interesting class to play. It has a low skill-floor (high skill-ceiling if you watch some of the very best) and so is easy to just pick up and do well on from the beginning. Ranger is similar in this regard.

Other classes, Thief, Elementalist, Engineer in particular, require more attention when being played. They are without a doubt more complicated, but more interesting, I would say. For some, this constant attention is a turn off, for others, clearly, it’s a huge attraction.

Necro, Mesmer and Guardian, I would say hover somewhere in the middle (Necro is my personal favourite).

But give them all a go – and roll one of each of the races as well so you can check out their different personal stories, starting areas (though you can visit any starting area on any character) and class features (like Norns and Charrs being absolutely HUGE).

Most of all – enjoy your time! Welcome to GW2.

Nowhere in the open world PvE (including dungeons) is open for attacks from other players. WvW is another game mode (considered PvE by the devs for balancing purposes, but you have to actually leave the open world to go there so you won’t wander in by mistake), where players do attack other players. But in PvE dungeons you only worry about the mobs.

Dungeons: there is no pvp related content in dungeons at all. All pvp takes place in either PvP-arena’s and World versus World. In world versus world you also have PvE elements. Not sure if among them are champions, but definitly elites and veterans. Some area’s in WvW can look a bit like a dungeon (for example the obsidian sanctum)

Norn/Ranger would be an excellent choice to start with, you will have a pet to assist you (get a bear to tank tough monsters). Norn starting area is IMO the best newbie intro to the world of Tyria.

There is plenty of mindless grinding, but most of it is optional (vanity).

There is no player in-fighting in the PvE world or PvE dungeons. The only places players can kill each other are WvW (like battlegrounds) and Conquest (like arenas). What you may have witnessed was secondary NPC objectives in a PvP setting.

New players should begin by following the quest chains called Renown Hearts. There is typically one or two per level, and can be found by speaking to a Scout or simply exploring the map. As you travel the map, participate in every dynamic event you come across.

The visuals of gw2 are amazing. Open world is very well done, plenty of side quests and areas of interest to keep one sidetracked for a while. Instanced dungeons are fun as well, but most of the time there is a certain trait + gear build people expect you to use.

Every mmo is grindy. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar. That said, there are a couple of different ways to acquire gold in this game to make it seem like it isnt. With 3 completely different game modes, there certainly is enough content to keep one busy for quite a while.

Ranger is in a good place for pvp in heart of the mists, as well as solo roaming in wvw. Not so much in dungeons, although many groups wouldnt mind one if you know what you are doing. Rangers have very little group utility besides immobilize, so zerging will not be your strong point.

My advice to every new player is to do a little research on the forums. Look for different profession builds for the 3 game types and see them in action on youtube. Test pvp builds out yourself to get a feel for how each class is played. You might suprise yourself by trying out a class that was on the bottom of your list.
