Now we have "unique" gear?
Unique gear has been around since the very beginning of the game. Sorry that you didn’t know about it/notice it. However, are AKSs character or account bound? Cause if it’s the later you can always just send it to someone else.

Then why the wiki only list the Ancient Karka shells ?
Can you name any of the unique items that have been here since release ?
This was the first thing on my mind when I woke up this morning. Which is truly sad in itself BUT, this just irks me so…. It’s a huge set back as it was all my gold and resources. I don’t have any other exotic items but armor even. I have no in game resources left to take advantage of the Holiday sales this weekend.
I checked the wiki link and Snoring is right, AKS is the only unique item listed. The page was last modified yesterday. Though I’d love to know when was the creation date of the page.
Besides, in game, it doesn’t mention anything on what “Unique” means. I thought of it in terms of it’s stats. That it’s unique from every other exotic earring. Which it is obviously. The item is not quite Ascended as it cannot have Agony values. But, equivalent to Ascended in range of stats. No where does it say in game that you can only have one of them on your character. At the very least, it could have been like buying Dye’s on the TP. In which a pop-up of red text alerts you that you’ve unlocked this already. Or, simply lock an account from purchasing two of them. Since there’s no reason to have more than one on an account.
If this was just by oversight, Anet should make good and fix this so no one else loses 30+ gold. For me, I can sell to an NPC for a whole 3 silver
you could have just got exotic pieces for an actual advantage instead of wasting money on mediocre karka shell that i can’t imagine anyone will be keeping very long
Applekwisp, believe me when I say, “I know” When I think about what I could have bought instead, I feel the “Urge to Kill Rising!!!!” And, I could have killed a lot more if I bought exotic weapons instead.
It’s a complete waste, a kittening gold sink, a literal shell game that I fell for. We can’t even get rid of them. Either sell to an NPC for 3 silver or destroy it. Which irks me even more. That’s why I’m making sure no one else does this…
Instead of destroying or selling for 3 silver (which I hope you hven’t yet), if you ever get 2 more exotic accessories you don’t want to use that are the same level. I suggest throwing them in the forge with a donation package for 2000 of those medals. At least you’ll be getting something out of it. That’s 7 black lion keys.
I know this may not be the best answer of what to do with it, but its something..
^Actually that’s not a bad idea! I’m taking both of them to the forge and….. “Oh crap, the forge doesn’t even SEE them!!!” Ugh, at least I could have had some morbid pleasure in flushing them down the drain
For the love of all things kitten, I HOPE someone from Anet reads this post. And, if they were smart (they are) they’d know not to reply. I have some really colorful metaphors to share
Wha, they don’t show? o.o That’s terrible! I suggest you hold on to it still, who knows…the devs may change it so you can do something else with it seeing as there are quite a few people who have more than one.
Thanks everyone!. Even if the situation is still the same, at least you’re making me feel better about it
Seriously though…. I’m not the only one to do this? That many of us have multiples of AKS too?
Well, the other one I was thinking of was the Hero’s Band item, which was a pre-release item I think.
If I’m wrong though, my bad. I just swear I’ve heard the prefix unique before and with some other item I’ve managed to get a hold of two and not been able to use both at the same time.
I might have been mistaken however, and if so, sorry.
Edit: Yep, I was wrong about the Hero’s Band. I’m gonna go look around at Karma Vendors and see if I can remember where I saw that word before. I swear it’s been around. :/
Edit2: Well, crud. What I thought were originally Unique aren’t. I am truly stumped. Sorry for my early post, I honestly thought there were other items that were unique prior to this.

Ascended rings from FotM are also unique.
Warrior Nuuk (80 War)

Has ANET ever explained this unique mechanic anywhere ?
It’s not a complicated mechanic…
It means you can only have 1 of that item equipped.
The Ancient Karka Shell is account bound, right? Why not just save it for your next level 80 character?
Mad Memories states it is unique in its tooltip, though not like it possible to equip two of them anyway :V
The “Ancient Karka Shell Box” is also labeled “Unique” and people claim to have several of them equiped on a single character.
Have you filed a support ticket or a bug report? You should do both. If it doesn’t make sense that you could equip only one on a character then it is possible that it is a bug. Posting on the forum isn’t the way to get A-Net to help you, and there’s nothing that we, as players, can do for you except remind you to file tickets.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I followed your suggestion and filed a support question. I’ll keep this updated as to any responses.
Though I did find another asking the same question on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/13rfe8/what_do_i_do_with_two_ancient_karka_shells/
So it does appear I wasn’t they only one to fall into this trap as well. I’m reading on the forums about Ascended Rings now being the same way, you can have only one of them. But, at least those are drops and people aren’t spending 30 gold on them
The reason why I would not keep it is, since it’s account bound, all you do is bounce it between characters. Which take less than 30 seconds. Surely holding on to 30 gold is worth 30 seconds, right?
I even tried tossing two dissimilar orbs into the upgrade slot to get the names to be different. Hoping it might help but, nothing….
Here is the response I received from Arenanet. Also, a link to another thread where someone else has done the same thing as I did and purchased two of them.
“Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team. We would like to be able to offer refunds or exchanges for purchases, but at this time we’re unable to make these kinds of adjustments to characters. We simply do not have the tools to provide this service.
I’m sorry that there’s not more that we can do in this case. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns."

As far as GW2 is concerned, the Ancient Karka Shells and Ascended rings are the only Unique items I am aware of, even though the concept of Unique items has been there in previous MMOs. If GW2 is someone’s first MMO, however, that might be an issue there. In addition, those items are level 80 meaning that a new player would not encounter those items until that very point.
Here’s a suggestion that ArenaNet could implement in-game: in the “Hints” section of the game (which can be accessed by clicking the circled ? icon next to the sPVP icon on the upper left), it should list an entry for Unique Items. Upon acquiring a Unique item, it could noticeably warn those that the piece of equipment that they have acquired (or even just looked at in chat or vendor window) is Unique and only one of that kind can be equipped.
I am Fleeting Flash, in-game dungeon cosplayer of Reddit Refugees [RR] .
This is my first MMO actually I would have appreciated a heads up tool tip before purchasing. Because what makes this “unique” is in introducing a brand new item format without it being mentioned ahead of time.
The fix for me would be to removed this “unique” concept completely. Or, another idea is to simply make a Mystic Forge recipe so we can transmute the item. Something of equal value that can be worn beside the Ancient Karka shell would be great. I’m not asking for anything beyond what I paid for. Which is being quite fair in my eyes.
Perhaps an explicit reminder pop-up or hint when an account is started, saying that any terms not understood in a tooltip should be checked with /wiki? I appreciate finding things out myself, and not being hand-held through everything, but a one-time reminder like that shouldn’t bother even the hardest-core DIYers. And since it was apparently a new addition, another hint indicator about what the term unique means in the context of the game. (But they don’t have that for soulbound, or the types of soulbound, and account-bound. So it seems inconsistent. How do new players figure out what that means? I’d assumed people look up unfamiliar terms.)
I can understand why ANet would think they’d shouldn’t have to say more, but I’ve seen several people in this and other games think that “unique” isn’t meant quite so literally when it comes to a video game, especially if it looks like you can acquire more than one. And simply not allowing you to have more than one in your bags causes its own set of problems, as seen with WoW needing to move from “unique” to “unique-equipped” over time, for example.
..wonder if a support ticket, explaining the situation would help in getting the G back…
It won’t because they don’t restore items.
Hey guys,
I guess probably a majority of the playerbase won’t know this given that this is hard to attain, but it’s been confirmed by legendary owners, that legendaries are unique. You cannot for example equip two legendary daggers together. So this mechanic has been in game since the beginning.
Do I think the wiki or anet should’ve told us more about it? Yes.

Dont worry even if forge doesent see them just add the others and c if it works anyway, its a known bug.
Tis only what you can do for all
Arc the Fallen, see…. I didn’t even know Legendaries were unique. Thank you for pointing this out. Being a bit OCD (surprising I know) I mapped the requirements for my dream build. One of them is with two Frostfangs. The wiki doesn’t list it as unique, just soulbound. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Frostfang Which is absolutely no sweat off my brow because I haven’t even leveled up to being full exotic’s yet.
The person in billing that’s been helping me was kind enough to forward my suggestions for a new mystic forge recipe to the dev team. Though expressed the more we discuss it on the forums, the more it will be considered by the dev team. Which leaves me hopeful that they do listen to our needs and concerns. #crossesfingers
