Q:

No gear to get once 80.
No rewards for pvp or pve
You basically just play, hit 80, then what? Do the same thing you been doing since lvl 1.
I’m gonna play my toon to 80 to get my money’s worth. So far it is fun but I’m worried it’s going to get boring fast. With nothing to shoot for then why bother?
I would play just to mess with the dungeons but I hear they are so hard it isn’t even fun. I’m holding judgment on that since I haven’t been in one myself yet..
I’m not a hard core player by any means so when I get a chance to play I need to make it worth my time. Just seems there’s no goals to be met in this game tho.

You can always try a different class, WvWvW, or sPvP. If you take a random group of people into the dungeons they can be hard, but if your with a group of friends that works well together they are not impossible.

Yes.. sPvP.. WvWvW, Tourneys, there is Legendary gear at 80 that will take a long while for most to obtain. Im sure there is more but since im mostly interested in just the PvP those are the things that I can point out as really enjoyable and you dont really NEED to be level 80 because of scaling but it does help in WvW.

The good thing about GW2 model is that you don’t pay monthly so if you get bored then you can put it on the self for a few weeks until you feel like giving it another shot. Or you can wait for the inevitable expansion.
However most likely you can create your own objectives, your own aims.

Let me remind you that the game is FREE TO PLAY. Now that that’s out of the way let me ask you something… What incentive is there to those other games that constantly have to following a carrot on a stick by making you raid a dungeon for months to get gear that will become obsolete shortly after you obtain it? Is that FUN? Or is it the aspect of raiding itself that entertains you, not the gear? Think about it… You’ll realize there’s no point in being stuck on that treadmill for the gear alone.

This game doesn’t make you feel like you HAVE to do that. Just enjoy yourself… you said you want the typical endgame, but then complain that the dungeons are difficult… I don’t understand your logic. Grab a group of friends and have fun, explore the world, and build upon your character. There’s definitely gear to be had that is better than what you end up with as a fresh 80, but once you work for that set of gear that’s it (but doesn’t necessarily mean that will be all there is)… work on discovering legendary gear and getting different looking gear. The game’s PvP alone makes it worth all that money you’re NOT spending.

This is sort of like asking what keeps someone playing a first person shooter (multiplayer). I’d say the challenge of PvP is really the only thing right now, just like it would be in something like Counter-Strike. Besting other players is something that many find appealing. One could make the argument that this game was marketed towards PvE players, yet contains very little ‘end game’ PvE. I would mostly agree with that, and normally I hate PvP, but I’m going to give it a shot and treat it like I would treat Counter-Strike.

This isn’t a new “type” of game by any means… it just does things different form what you’re used to. The ONLY difference between “end game” in this game and everything else is that you won’t see changes in the gear’s stats (maybe very small in some cases)… That’s it. There might not be Raids right now, but there still is a form of dailies/monthlies (That you can do from day one and that you SHOULD do to save up coins to make the best gear in the game) and group content that you run multiple times to accumulate gear. Aside from stats barely changing, or even at all, they all look different and that’s the point… to gear your character to look how you want it. Do you really need jumps in stats on gear to feel any sense of achievement in the game???

I don’t play to earn some virtual trophies to validate my worth. There is no “meaning” or “goal” in playing a mmo; you play just to have fun. You know what’s pointless and meaningless? playing the game to get to the max level or pvp just so you can get the best gear and be “better” than everyone else in the game. That’s pathetic.

Stats are not meaningless. They have plenty of meaning in this game. Each profession has multiple ways of stacking and mixing stats. The only difference between GW itemization and WoW itemization is that GW does not drag out the process of achieving the best gear in the game. The question then becomes, “what is there to do once the best gear in the game is obtained?” For many WoW players, they never have to answer this question because they never get to a point where they have best in slot gear for every slot. But for the ones that do, they often turn to PvP. In GW2, I think it is quite obvious that the ‘end game’ is PvP centric, even though there is a solid PvE leveling experience.

It looks like you don’t ever want to have to answer the question above, which I can respect. For you, the fun part of MMORPG’s is feeling a sense of neverending progression. I, too, love that feeling, but find GW2 to be an incredibly refreshing change.

Things that I enjoy in this game:

Community. Helping people in map chat. Helping my server in WvW. Just being friendly and active with other players.

Playing the market. There are quite a few things that are easy to find, but are selling for a lot right now.

Exploring: Not just doing all the hearts, POIs, and events, but seeing the world, reading books on shelves. Finding events that don’t instantly show up on the map.

Just doing whatever. For the first time in a long while, I am playing a game where I do not always have to be questing. I can sit back and craft, do all the things above, and typically just chill.

So far the attention to detail in this game is great. A world was created where I can have some escapism and just enjoy things.

In summary, what keeps it fun for me, is trying to be helpful and active in the community and enjoying the world that was crafted for us players.

I continue to play because I’ve yet to see an end to enjoyable content. I have been playing since the pre-release at least 2 hours a day and have reached level 46 as a Necro. I want to reach level 80 and max a few crafting professions. I am not going out of my way to explore any of the map, as I want to leave stuff for me to discover on my other characters I want to play.

I have yet to get in to crafting, even though I really should. I would like to try out a few of the different craft schools, as well as make a legendary or two.

My “end game” goal is to deck myself out in the absolute best gear for WvWvW PvP. I plan to spend a lot of time and effort getting the best of the best.

I also have the goal of being able to afford a bunch of bank and bag upgrades by only using the in-game money to purchase gems.

I have no doubt that I will get bored of GW2 sometime, but for now I don’t see when that will be, and I’ve got to admit I’ve already gotten more than my moneys worth of fun from the game.

I’ve also got to say that the community is pretty nice. On rare occasions you run in to the odd kitten, but generally everyone is nice and helpful. I attribute this to the fact that a majority of people are to busy having fun playing the game to be idiots.

For me, I focus more on the journey than the destination. That’s not to say I’m just wandering around aimlessly (though that can be surprisingly fun too). I do have goals, and I know where I’m going. But my rewards are all the experiences I have, and all the things I discover, along the way. When I finally put down the elder dragons, I’ll look back at all the things I’ve done and experienced on my journey. And that, to me, will be its own reward.

That’s also what keeps me playing Super Monday Night Combat, Counter Strike, Team Fortress and so on. There aren’t any long term goals.

That being said, there’s SO much to do even after you hit 80. There’s 3 zones packed to the brim with challenging, fun and cool events that directly affect everything in Orr, there’s so many crafting skills to get up, there’s legendary weapons to craft, there’s instances to complete, pvp to compete, WvW to dominate and kegs to be brawled over!

For me there are three things that will keep me playing.

The first are dungeons, in particular their Explorable Mode variants and the armor skins that can be earned from them. As hard as they are, and as many runs as it takes to complete a set, it’ll feel really good to have it under my belt and in my inventory. Especially with the dye system in this game, I love the idea of having more unique sets of armor to customize into whatever color combination I wish. ANet will probably be able to strongarm some gems from me for storage space once I start building up armor sets.

The second is PvP in all its forms. With new sPvP maps planned for release and what’s available already being really fun and engaging, I can see myself spending considerable time in there after finishing with most of the standard PvE content. WvW will be a big draw for me as well, although I’ll probably wait until level 80 to really go into it full force.

The final kicker is that I enjoy the storyline, and quests, and really want to try the other classes as well. This will inevitably lead me to playing other characters beyond my first, to see events from the perspective of other races and gameplay from the perspective of other professions.

That’s what I’m going to stick around for.

Its not for a sense of “achievement” its because this is an RPG and stats mean EVERYTHING IN RPGS. An RPG with “meaningless” stats is not an RPG.

Please enlighten me as to why stats mean everything. WHY should they mean anything? They mean plenty while you’re leveling up and then you reach the top where everything evens out. You are capable of running all group content and aren’t kittened in any way compared to anyone else. This allows a more enjoyable experience for everyone as a whole… no one ever liked the part where you needed a X number Gearscore in order to be welcome to some content.

You’re stuck on thinking that you MUST NEED these things, but you don’t… It’s all fluff and illusion. Just think about how the typical RPG is these days. You hit max level and begin the gear grind… you grind and grind for weeks just to get the numbers on your screen to go up by a couple hundred only to go to more content where you were just as viable as you were in the previous content before you got the gear. It’s an endless cycle and it’s NOT needed to have fun… It’s just an illusion put in place to produce some sense of progression. Again, PLEASE tell me why it’s needed.

You don’t grind for better gear, you grind for prettier gear. And my, is it ever pretty. There’s a bow that shoots rainbows. There’s a sword that looks like a piece of the night sky.
It seems to me that it would take some months for a super hardcore player to get legendaries (the name of the weapons I just described). And if you’re that hardcore, it’s likely that you’re into some amount of pvp, and world vs world pvp will keep you entertained forever if you have about 15-20 people to play with.

I have to add my 2c worth here even though I’m simply parroting what’s already been said. This game is unique in many ways compared to what we have had to play in the mainstream. The personal storylines are my biggest thrill. Seeing several toons of the same race (even same class) walking completely different stories is an amazingly fresh approach to personal progression. I would sign on with anyone on a personal storyline just to “see what happens next”… yes, I’m an avid novel enthusiast as well as MMO gamer.

Don’t bother racing to endgame. Enjoy the journey. Find the hidden event switches (I’ve accidentally bumped into several). I can’t imagine running out of things to do for quite some time and have no intent to fret over that issue.

Well here’s my plans:
1. 100% world map completion by level 80 (I hope).
2. Complete personal story once I hit 80 (I went off on a detour so it’s unfinished).
3. Complete the crafting professions.
4. Go through all the dungeons and complete them on both story and explorable mode (including all the variations). That right there will keep me busy quite a while.
5. Collect stuff needed for and craft exotic/legendary stuff.
6. Finally touch on WvWvW and PvP just so I can get those achievements.
7. Hunt down and complete jumping puzzles.
8. Finish collecting the rest of the hunter pets. I’m missing 9 and I might find them by the time I reach 80 but if not, I’ll go back and hunt down the rest of them.
9. Save up the King’s ransom in gold to purchase the Tier 3 Sylvari cultural medium armor.
10. See what achievements I’m missing and attempt to complete them.

And when I run out of all of that to do and can’t think of anything else, level an alt with a different profession and do it all over again.

hiya grebber. here’s why i have been foaming at the mouth to play, and why i’ll continue playing:

raiding is boring. the treadmill to grind the gear to raid to grind the gear to go to harder raids to grind the gear … you get the picture. i remember the magic of my first mmo, wow, when i first began playing. back then, i had my kids in their late teens, and i figured it was ok for me to fall into a game, not having to worry about the constant attention required to care for them.

i started playing wow just before bc launched. the first time i took the boat from darnassas to dark shore? it was then i started to see, and realize, the scope and size of the world that had been created. everything was new, it was magic … it was just waiting for me to explore!

i took weeks just to get to level 20. lol, between constantly rerolling to figure out what i liked, then running around, exploring, socializing, etc etc etc … then, the guild invite came, and i joined a guild, and discovered even more the magic of socializing with a great group of people.

after that, i became a guild leader for noobs, essentially. gave them 10g, gave them bags, helped them learn the world. it was still fun, still exciting, and people played for the love of game, not for raiding.

then came gearchecking. and hardcore raiding with min-maxers. and the nerfing of all the magic obstacles i’d had to fight so hard to overcome, throughout the world (brumeran, anyone?). and the redo of the talent trees, so that hybridization was out. and so on and so on. after cata, i just couldn’t stand it anymore, and i went to rift. rift did a whole lot right, but at the end, it was still a gear grind. then sw:tor came out, and their endgame was non-existent, AND their worlds were pretty … ooky. so. here i am, with a dreamer’s soul, stuck with games that promise me the opportunity to do dailies, every single day, so i can earn rep so i can earn gear so i can continue grinding gear …

and along comes anet, and gw2. it’s a world filled with magic, new discoveries. i feel like i’m playing in a work of art, from the visuals on down the line. i see no need for the treadmill; i can play my characters to 80, then roll another one. i can explore the different races, the different professions, and even within that, i can explore all the variations on personal stories. i can spend all my time exploring, looking in nooks and crannies, finding the bed at the top of the windmill with the kitty lolling on it.

i can take part in the dynamic events, if i want, and kill! kill! kill! i can sit in the cities, and socialize with folk (though i do wish there were some cross-city chat for different levels). i can hang with my friends, when they’re lower than me, and build xp. they can hang with me, when i’m lower than they are.

people seem to forget that RP is a huge part of mmoRPg. roleplaying involves immersion, and it’s how this whole genre came about. i’m not a hardcore rper, but i LOVE a world that i can lose myself in the story, the magic, the scenery, the exploration of everything.

so. i play gw2. i will play gw2 until i’ve absolutely exhausted my love of exploring everything, until my friends are no longer here, and the new friends i’ve made are no longer here. i’ll play until there is absolutely nothing new to learn about the professions, the races, the factions. i’ll play until i’ve rediscovered my once-upon-a-time love of pvp, and re-exhausted that.

in other words, i play gw2. that’s all. and that’s enough.

hope this helps!

i think the point anet, and gw2, have made is that progression is NOT a requirement to keep people playing. but that’s a test that time will prove or not, ya know?

but think about this. the treadmill mode? it’s there to keep YOU paying your money to this massive enterprise that’s made to … make money.

big difference between a developer who wants to make money, and one who wants people to love the game. it does make the game different — something many of us are quite enjoying.

Fun, pure unspoiled gaming fun

I would play just to mess with the dungeons but I hear they are so hard it isn’t even fun. I’m holding judgment on that since I haven’t been in one myself yet.

And they should be kept like that, hard, even harder just on the edge being impassable for anyone lacking the skill to do it.

actually grebber, the dungeons hearken back to a way of doing things before everything became a numbers game. once upon a time, we had to work together as teams. heck, i remember when dps used to protect the healers! nowadays, in your generic mmorpg, dps says “if i wanted to protect the healer i’d have a sword and board.” or somesuch nonsense.

the dungeons are hard, but not ridiculously so. if you have a good group of people, you’ll only die a couple/few times per boss, until you learn all the mechanics, and the myraid ways around the mechanics. consider them more “challenging” than hard. and a lot of us “old” players? we grin at the challenge! we strike our shields, bare our teeth, and scream out bring it, baby!
