Average human reaction time.
Look; That’s the style of thieves. That’s pretty much all they can do. They kill light/medium player styles. That is it.
It’s your nemesis, your counter spec. The game is designed like that, and I have nothing against it (I’m a DPS engineer).
Instead of getting frustrated, try to find a thief, a good one (r30+); And start dueling with him, until you find a window of escape.
Practice, Practice, Practice.
Thanks for the input but, sorry. This even being possible is horrible balance. give Thieves something else to stay alive or do damage. 4 shotting someone in 1 second isn’t rewarding for the Thief and sure as hell not for the player.
A single block.
A well timed dodge roll (I’ll admit this one can be hard, but not impossible – if you have a 900 range skill, you wait until it lights up and hit dodge).
Any of your numerous AoE CC’s.Any of these would have absolutely ruined that thief for 45s. Its an all in spec – the thief blows a bunch of CD’s and a bunch of initiative – if it works, the thief probably gets a kill. If it doesn’t, the thief is a free kill.
In fact (in sPvP at least), the spec has been in decline for weeks. It’s extremely easy to counter, and telegraphs it’s attacks from across the battlefield (Dagger pistol is straight up better than D/D at this point. If a thief is running D/D, in most cases the player is either inexperienced, or going for instagib)
Seriously, I’ve been caught with most of this combo (hitting my stunbreaker late, etc), and (playing as a thief) still won the fight, because even with only 20% of my health left, that thief has no tricks left. The instagib player has to hope I screw up and let him catch me with a HS, or the fights over for him.
Please dont theory craft. He obviously broke aegis with an auto attack, then gibbed me in 1 second flat with quickness… and dont play like this doesn’t happen. either you cant do this on a thief, or you have not seen it happen.
Let me ask you a question fxyo…were you fighting the thief 1v1 to start, or did you get hit surprisingly from the back?
The game just started, i had no debuffs what so ever, and it happened as he came out of stealth while i was capping gy. i blinked and honestly decided to stop playing the game for a few days, which i have already.
Learn to play a thief. The moment another thief hits me with Basilisk I shadowstep. The only issue is terrain and bugs.
Due to terrain, some times I can only shadowstep so far, which isnt very far. And due to the Basilisk bug (if you’re still stone colored when you Shadowstep, etc, you cannot dodge roll, so the inevitable Heartseeker spam or tap backstab until you lose stealth or it lands) is what gets me killed against other thieves.
Also, the average is not .3, that’s just the highest. The average is supposedly between .150 – .300 milliseconds. I’ve done a couple test online at times and gotten .2 milliseconds before. Also, the fact it shows heartseeker, unless they had Haste, that alone probably took them some time to land. Me thinks you’re just slow to react.
Do you know why you get .2 on tests? because youre actively waiting for it to happen with a finger hovered over a key. this whole text is completely invalid.
Anyway, whats important these days is that Bruce Lee, when he was alive, could take on 12 people each holding knives, and mop the floor with them. Suck it up Chuck Norris. And lets not forget Tom Cruise and The Last Samurai. This is of dire importance.
please theorycraft more about nothing. this happened on my guardian, what is so hard to believe honestly? i dont spec deep down the toughness tree. and manipulating numbers? why would i intentionally manipulate numbers when i dont even think thieves are imba (which i already stated) and how cant you imagine aegis being procd off an auto attack? you are thinking seriously way too deep for nothing. post reported for actually attemping to call me a fraud when i came here for the good of the game.
My post is about liars, not philosophers; if you want to make a thread and present a case, be serious and truthful, dont lie about the facts. I dont care if its OP or not. Some stuff is OP in my opinion, btw. I dislike HS and perma stealth, its cheese. And BS should be toned down, too. But that doesnt make me post threads with made up facts, that may distort reality beyond the real measure of the problem. This kinda threads pop up every day, mostly put up by newcomers who dont fully grasp the game yet, see the ongoing thread about rallying, for example. And Davinci thread on that and other balance issues.
ill respond to this with a “?” I’ve been playing this game for around 3 months now, and this is the first time i have been globaled. clearly the stars aligned here to do this but the sheer possibility of it happening is unnaceptable… an do not compare me to people who say thieves are op and what nonsence… because theyre not.
i posted this thread to shed light on what is possible inside the game right now and how % values need to be toned down. or else this game will go completely downhill.
Op in your opinion? if some people can reasonably deal with it, then its not OP. I play an engy, i win the bulk of my 1on1s with thiefs. I dont find them OP. But i do think they give newer /more casual players alot of trouble and should be looked at it on that basis.
Hopefully in a way that doesnt impact how they hang in higher end play.
do you win the bulk of running around in circles with thieves after they fail to do 22k damage to you in 1 second and global you? cool, i do too.
Against other thieves, I use my stun break fast enough to not die within one second. Doesn’t matter who the thief is. Obviously mine teleports me, but for other classes they have far more defensive abilities to use after a stun break.
I am sure Mug damage is going to get nerfed for the sake of people like the OP. And it was basically stated in the SOTG.
because of mug, steal is being used as an offensive zerg down skill instead of its intended focus. yeah, because of people like me dude.
This topic again… Do you still have problem with 100b wars too?
Sorry not everyone lives in the world of “I hover my finger over my stun break and auto attack”
Stop trolling, and to answer your question, I can see the warrior. Although yes, the same mechanic also applies. Too much damage in one skill, too little elsewhere. What a kittenty argument. Who the hell is trolling who here? If you don’t have a stunbreaker you can reach within the time span of a thief combo, you should stick to fractals.
im not quite sure you read the 1 second timeframe completely.
you should stick to hooked on phonics.
It really is a anticipation + reflex issue…sorry to burst your bubble. You should also know the thief’s range…learn what 900r is visually.
I play a full glass thief and I RARELY get gibbed…I am able to always shadowstep away unless I have it on cooldown or I had no hp to begin with…
You have to understand that combo you’re talking about is not unstoppable..in fact a simple timed dodge will cancel that combo all together and you’ll force it to be on a 45s cd. Know your positioning also…try your best to always front-face the thief so that he has a harder time getting to your back.
Of course, this comes from experience, anticipation and knowing the class…and a good thief won’t be so predictable about it…
Don’t know what else to say man…every other class has a cc that makes you invuln for 3-4secs…which is plenty of time to eat up the entire combo + heartseekers. You gotta get your reflexes up…
And no I’m not saying this because I main a thief, I also play a few other classes and know how to deal with thieves accordingly…especially if they come head to head.

didn t read the Whole topic just the 1st post.
But that is the most wrong and uninformed thing i ever read….
As a former competitive fighting games player i perfectly know what the reaction time is and it involves:
-Time to recognize something (varies if the thing can be expected or not also doesn t consider the Whole time where the animation is not recognizable)
How easy is to spot the move
-time to plan a reaction
-time to PERFORM the counter (quite high in a game like GW2 unless you consider reaction to be a simple roll).
-latence X2 (depending on netcode)
-possibility of being in mid of an action
-input lag
The thing is well documented professionally for game devs…..and its actually their work not our….as seems in regards of balance this discussion just proofs how unreliable is players opinions…..
P.S. i know most of you just googled reaction test…
That is the most wrong thing you can do…
Reacting pressing ANY button (or the one you know before) when something you expect will happen with any variable possible…is just irrelevant in game reaction time.
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

this actually shows how much you dont know. the ammount of % values in this game is absurd, all % values do is make random numbers sometimes extremely high or low.

no it proves that despite i agree those thing are OP…..your statements were flawed…
Reaction times are way longer than you think in this game…..
Buw when i see people asking me to interrupt ther 1 second skill with my 0,5 second skill it just tells me how most people lacks basics to discuss balance.

improve the game? what about improve yourself? u are playing since 3 months, you said so, here there are ppl who are playing betas and release till august. instead of trying to justify yourself to blame mechanics, why do not you try a little bit more about yourself and your mechanics?

So you actually had the nerve to quote me…and, hilariously, report me!! Ok, lets start with this post first:
→ Do never, and i mean NEVER, understimate the power of Bruce Lee. Some facts about him: did you know that he could take on 12 ppl each holding knives and mop the floor with them?? Did you know that he was a very good dancer? At 18 years of age, he won the 1958 Hong Kong Cha Cha Championship! I just burst into tears of laughter imagining Bruce Lee dancing the cha cha cha!!! With Shakira!! Ahahahah!! Oh God. So much fun.
→ " post reported for actually attemping to call me a fraud when i came here for the good of the game." That was not an attempt at calling you a fraud. It was just me debunking your post and your screenshot. After all, you are a guardian, a bunker, so what better to do to you than debunk you?? (im so good at making intended puns i scare myself. I can clearly see me hosting next year Golden Globes. Watch your back Ricky Gervais, you silly fat kitten !).
→ “why would i intentionally manipulate numbers”… I dont know, you tell me. All i know is that 19k hp and 2959 armor doesnt give way to 6630 heartseekers. And 8047 backstabs when health is above 50% (as it was when you were hit by backstab). And that number was plugged into that death report shot, they dont came with personal stats included. And plz tell me the build and equipment in tpvp where you get 2959 armor with a shield. Alongside 19k hp.
→ You said that Aegis (interesting that only after my post this was brought up, that goes to show how ppl dont even think when they post/critisize) obviously procced after the thief autoattacked you. In Graveyard, of all the available nodes in this game. Out of stealth. And all this without you even noticing the guy. So, he came to UR FACE, autoattacked you TWICE (because daggers first strike is actually a double hit) OUT of stealth (so he was visible, otherwise it would have been a backstab), then he cloaked and daggered you whilst stealing, got invisible again, backstabbed you, and finished you off with heartseeker… while you were basilisked and all this done on quickness… In graveyard, the node with a thousand mile radius where you can land a 747 boeing? And you did not see him coming? In all that gigantic airplane landing zone?
→ “please theorycraft more about nothing”… My theorycrafts are not done in a vacuum. The Cern in switzerland actually stopped all ongoing investigations on Mrs. Higgs Bosom just to read that post. Lots of quantic backstabbing is happening there. I do this in the interest of science. And the good of the game, of course. We are similar in that. That theorycrafting its actually based on facts, formulas known and that you can consult on the oficial wiki (there is a link to it at the top of this page). The figures i presented are taking in account the worst possible scenario for the victim, just so it can encompass any possibilities. However, when you said that the thief removed ur aegis with auto attacks, you have just made it so that assassins signet, if used before the thief came out of stealth, wasted all five attacks with the last one on backstab, leaving heartseeker without that 15% dmg boost… something that i did not include in my first post, where i exposed the numbers in the screenhsot. Quicksand.
My post is about liars, not philosophers; if you want to make a thread and present a case, be serious and truthful, dont lie about the facts. I dont care if its OP or not. Interesting that you quote me in this. Did you know that Bruce Lee was a Major in Philosophy? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. He Majored Philosophy in the Washington University. He focused on the philosophical principles of martial arts. Not only coould he mop the floor with 12 ppl holding knives, he would then proceed to enlighten them in the misteries of the thinking processes behind Kant’s Pure Reason Critique. Or tell them why Nietzche loved Superman.
On topic: i know pretty well all the percentiles this game can produce. Ive been doing this kind of theo since closed beta. Hence why i dont see those numbers compute in a 2959 armor toon. And for you info, i also believe some stuff to be out of the line. My major gripe is heartseeker, its a almost free port skill to target that does almost BS dmg at 25% hp. And contrary to popular belief, it allways does more than auto dmg. I also dislike the ease of D/P stealth, because of its popularity, stealth is going down next patch. And along with it, Mug.
Against other thieves, I use my stun break fast enough to not die within one second. Doesn’t matter who the thief is. Obviously mine teleports me, but for other classes they have far more defensive abilities to use after a stun break.

It’s intention was to aid the burst of a thief. You must not play thief, or have never played one. And like I said, it is being nerfed so don’t worry about it, you will be able to kill a thief soon.
