I don’t really care if I get trolled on this.

Almost one year in on HoT. We were given mentor tags. We were givien expanded comm abilities. Still it’s like pulling teeth to get folks to even apple on events or give any kind of guidance.

It just seems crazy to me. Why wouldn’t U want to give back on experiece and knowledge u’ve gained to help the next generation come in , stay exited, and help those after them?

I’ve tried for almost an entire year to at least get folk to put up those mentor’s on events while they’re active, to ask people to point out wp’s of current objective: to show map is active and to show people where things are happening currently, to no avail.

Idk if people are just scared to mentor , or just like forget u I can’t spend a second to help anyone, I got another chest to open?

It’s just seems crazy to me. With the tools anet has given us to take on some kind of role in leading and 95% of folks just look for a comm or say screw it.

tdlr: why not help someone outside yourself. Just takes a few seconds in many instances, and you help everyone including yourself???

Im a 4 year vet with HOT so /mentor and Commanders Tag. While I agree that Vets should help, especially if its being called out in map chat I dont think it should be expected every time we log in. Sometimes I log in and help out and lead and sometimes I just like to let someone else do it.

Different people use their commanders tags for different reasons. I know in guilds I have been in they do anyways. Just because you see a commander running in a map doesnt mean they are there for the same reasons you are. If you need more help use the internet to google the guides and walkthroughs of the event you are doing and sorry … stop looking for someone to hold our hand

When life knocks you down, roll over and look at the stars.

Only time I’ve used it is to draw attention in VB, to assist with people gathering to defend rally points only. I would use it for anything similar, but not if it requires giving out information or instruction.

Wouldn’t do it any other time because mostly, I’m people-averse, and can’t be bothered with the hassle you get if you do even the tiniest thing wrong.

This is pretty much me exactly.

Certain Meta events in PvE require group coordination and ‘Involved’ commanders, but that is certainly NOT the only use for commander tags. Yes they can be abused during these situations, but even during these meta events there may not be enough commanders present willing to sign up for all that. Sometimes the best you can have is just a tag to rally people to and maybe get group counts for balancing.

In most other situations tags are really useful on maps to get enough people to do the event. In NO way is it necessary for someone popping a tag to sign up for answering any and all questions. A tag can merely be a marker on the map to advertise more bodies are needed.

I used to help, if even say “I’m putting on my mentor tag just for this pve event. Yes, I know what I’m doing”. I’ve only led 6 or so maps in verdant brink to full tier 100% completion. And I mean full lead, I even had commanders assisting me when I asked and was given 300 gold to buy a tag. (Verdant is my fav map) But it got to be point where people stopped listening when we wanted an event map, there was zero communication and we’d get the map to 50%ish percent by nightfall and there was always that one troll commander who literally put his tag on to rally people to the event he/she needed then leave and say there was no need for a mentor. It happened one to many times, so I gave up. I’m not speaking for others though. I just stick to pvp now.

I learned everything by myself, by watching and reading guides. Nobody told me what to do, nobody spoon fed me like a little baby. Why can’t others do the same? Why can’t they do the research before they join an event? Most of them are really easy anyway and don’t require any preparation. If they do, people usually write instructions into say and map chat. If the newbies wanna learn, they will listen to the chat and do what others say. If they’re just stupid griefers who wanna ruin the event for everyone by purposely doing what they shouldn’t, well… I can’t do anything about it.

Also, if people are frikkin sheep who refuse to give an event a try just because they don’t have a big shiny tag to follow, I’d rather not have these people at all. If you have a small party of strong independent (yet cooperative) people, it goes much smoother than just a bunch of headless chickens following a comm tag and you have good feeling that everyone is contributing just as much as you are.

2 years ago I used to patiently explain everything to new players, but after you get asked the same question for the 20000th time or see people doing the same BS again and again, you kinda become cynical about it and rather find some other group/map to do the events with.

I tend to only Apple up when:
- People are on a map asking about a guild bounty and I spot it. I’ll tag the closest waypoint, and tag up letting them know where it is at. I’ll then follow it until I see people showing up.
- Same for Treasure Mushrooms.

greed is simpler for most people and the best thing you can be greedy with is your time.

You cannot make people be nice and helpful by berating them. Believe me I have tried. I have tried in ways you will never know and I promise you never want to find out. In ways that will jar you from your sleep on starless nights…

You simply cannot make most people do anything with this tactic. However you could alter your methodology.

Why not use greed against them rather than be exploited by it and offer them something for their time. After all it is their time and not your time, with which they are free to do as they please.

Hi, I have a commander tag. I originally bought it before the prices went up and I knew it would be handy to hold onto. I didn’t really use it back then because I honestly didn’t know jack about the game. However, after the HOTS expansion I can say I’m definitely more well informed. I’ve definitely been using it whenever the situation calls for it.

OP has this odd idea that people aren’t tagging because they don’t want to share information or something during events. People don’t apple during events because they don’t want to make the map confusing. Personally during the events I’d rather have people join the commander as he/she should be the one they’re listening to.

I don’t tag often because I have anxiety dealing with people. However, I suck it up if the event needs a few more leaders. I even go as far as marking key points with the new symbols and explaining each step. While fellow commanders usually wont go as far, they’re usually willing to respond to questions if you just ask.

My personal opinion of apples is that they’re great for flagging small events or hero points you plan on doing. However, majority of the time they’re abused and generally just raised because the whole map was doing it. I’ve personally found it frustrating trying to commander when there’s like 30 apples on the mini map.

I’ve never ran into a situation where a veteran refused to help others. I’ve never been asked to put on a mentor tag, but if people are having problems, I am always willing to run over and help out. Actually, I forget I have the mentor tag most of the time. If you shout out in map chat for assistance, there are always people who will be willing to assist. Also, I’ve seen many maps with multiple people running around with mentor tags which only serves to confuse people. In addition, there is often the silent dude with the commander tag standing in a remote corner of the map afk, who only serves as a distraction for people who want to finish events.

There are always rude people regardless whether in game or in real life, but on a whole, the people I have ran into in game have been very nice and very helpful. I find that the golden rule works best, give assistance to others and in return they will assist you.

Commanding is a different beast altogether though. I’ve commanded Dragon’s Stand a few times, but it is draining, especially when people don’t listen to you or follow directions. You get all the blame and it is a thankless job. I want to thank all those who continue to command that long meta-event map. You guys are awesome. Communication is key when it comes to either commanding or mentoring.

The last time I used my mentor tag was when I was pointing out the entrance to Don’t Touch the Shiny, which isn’t near any landmark. Usually if I’m giving help I don’t bother to apple-up. I just help the guy. I try to reserve the tag for when it will be useful, like drawing a crowd to an important event.

I’ll put my 2 cents on this, when you spend A LOT of time explaining simple stuff to people, and they still don’t get it, it starts to get old.
You’re basically asking people to type the same stuff over and over and over again for the next guy and the one after that, and the one after…

Don’t forget this is an MMO, now in your romantic view that might mean adventuring with other people, playing a story or making up your own in a wonderful world of magic…
What it really is, is GRIND, and a lot of it, people will find the most efficient way to collect what they need and do it till they fall asleep.

Remember the early days, people were spouse to collect Badges of Honor by killing people in WvW so they could use those towards building a legendary weapon, and what did they do?
Group up to exploit the jumping puzzles in the borderlands with Mesmers so they could rack up those Badges of Honor as quickly as possible, then complain in the forums on how it was a terrible experience…

Lastly I’d advise you to point the finger at yourself and go on starting areas helping genuine new players, see how that goes and how rewarding it is.

I run commander tag a bunch in both PvE and WvW (Eotm also).. Know what? It is a pain in the #$$^$^. You get tons of back seat drivers, little or no thanks and just headaches when you tag up..

For the OP, after awhile buddy, you just get tired of it.

My experience with Mentor/apples have generally been positive when I first tried GW2. In Queenesdale a mentor came on, saying he’s there to answer any questions for new players! He was very helpful.

Commanders – yes, it was a guild led, but organized the fight in Sparkfly Fen (anyone else used to see/call it Sparkly Fen?, Tequatl – no issues.

And yes I’ve seen issues; I rezz’d a mentor once and then died doing it, and he left me running away; I asked a Commander a question about a fight once and he told me to fudge off. But that was the worst response from one.

As a player that loves to help new players/old in another MMO; I do think when you do tag up, you should be doing so for the right reasons and understand it’s not always appreciative and a thankless tag; some egos; etc. TBH it’s better that way as many helpful veterans not tagging who are awesome, but when anyone sees a tag and does tag up they should hopefully be doing so for the selfless reasons not for ego/hating it/just for themselves/etc. AND have brass balls Because it does set you apart and ppl have expectations whether realistic or not or are just trolls or jealous even and looking for someone to blame. It is a thankless thing and I think ppl get that enough in RL they dont want that in game.

I’ve seen more Mentor taggers being that then kittens from my experience.

I try to make it a point if helpful/they’re trying to whisper a thanks or say so in /say or /map. One person showing appreciation can go a long way.
