Play what you want to play, and tweak it for different play modes until you’re happy. That’s my advice. If you’re good enough to suit yourself then you’ll be fine.

As is par for the course, the majority of people that to post on the forums tend to be the complainers.
Go to any MMORPG and check the class forums, see if anyone enjoys their class in any game…. Because “nobody” does.
I suggest picking the class that sounds best to you.
You’re the one playing it, after all!

(My vote is for Guardian or Necro)

In sPvP almost every class can find a place aslong as it’s build well and most importantly played well. Ofcourse everyone wants the right balance between role (roamer, farpoint assaulter etc.) but many classes can fit different roles with the right builds. Ofcourse some classes are more beloved than others, but it’s 25% class/build and 75% skill in PvP lowering the difference.

In PvE there’s always optimal set-ups for a certain situation since it never changes (until updated) and is incredibly preditable, aka no need to build your team to be able to face anything since you know what’s coming (slight exception in Fractals at the most.) These set-ups will be applied and showed off by the hardcore guilds and people attempt to copy them, even in PuGs, resulting in certain classes being desired and others slightly left out of the picture. Personal experience can make quite an effect aswell, if someone runs into a lot of bad players on class Y and good players on class X they can easily make the assumption class X will be a better addition to the team. (Most famously Bearbow Rangers, no-one likes them, but a meta-Ranger on the other hand… pretty nice to have) Luckily not everyone is like that, but if you want to be beloved by every single group it’s smart to pick a Favour of the Month class (like almost any group carries a Warrior and an Elementalist.) But if you rather play something you like, pick what-ever and join the groups that fit you (I’d recommend this) or ofcourse form them yourself!

I enjoy all professions and I think they’re all fun. I love certain classes more in PvP and some more in PvE but I don’t think any class is in a really bad shape. For PvE I think Necromancer needs some changes, I feel it doesn’t stand out in anything except being scrappy, but besides that I think it’s the typical MMO balancing issues. I doubt any MMO will ever pull it off that all classes are equally desired and keep them all unique and interesting. From past experiences I actually think gw2 isn’t doing too shabby on that part, assuming you ignore the no holy trinity = everyone’s DPS in PvE aspect.

I don’t think anyone added this (skimmed the topic, sorry) but you seem to have a misconception of ‘berzerker’ in this game. You mention that you wanna play a dps caster, or mage type class, and that you’re frustrated with people saying zerker necro. This is simply the name of a gear set, that gives high dps in the form of power, critical hit chance, and critical hit damage. As far as PvE is concerned, that is the meta, to just kill things as fast as you can instead of gearing for survivability or support. It’s not some sort of archetype where you melee with two axes and no armor or something, it’s just a stat combination. So in fact, your desire to be a ranged dps caster is fine in this zerker meta, as you’ll be welcomed with open arms for doing heavy damage (as far as pvp is concerned, zerker necros are actually quite powerful)

This.

Beserker is simply the name given to armor, weapons, runes etc. that give a bonus to power, precision and ferocity. (Which increases your direct damage, chance of getting a critical hit and the bonus damage on critical hits.)

It’s a pure DPS build, but other than that it doesn’t say anything about your playstyle, it’s entirely possible to be a ranged beserker caster. Just like people using Knight’s gear (power, precision and toughness) aren’t all heavy armor professions defending castles in WvW and people using Rabid gear don’t just stumble blindly into combat attacking anything that comes near. It’s just a name, not a complete description of how you would play.

As other people have said you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the forums. I play 5 different professions and I enjoy all of them, but I don’t spend much time on the forum talking about how well they work for different things because there’s no point, I’d rather spend my time playing. Whereas someone who is frustrated or struggling is likely to come and post about it, either because they want to find a solution or simply because they want to vent.

It’s entirely possible to do any content on any profession, and people do. I’ve seen all 8 professions in dungeons (I personally always do them on my ranger) and a wide variety of builds. It might not always be the most efficient run, but my groups are just playing for fun anyway so it doesn’t worry us if it takes a bit longer.

Any profession can be used to complete everything in PvE and have a lot of fun while doing it. Its just that some profession are better than others.

PvE : Ele, Warrior, Guardian, Mesmer and Thief are better, while Rangers, Necro and Engie are at the bottom

sPvP and Roaming : Mesmer, Necro and Thief are at the top, but pretty much any profession can do a great job.

WvW : Guardian, Warrior, Ele and Necro dominate here with the Mesmer are a top class addition (but only in small number). Engie can more than a decent job and thief have specialist jobs (but other than that, they don’t bring much).

Keep in mind that Power damage is king in PvE and Beserker gear with offensive build are what you should looking for (if you can handle it) and that is for ALL profession. Necro is better at condition, but condition is bad in PvE and that’s why its not the best profession in PvE, but is one of the best in sPvP.

Thats what you learn from the forums. Every class is terrible and underpowered. Somehow that doesnt make them average out against each other.

Classes are all in a pretty good state (a few more so than others) but forum goers are ALWAYS going to claim their favorite class is in some way underpowered so they get improved (rather than nerfed). The fact that they will change in some way is a given in an MMO.

Bersekerer is not the same as melee warrior yolo

It’s just the gearset in which you optimize your damage because higher defense is unnecessary.

If you want to be ranged in pve, then go staff but you are advised to stack in melee ranged almost entirely anyway.

If you’re not happy with this, go to pvp only. Or enjoy pve in not the most efficient way. Up to you. I don’t care. If you want to play how you want, why would it matter whether a or b is viable?

in sPvP lots of builds and professions work. Doesn’t matter much. You can go Staff Ele there as well. The Necros also fare pretty well. And the Engis. And the Mesmer. And there are many build varieties there.

But if you want to maximize your range attack enjoyment, go ahead and PUG SE p3 a lot of times and afk-range the dredge cart. Alternatively, range the wurms and the nightmare tree in a less optimal pug. GG

It should probably also be noted that while “berserker” strictly refers to the armor prefix and not to playing like a crazy person or something, it does require more than just wearing berserker armor then doing whatever else you want. Specifically, a zerker picks the weapon and traits to minmax raw damage output, which means that being a “ranged caster” typically doesn’t fit with a zerker build since you’ll generally be doing much more damage with a melee weapon. The exceptions are engineers and elementalists but even so you’ll generally still want to be standing where all the other melees are so you can share in the AOE buffs.

Moreover, necromancer isn’t strictly “bad” from a PvE perspective but they aren’t good either. You’ll probably get into groups without too much trouble but I wouldn’t be super surprised if you’re the first kicked if the group is struggling and needs to replace a member with someone with more appropriate skills, since in general necro tends not to add anything special that anyone actually needs or wants apart from just sorta being there as DPS filler. Mesmer is a much better choice for being “needed” in dungeons but I should warn you that a “zerker” mesmer isn’t a ranged caster either, he’s expected to be melee with dual swords.
