(ok so for ANET i was told to make a quick paragraph for you what we want out of this post.
can you make a advanced playlist that is free to enter and you need a full group to enter. with the rewards of more tickets then free because the competition will be greater and now we are 1 step closer to going into paids the greatest lvl of skill. this will help the game because we can let the new ppl get better in frees without discouraging them plus we can play all day and we can get better ourselves so we can have more ppl equipped to play paids without being discouraged. eventually making a better pvp community so when ladders come out there will be a advanced ladder and a paid ladder.)

so i have been asking many ppl 100% said this would be a good idea i want to know what everyone else thinks.

add a advanced list. that will be the same as free except you have to be in a group of 5 and you win 3 tickets for first 2 for second and 1 for 3rd and 4th.

reasons this will be good.
a.free
1: i wont feel like a bully when we go into free and destroy pugs. ( wow im so good)
2. the pugs will be able to meet other pugs and eventually form real groups.
3. more pugs will get paid tickets and fell better about themselves and will play more.

c.paid
1. can you make the maps random? (you dont have to but just a suggestion)
2. can you lock in the character you start with is what you have to do the full tournament with?
- paid is pretty legit but with adding advanced you will get more teams out of that that t can compete in paidsthat are maybe to affraid now, or they win a free against pugs then go to paid thinking they are awesome only to be embarrassed so bad they uninstal.

100% of the ppl posting on these forums want this game to get better. yes we cry and whine sometimes but so do babies because they just want something. this is what everyone wants.

i agree. anet did make a 5v5 games but finding teams and getting everyone on the same team seems to be way to much work. making an advanced will eliminate that problem.

I think a lot of these comments are strong ideas that should seriously be regarded. This game was touted as a new E-Sport concept PVP experience. However SPVP has been extremely neglected.

OP is 100% correct a premade group will dunk a group of low level rabbits/deer pugging. Especially since at the moment Paid Queues can be as a long as one hour for a pop. There needs to be a strong focus on adding brackets or some form of elo system.

As well as have a LOCKed character choice. I think its nice that you can swap characters but I feel its far too situation advantage. Run a comp for each different map, instead of forcing someone to play a comp and learning how to match it and adjust to when fighting other teams and other comps instead of just relogging and reselecting a new character to try to out comp the counter comp.

The Random map selection would be really smart to do, that coupled with a locked character choice you can’t predict what to run. Have it random any stage at any round. Running Raid 1st round, then Temple 2nd, 3rd would be Foefire. Next tournament will be a completely new and separate tournament level experience.

OP has strong ideas and these ideas need to be consider to even make this game being taken seriously for a real PVP E-Sport.

Simply put I feel that SPVP is nothing but a seasoning added to a PVE/WvW game.

Can you change characters in the middle of a map? Or just between matches?

I agree, we need a place other than frees to earn tickets and practice with our teams. It isn’t practice if we just stomp on randoms all day nor is it fun for either side (usually). Anet should seriously take a look at this idea.

Right now the free T ques are still too long because so many players are playing hotjoin. There should be a much higher reward for playing tournies so we can draw more players away from hotjoin.

Looking at all the full 16/16 servers, imagine if those people were funneled into the tourny system, then we would have instant-queues.

so after talking to ppl after this post. there really is no reason to do frees because of what i mentioned. no competition and you actually get worse for playing pugs. plus the other reason free takes a while to pop is ppl are scared to play it because of premades so right now free is a lose lose for everyone. (truthfully)

an advanced list built how i stated with those rewards would greatly improve player skill competition and would overall make paids a place were there is more then 8 teams q ing 1 part of the day.

This would basically make the pvp scene 1000x bigger than what it is now. I know things are in the works like custom servers and spectator mode.

But i keep thinking that so much work and time is invested in such a community. Maybe prioritizing something like this would help size up and make some other features actually worthwhile.

so i have been asked how Advanced could be implemented and this is what i think.

Anet has the codes already from free to let ppl in for free plus they have the codes from paid were you need a full group to enter so lets mix those together. plus in paid there is rewards for 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th so lets add those to Advanced and make it 1st 3 tickets 2nd 2 tickets 3rd and 4th 1 ticket. use the free chests dont change that this is basically free you might want to up the glory though because it is harder in here so more glory would make more sence.

lets as a community voice this. the ladders and all that would be nice yes but truthfully how many set teams are there now? there is no point in ladders now until we get teams to climb them competitively. advanced now would make for better ladders in 1 month.

I’m in, any form that resolves pugs vs premade has my vote.

Although it may take too much away from when ranked queues are released. It would be splitting the population even thinner.

This wouldn’t fix any of the problems the pvp system is facing right now, this would just split the sPvP community into 3 categories instead of the actual 2. What this game needs ASAP is the glicko rating ladder and a new matchmaking system like the gw1 GvG queues for example and bring the Automated Tournaments system with set times everyday so people have to register at a specific time instead of waiting over an hour for a queue to pop. This would allow people to waste less time idling in the mists waiting for a pop and also push people to form teams.

Also, the QP ladder is a big joke.

tl;dr: bring back the Gw1 GvG AT system and fast matchmaking queues + ladder all problems will be solved.

yes i do agree it would split us up into 3 groups but truthfully you cant go from pop warner football to the nfl. pop warner is what my kid is in he plays around and has fun. then he will do highschool then college then pro. i dont want to do free neither does all the other top players in the game if you are good u dont fell any sastisfaction from frees now so lets leave that to new ppl so they get better and dont quit. let all the good ppl do advanced and after they get really good move to paids.

a ladder would do what paid did to us now.

paid came out everyone q for it with randoms. there was maybe 3 real teams that had synergy and strats and a main 5. so everyone else lost one or 2 games and said lets switch players or comps then still lost because they mucked around in frees and thought paid would be the same. now after a few more games ppl said no more paids unless main team is on. then ppl got upset that everyone doesnt have a main team on all day so they stand around the mist because free is not fun for good ppl. now friends that wanna play free because they are not on during paids quit because now they cant do either or they are off the main team cause they cant ever do paid quit. and its a downword spiral. a ladder will only be worse for the community right now it would make ppl lose more friends rage more ending with more ppl quitting.

if we have a advanced we would have a place were friends can play also without getting yelled at were ppl can build synergy go over strats plus have a great reward to enter paids plus it will be the top place for competiton until paids start.

but the number 1 concern in pvp is no q pops all day. and the number 1 reason for that is there is not enough teams that have either practiced against real teams or found a main team yet.

advanced is really the only solution to solve these problems. a ladder right now will only do what paid has already done but worse.

dont get me wrong i really want a ladder and i want it today also but who would be on it? 1 team? 2 teams? 3 teams? how about we put advanced in the game for 1 month so when ladders come out there is 50-100 teams

In my opinion the introduction of an advanced option like the op proposed would be a great addition to the game. The use of free tourneys to test strategies and team compositions is a option but it is not practical for continuous testing.

As for the op’s ideas for paid tourneys, the locking of characters is neede. Too often do i see teams change their entire line up under the assumption that the team is playing with a certain tactic. This change should also extend to the players weapons, amulet and gear. In the current paid tournaments players would switch weapons just to gain buffs or change their builds entirely just for certain objectives like killing bosses or trebs.

Great idea. Then we can all play this Game to the FULLEST extent of the law!

You can’t tell a persons skill in the game and there is no real way to even efficiently try out for new teams. Currently you only get rewarded for having found your team and those strong players but even that is bound to die out as its easy to lose interest in a game which doesn’t live up competitively and offer maximum interaction between the players.

Agree with everything except comp swapping, that should only be allowed during the pregame.

I think better daily/monthly achievements would help motivate people to play tournies, maybe make a daily tourney-only achievement reward.

Daily Tournament (Free and Paid)
5 Tournament Matches played
3 Tournament Rounds won (1st, 2nd, and 3rd round count individually as 1, so 3 in total)
10 Kills in Tournaments (Don’t know if it should be higher/low since you don’t want to alienate bunkers)
5 Nodes Captured in Tournaments

Reward: 5 Tournament Tickets, 10 orbs, 1 salvage kit
Completion time is around 45-90 minutes depending on your performance.

Monthly Tournament (Free and Paid) – This one should take a long time but be rewarding
50 Tournament Matches played
30 Tournament Rounds won
100 Kills in Tournaments
50 Nodes Captured in Tournaments
Rewards: 25 Tournament tickets, 50 orbs, 20 crystals, 10 slivers, 5 repair kits

Completion time can range from 20-30 hours. This is a reward for people who play a lot of PvP, and easily obtainable for some us in the span of 1 week. Right now the PvP acheivments are too easy, the monthly can be earned in 1 or 2 hours and the daily only takes about an hour. I think it would be positive to have both tournament and regular acheivments, us PvP players really need something to play for and right now without ladders there isn’t really anything besides getting a high rank.

Why add these achievements?
1. Provides incentive to play tournaments, both paid and free. Earning your daily will award 5 tickets (and tickets are very scarce right now) which provides teams with 1 “free” paid tournament a day.
2. Helps speed up queues, especially paid.
3. Monthly’s award dedicated PvPers with tickets and loot

i agree unskilled teams will come into advanced but atleast they will be in a full 5 party. and the overal goal is to get the unskilled players into more competion so they get better but in the advanced playlist will not piss them off if they lose because they dont lose anything. that will keep them coming in and getting better.

so now we have bad teams that get practice instead of quitting the game they get better and eventually do paids.

i said it before but will again eventually i hope for a advanced ladder and a paid ladder.

This sounds like an awesome idea, would make a great way to build the community as well as make it more competitive and keep it balanced for the people starting to play as well as people who have been playing for a while. This is a fantastic idea and hope it gets put into the game.

I have to disagree with this idea. (Ill try and keep this short)This would be great if we wanted Anet to cater to the small group of Spvpers that are still playing this game. But we will all agree that this is not what we want. What we want is Anet to cater to the PEOPLE WHO HAVE QUIT THIS GAME, we need them back! For this game to succeed as an E-sport (as far off as thats looking these days) we need the core competitive players to come back. Not only that but we need more competitive players to notice GW2 has the potential to become a competitive game and start flocking to us in waves!

For these things to happen we will need.
-First! A TYPE OF RATING SYSTEM.
This does alot of things, the most important of which are as follows; Puts skilled players against skilled players. Puts bad players against bad players.(This makes the game more competitive for EVERYONE. No one gets pissed off at being rolled over and over. And no one gets bored kitten bad teams over and over.
-Second. Spectator Mode
If you cant get people to watch your game you wont have people playing your game.
-Third. Private Servers
Another must have. Without this Third Party sponsors cant hold Tournaments, and without them… guess what… you have no E-sport.

Everyone who as played GW2 at a competitive level knows it uzzing potential, and with these 3 simple things we can avoid a “quick fix” and expand the “Tournament PVP” into something more than just 4 or 5 good teams playing each other over and over, day after day, and turn Guild Wars 2 into the E-Sport that we have all know it can be!

i really like what moist said and im glad that was posted on here.

i too also want the good ppl that left to come back i might even get my team back. but they wont come back to spend tickets in paid to try and rebuild synergy and just get stomped.

a ladder or views also wont help if there is noone getting good at the game to watch. noone will watch the same 2 teams playing all day.

lets say there is 3 set teams now. ptc and pz thats it NA. if advanced came out then in 2-3 weeks there would be 15 set teams. in 1 month 30-40 set teams + new ppl wouldnt quit and old ppl would come back because they can get tickets and play competitively then build synergy.

overall more ppl buy game play free find teammates go to advanced get better and end up in paid with a real team= zero negatives.

a ladder comes out first then yes old ppl come back realize they have no synergy try and reget it in free play pugs so they cant really practice competitively go back to paid get stomped and quit again plus the pugs they beat quit plus the great paid teams quit cause no competition for them and they dont wanna do free.

Adding onto what Moist posted, I believe that a great way to pull people into PvP is to introduce a solo/duo queue matchmaking system just like the system LoL has. Part of the reason why players are discouraged to play TPvP is because it requires the need to gather a team of five in order to play. What we need is a system that allows people to play whenever they want without the pressure to find four other people they match with. There are many great players out there that have difficulty finding other players to queue up for tournaments because they are either not well known or of low PvP rank.

It is also a fun way to encourage players to actually play because at the state the game is in right now, players don’t have much incentive to play TPvP. With this matchmaking system, people will try to prove themselves by raising their rank in solo/duo queue and higher ranked players can have privileges to exclusive rewards (new weapon/armor cosmetics). Better players will be matched with people around the same skill level. This will also allow skilled individuals that have previously not been able to play in teams to be scouted out for and allow new PvP players to match up against other new PvP players as well.

If needed, you can add an ingame voice chat system to allow players to communicate in these games.

There NEEDS to be a solo/duo ladder queue.
That and 5v5 ladder queue should be #1 and #2 priority right now, respectively.
THEN custom games.
THEN, and MAYBE then, this.

A solo queue ladder will help people come back to the game. A solo queue ladder won’t work however until a hard-meta has been determined as existent.

We need to be able to queue up as 1 of the 5 roles, so teams aren’tjust blatantly unbalanced. Then it’ll be easy for people to get into the games, find teams or forge them from the ladder itself. Also, because games should be close often, people won’t be getting smashed and rage quitting all the time. Just my thoughts.

Yeah saater its a good idea, but im done with the game till the fix it and add ladder system. QPs atm are a freakin and utter JOKE of a way to determine who is good and who is not.. I hope they listen to you and others that post here. The PVP still FEELS LIKE BETA to me.. Lots of things wrong with it.

Planetside 2 released yesterday and guess what.. LADDER system in it.. omg…. who woulda thought a PVP game has a ladder system in it, NOT some stupid kittening QP system. All QPs do is show who plays more really… not skill.. and if you say skill I will laugh b/c the tops TEAM used block bug/ svanir rune so yeah no skill required there…

I have witnessed it 1st hand if you wish to deny it.

But I hope they do listen. Maybe Ill return on the next patch and see what they have done to pvp with the 2 devs they have. Till then I am liking planetside 2 atm.. PVP!!!!!!!

I’m in a team that fits into this perfectly.

We have a bunch of players that like to do tourneys (8) and a regular team of 5.
We find Free’s easy and usually walk them, but we want to get better.

Jump into Paid at the cost of 5 tickets (ouch). Lost the first round one day, but learned from it.

Today we got to round 2 and lost to Crossfire on Foefire (hence seeing this post) we played a mirror spec’d group and were really impressed, we know what we need to work on to get better but we don’t really have a way to do this as Free tourneys tend to be against a ragtag group with little to no tactics (this is fine when everyone is a ragtag group).

Trying to get experience just with Paid tourneys will blow all our tickets in about 2 days when we are more likely to lose in Round 1 or 2 and get no tickets for getting that far.

Then we have to grind 5 Free Tourneys! (no challenge and unfair to all the pugs) to get back tickets to have one shot at another Paid.

The system doesn’t support itself very well.

It punishes people for trying to get better by playing against much better teams than themselves with the high ticket cost, then it punishes pugs when the aspiring teams go back to grind tickets for 5 hours.

A middle ground is absolutely what we need.
Free – Ragtag pugs / small group + pug looking to play with tactics beyond 5v5 sPvP.
Advanced – Groups looking to work on tactics vs other groups, adapting to counters, full teamwork, comms and generally advancing themselves.
Paid – Top teams looking to prove themselves against the other top groups, or aspiring groups looking for more of a challenge.

im sure an advanced would get you guys paid ready in under 2 weeks. you would have more tickets plus would now have the skill, strats, and synergy to compete in paids and give every team a run for there tickets.

i hope every player that this will benefit will hop on this and post it so we can get the advanced playlist soon. i have a feeling there is great ppl out there they just need a place to shine without destroying ppl or getting destroyed.

I have to agree with this suggestion. There needs to be an outlet where teams can constantly play another teams, without costing them 5 tickets. We MIGHT run into another premade in a Free tournament. Those are fun matches. But if we don’t run into another premade…. well, we win Gold. There needs to be a system that allows people to practice against other premades, without the chance of running into Pugs.

If people are worried about longer queue times, there is an easy solution: randomize the maps, and make advanced/free tourneys only 2 rounds.

I love this idea, I think it would fix a lot of things that make this game less fun.

I think this is a great idea. sPvP is such a great idea it just needs some finesse to get more people interested in it. Right now, not including paids, I can either play around in the dirty mess that hot joins offer, solo queue free tournaments and just get frustrated with the lack of skill and coordination, or queue with guild members and friends and crush all the pugs in frees. We need that middle group to really practice and improve our skill. Getting more tournament tickets would be nice as well.

Either way something needs to be done as the sPvP portion of this game is very quickly dying. I think the OP ideas and many other ideas in this post are great, easy, ways to give sPvP the boost it needs.

Yup i agreed with all of this. We could also use an advanced playlist it can be made for paids tournaments, having to create a pug every night it’s a pain.

Ezrael is a teammate and I was with him when Sataar told us about this topic.

I think it’s a great idea, but it can get even better if they restrict free tournaments to solo/duo queueing. I see it as the only way to effectively let people experience competitive play without finding a guild or premade team.

The gap is even wider between hot-join matches and free tournaments than it is between free tournaments and paid tournaments. I remember having a good time PUGging when GW2 was just released, and people actually had a fair shot at winning a tournament with a pug team if they communicated through team chat. As it is, it’s downright impossible to even reach Kyhlo when you pug. Whenever my premade team stomps a pug team, all we can think of is “pug life is hard”, because we know how it feels when you’re online without your teammates and just can’t have a good time playing free tournaments.

This change would also help you test builds. If you get into a hot-join match you won’t know for sure whether your build is any good because hot-join play is totally different than tourny’s. Likewise, you can’t pug with your new build because you’ll get stomped everytime and you can’t test it with your premade either as you’ll impact their performance.

I don’t think ANet will improve ticket rewards for tourneys, as we have had long queues since paid tournaments are out and last patch they just NERFED said rewards. I do hope, though, that they make dailies and monthlies more difficult and give us better rewards. Raytek’s suggestion is just perfect to me.

Whatever the case, Anet, please take a good look at this topic because there are many active pvp players here who really care about the health of GW’s spvp.

Just add ranked single match and ranked tournament.

awesome yesterday proved that an advanced class is needed.

zero paids were played all day. we did frees and stomped over 150 random pugs 500-0 we tried to be nice about it and said someday there will be another playlist that will take us away from new ppl. some of them said no more pvp for them.

that is what makes me mad lvl 7 and 10 teams going against us? and then we have ppl in the mist wanting a ladder for a playlist that nobody plays? hoping that the quitters will come back? worry about the 500 ppl in hotjoin all day thats 100 possible teams plus the 500 ppl sitting in the mists all over thats 200 possible teams plus worry about the 1,000 plus in wvw that want to do pvp but hate getting stomped by the greats. thats 400 possible teams on at any givin moment of the day. “give a man a fish or teach a man to fish” i would rather 400 teams get good over hoping 10 players come back to a ladder for a playlist noone q up for

5v5 structured hot join is a good idea in theory except noone does it because no rewards and how do we find ppl to scrim against anyway? an advanced playlist should do that for us this is a game made to be fun not work trying to hopefully find ppl on forums to scrim against.

This is true and I agree with the OP. But what arenanet will say is they are working on it because they are making custom arenas for people to practice and rent out. And the rating system is coming as well and the ladder. So they are working on this idea practically. Don’t get me wrong as I agree with your post, im just stating what they would say if they commented on this post.

i hope they dont respond with they are making custom arenas because that will be just as kittenv5 hotjoin. noone wants to try and find ppl to scrim with for ZERO reward.

This is a great and easy way to help out the PVP. I would think from a programming point of view that the code is already there since they have free’s and paids, so it should be an easy thing to incorporate.

I think this would add a great way for mid tier teams to get good and play against other mid tier teams without the risk of losing something valuable (tickets) along the way.

Yes, teams could sandbag, but I think more often than not you’ll find pre-made teams that aren’t at the elite level playing each other which makes for a much better PVP environment with little to no effort from ANET to get this going.

Would be awesome if a moderator or dev could acknowledge this and maybe agree to send it to the development team to let us know how difficult this would be to implement!
