Salvage or sell rare gear?

Hi All,
So, I’m pretty new but I’m finally running World Bosses and Silverwastes and have been selling everything rare. I keep hearing about ectos though and I’m wondering what they are for and should I be salvaging my rares for ectos to sell or use for something else and if so what? My main question is if I’m salvaging rares then how do I make gold in the game? Sorry if this question seems so noobish! Any help is appreciated.

My suggestion, if you happen to have some mystic forge stones from your dailies, make yourself a mystic salvage kit and salvage all the rare drops you get. Ectoplasm is a rather important ‘end-game’ material. It’s pretty much used in any recipe for exotic or above quality gear.

So, basically, yes you want a lot of ecto to tap into later on. Now you could buy some, but salvaging rares gives you both ecto and materials, which you’ll want later too. So definately salvage.

If you can’t make a mystic salvage kit, use the master salvage kit. If you happen to stumble upon a black lion salvage kit, don’t waste it on rares, save that gorgeous thing for exotics, so you can get some dark matter.

Most people make money by running dungeons daily. Chest farming in the Silverwastes is also popular. If you’re going to sell materials, decide on your immediate goals first, because if you’ll have to buy them again later, you’re probably losing money in the process.

Ecto is short for “Glob of Ectoplasm” is a high end crafting material that is obtained from salvaging rare/exotic weapons and armor. The rate of salvage is 0.875 with a master/mystic salvage kit so multiply the price of ecto by 0.875 if it sells for more sell it on the TP if less salvage it. Example ecto= 40s 0.40 × 0.875= 0.35 if the price of ecto is 40s anything over 35s sell anything under salvage. That said it’s probably better for you just to sell the rares, your dealing with probability when you salvage so you need large sample sizes to minimize the “luck” aspect. If however you do need ecto for crafting then salvage to save the 15% TP fee.

protip: only use the mystic salvage kit for your rares/exotics. If you use them on everything you will run out of mystic forge stones.

What’s wrong with my Black Lion Salvage kit? I’ve salvaged at least 4 exotics that were probably all 75-80 and so far 0 Globs of Dark Matter.

You should save BL kits for when you need the upgrades off an item. Unless you are opening lots of BL chests, you won’t be getting a lot of them (sans buying them).

BTW, there is nothing wrong with the BL kit in terms of Dark Mater….sounds like you just had some bad RNG luck (it happens to everyone at times).
