My apologies for creating another “best” thread, but I need some clarification.

I am downloading the game now. I have played numerous other MMOs/RPGs. I am a casual player (I have a family and job), but hardcore when I am on (like the most bang for my buck).

I have read as much as I can on the other professions:
Warrior = easymode, farm, burst dps
Ele = rewarding but lots of dying and needs player skill
eng = lots of options? not best at anything?
rng = steady dps, but pet issues I guess
thief = high burst dps, one-trick pony?, requires kiting?
mes = same as ele but has a pet?
nec = lots of util and survivability, and decent dps?

Anyways…I am probably wrong on my profession discussions, but that is what I remember reading. Everyone has their opinion. I know all classes are good to lv 80 and can be good in any situation with the right skilled player.

My question is which profession requires a ton of work in fights and requires lots of different skill choices depending on the fight? What I don’t want is a one-trick pony profession that does the same thing no matter what because its the best. I also don’t want to spend all day trying to kill stuff but can’t die either (paly in WoW). I like classes that place AoE “stuff” over there, start working bursty stuff over here, sends something over there….maybe a pet doing something behind me…basically lots of stuff going on.

Sorry for the long post….any help is appreciated. I don’t have the hours to try every profession to 80 and see what I like. I hope to get it right the first time.

Engineer can bring a lot of damage and is pretty much the noobfriendlier version of the ele because you can swap kits whenever you want, ele on the other hand switches attunements which are on a cooldown. Both professions are extremly fun.

Engineer is incredibly fun. In fact, I’m about to make another!

Flamethrower is (I think) unique in that you can hit opponents through walls. All the kits have their specialities so you are never stuck with one build.

And the turrets when launched underwater are a wonder to behold

I should add that I am usually solo PvE (mainly because PvP never impressed me and I don’t have the time to wait to form groups). That being said, this game could be different and PvP could end up being my bread n’ butter…who knows =P

I 3rd engi. Great in PVE, awesome in pvp. Lots of skills available at one time and lots of different combos you can do.

Mesmer would probably be my second reccomendation. Lots of teleports requiring you to be mobile and active while playing

I’m much more fond of mesmer than engineer because engineer means a lot of keyboard dancing, which might be exactly what you want. Also one of the engineer’s highest dps ranged options, grenade kit, is 100% ground target skills and no auto attack at all.

Mesmer doesn’t have pets, exactly (though I thought they did at launch and therefore resisted trying them out for a while). What they have are spells that persist until dispelled/killed or the target dies, along with an option to do one of four different things with a pre-emptive dismissal (dps burst, confusion, daze, or mesmer brief invulnerability to damage). There are a lot of very useful utility skills to swap out depending on the situation and two major build styles with sub-builds of each.

I feel very in control of the battlefield on my mesmer, and very reactive with my engineer. Ymmv, of course.

Also copy/pasted from another thread, but a few basics of the game before you start. This applies to all classes in all situations

The combat in this game is much more action-oriented- you can avoid attacks by strafing and dodging as you fight, and using skills to counter enemy attacks. It’s more important to avoid attacks than to heal them.
There is no healer/tank/DPS trinity. Everyone is responsible for their own survival, for DPSing the enemy, for coordinating support and control to make fights more manageable.
Your success in this game depends largely on your skill as a player, rather than your gear.
I highly recommend giving this a read:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first

In addition, GW2 is highly unlike WoW in many other respects. The game’s meant to be more of a journey- you take your time and enjoy the process of leveling, explore to your heart’s content, and when you hit 80, there aren’t tiers of raids and gear to chase one after the other. You pretty much find what you enjoy doing and do it.
My and other players’ advice- don’t treat this game like WoW. Forget everything you know about MMOs and enjoy the journey.

eng and mes seem like good choices so far….lots of utility and options depending on what you are fighting….very cool

Around what level, can you have a really good idea what your profession is going to be like playstyle wise? If I can know within a couple hours, I can try them all out and have a better idea what I am getting myself into.

At LEAST level 30. But leveling in this game is not hard at all. 1 level = 1 hour from 15-80, with 1-15 being a bit faster. So you can have a max leveled character in less than 80 hours.

Pvp in this game automatically levels you to 80, and everyone has the same choice for gear, weapons, stats, traits, utility skills, everything. This is a pretty good way to get a feel for how a profession plays, tho i wouldnt advise doing this right away until you get a good understanding of basic game mechanics or youll get roflstomped by other players

Didn’t even think to watch gameplay demos on youtube. I have a completely different understanding of professions now. mes & nec seemed to be the same play style, with eng and ele similar as well, but ele just appeared more efficent. The eng was going all over the place doing the least dmg, and just going nuts on skills trying to keep the mob away from him.

You don’t have to actually PvP though. If you go to the lobby in the Mists (hit the crossed swords icon in your little bar at the top left of the screen, pick Go To The Mists) you will be at 80 with default armor and weapons. The vendors give you other runes and sigils and weapons for free. You can open up your trait lines and see what all of them do, and go attack target dummy golems to practice the skill effects and combinations. It’s not quite the same as actually doing PvE or PvP but it helps you get a feel.

Also there is a PvP locker in the Mists with all possible PvP armors organized by armor weight. While the icons are greyed out until you actually get an item to store in that slot, you can still use the preview function to see what you’ll look like just in case appearance matters to you over the length of game play. Bear in mind that you can dye anything but the preview will show in your current dye set so it might look bad color wise.

Just a disclaimer- there’s a wide variety of playstyles for every class, and each playstyle will seem more or less effective depending on the player’s skill level. Engi and ele especially have extremely high skill floors and high skill caps- you’ll hear people whining about how weak they are, when in reality, the player just doesn’t play them well.

Overall, as trite and unhelpful this may be, I recommend trying absolutely everything that catches your fancy; though, going off what I read in your post, engi and ele would be a good place to start.

Most of what needs to be said has already been. You will probably like engi or ele the most.

Hint – when you go ranger, get Flamethrower as quickly as possible. The stock weapons are so kitten dire they are beyond words. Dont waste SP on turrets unless you need to unlock the next skill tier.

Ele and engi are the busiest classes, and the most fun for a lot of people. Depends on your playstyle.
My favorite is necro. Very good condition damage, which is good for aoe pressure. If you can pull off a power spec, then it gets much more interesting. Good aoe damage and cc, decent burst, awesome sustained dps, and melee/600/1200 range all packaged into one devastating class. One of 4 of the most wanted classes for wvw. Others being warrior/guard/ele (couple mesmers). Not so great in pve and dungeons, but its viable.

Engineer was my first class, and I had a bit of trouble wrapping my head around it. I handled her just fine in PvE, but I was useless in WvW. I picked up a Mesmer and haven’t looked back. For whatever reason, this is the class for me.

Engi is definitely busier and there are a ton of clever combinations you can execute. Mesmer requires a very active, well-thought out strategy in combat; as such, it isn’t very forgiving if you misstep. They both have many options to quickly react in combat. Ele is a bit more skill-rotation based that requires tapdancing on your keyboard
