Rain Tridesdale.3267

I received the Heroic edition of this game for Christmas, and right off the bat I am feeling over whelmed.

I have beaten the beginner part and now am loose in the main city, however I am unsure about where to go next.

I am used to MMOs at least guiding me in the right direction (talk to this NPC they will give you quests, ect)

However upon reaching the city I see there are multiple quest areas with many quests within them.

I recently killed a giant worm thing in a farm field, but I don’t know how to turn it in.

Combat was also vaguely explained in the tutorial. I get that I use 1-5 to attack and such and that some to higher damage than others, however is there any point in using the lower ones if 3 and 4 do more damage?

I there a newbies guide out there? I come from playing Tera and such.

Sorry if it seams like a rant, I am just very overwhelmed and confused.

Thanks for the help.

One of the first NPCs you should have come across after completing the beginner part is a scout, who points out the nearby heart tasks and such. Those are the closest thing to quests in GW2, but you don’t actually need to pick them up from a quest giver, nor do you need to turn them in at a quest giver when done, for the most part. If you mouse over a heart, you should see a number. If you need a little bit of guidance in where to go, I suggest doing the hearts in numerical order (even though that sounds horribly robotic) and doing any events that happen to pop up in your vicinity while you’re working on the hearts.

When you’re in the neighborhood of a heart task, and you’re actively completing its goals, you’ll likely see a bar in the upper right corner of your screen filling up, either as you kills mobs nearby, gather relevant nodes for turn in or whatever else the heart task may require. When the bar fills, you’ve completed the task. You don’t actually need to talk to the relevant NPC. They do, however, become a merchant who will sell items for karma, which is a form a currency earned in game.

As far as a newbies guide is concerned, if I’m not mistaken, there is a link to the online manual on the game’s launcher. To be honest, I haven’t read it, so I’m not sure how newbie friendly it is, but it couldn’t hurt to check it out.

I can also all but guarantee that there will be a flood of posts offering additional helpful advice forthcoming, so keep checking back here on the forums.

That said, welcome to Guild Wars 2! I hope you enjoy your stay in Tyria.

There are no quests in the traditional sense. What you referred (the giant wurm) was probably an event, which are numerous in each zone. All you have to do for those is kill, gather stuff, escort someone, traditional quest goals in a sense, and when it’s completed, you will automatically be rewarded money, experience, and karma, which is another currency. There are also ‘heart quests’, which show up as hearts on the map (you can go talk to scouts, which are shown as telescopes on the map to find more hearts). These are also similar to events, but they can only be completed once on a character, and when you do, a vendor becomes unlocked (the heart gets filled and they sell stuff after).
As for combat, your 1-5 skills are preset to correspond to certain weapons for each profession: skills 1-3 for your main hand, 4-5 are your offhand, and 1-5 for a two handed weapon. 6-10 are utility skills, with 6 being a dedicated heal skill, 7-9 being profession skills rather than weapon skills, and there also being some racially dependent ones, and 10 is an elite skill, which is ‘a game changer’ in a fight. Sorry for going on a tangent, but back to your question, the reason you want to use all your skills is because of cooldowns and recharge times. Skill 1 is an autoattack; you can change your autoattack to any skill, but skill 1 is usually a chain of 2-3 attacks, and it is the only move you have with no cooldown. Each skill after that (2, then 3, so on) is theoretically stronger than the last, and will usually have a longer recharge time than the previous. I suggest hovering over each of your skills to see the effects and such, as some skills apply crippling, or bleeding, or something, and just getting used to what attacks you’re doing.
There is probably a guide or two on the forums for your specific profession, but you should probably check out the wiki for specific information on what you want to know.

GW2’s quest system is much different than TERA’s. TERA sends you on a linear path, from one quest hub to another. GW2, on the other hand, is about exploration and free roaming. If you see a path that’s interesting, you can follow it north to discover a cave of skritt who need your help defending themselves from marauding ettins. Or you can go south, to the farmers who are fighting off centaurs. Or east, to explore an underwater system of tunnels and fight an undead monster in the deeps. It’s all up to you.

You do not turn in quests in GW2. Once you’re done with the task, you get your reward. However, you can talk to the NPCs to see if they have any interesting items for sale or any new information, and even continue following them to discover new events. I highly recommend giving this a read: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Completely-New-to-GW2/first#post3353537

As for combat, the combat system here is much different than from most MMOs. There are no tanks or healers. Everyone is responsible for keeping themselves alive, damaging the enemy, and using support and control to help keep themselves and others alive. Some skills do less damage, but do additional effects that help you stay alive.

For instance, watch this video of a level 12 elementalist (the class with the lowest base HP and armor) soloing a veteran (harder-than-usual) enemy that’s four levels stronger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubm6k-AX2U8

You will notice that the enemy hits me for over half my health. If I’d stood there and tried to take it, I would have died, even if I had used my heal (on a side note, it’s more important to avoid damage than it is to heal it in GW2). However, I defeated it by cycling my skills. Some of my skills, like the ice blast skill, do not do much damage at all- however, they slow the enemy down, allowing me to avoid being hit, keeping it at arm’s range while I cut away at its health.

I recommend reading https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Combat-System-101-Guide/first
As for a general newbie guide, allow me to toot my own horn and link this: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/New-Player-Outreach-Resources-Events-FAQs/first

Just run around maps uncovering them and doing the heart quests, just avoid the toxic champ farmers in Queensdale. Once you get 80 you can continue your farming and grinding for top tier armor/weapons followed by creating alts to repeat the same old content over and over again. Welcome to Guild Wars 2.

You don’t need to farm and grind in GW2 to get the same rewards.
Just by playing the game and enjoying the content you love is enough to get you places you need to be.

If you Hate yourself, grind away!
It’s the best way to burn yourself out of the game.

The thing that makes GW2 special is, Grinding is optional and not needed.
Exotics is all you need and are easy to obtain, the rest is all about having fun getting the skins you want.

Listen to DreamyAbaddon, he’s a dude to newbies.

I only played Tera briefly (the little kid-like things in short skirts freaked me out), but I also play Rift. GW2 is quite different from these types of MMOs, and as stated you don’t simply pick up quests and move from one to the other.

I’ve been simply exploring the maps, trying to get 100% completion, and finding stuff to do on the way. Gathering, exploring, doing Vistas and those hearts etc, they’re levelling me up pretty quickly.

I also highly recommend looking at the PvP available. It’s really risk free, so you can literally hop in, get your skill bumped up to 80, and you can go wild. I enjoy both the solo PvP arena, and the WorldvWorldvWorld.

This may help you as it helps me; look at the “Daily” achievements, and see what you need to do to get it. They seem to change every day, although some achievements remain constant. completing your Daily and you’re awarded with stuff. This may help.
