Current state of classes in PvP

The history of Tempest in 2 sentences:
Concept artists make a epic image of an elementalist summoning a huge storm.
Developer takes that concept and turns it into a heal-bot profession, ruining the class gameplay variety and betraying the no-trinity element of the launch manifesto in the process.
Same with druid. Turn the ranger from a huntsman/warden into a healbot.
Nerf all their heal coefficients so they can’t run offensive builds and have to stack healing power gear.
The problem with Guardians is trap stacking by multiple Guardians. One trapper by himself is fine when you get 2 or more its too easy to insta gib/sand bag people. Thats what needs to be addressed there needs to be diminishing returns if you get hit by 2 of the same kind of trap in a very short time frame the second trap should do substantially less damage. Its skill-less the way it is. Every game I have ever played had diminishing returns like that for stacking powerful aoe skills from different players in pvp eventually.
100% Could also be solved by not having the traps hidden. If there is a red circle, I’ll hesitantly hit it and try to evade or distort or block. If there are 6 circles stacked up I’m not going near it.
A better solution is there could be a time on the trap, i.e. it sticks around for 30 seconds and then fades. Better yet it sticks around for whatever the CD is. That would be even better. Dragons Maw for 90 seconds wouldn’t be bad because it is their elite.
@BlackBeard – I agree that chrono shatter spam is real and is a problem, but I disagree with your solution to that. Instead of increasing the CD of SoIllusions, I would change the active effect to just decrease shatter CD by 50% of their base CD. So if you aren’t running the Illusions line it would cut 25 sec off of Distortion’s CD, 6 sec off of MW’s CD. If you just increase the CD of the skill, it doesn’t stop anyone from using it in CS, and it doesn’t stop anyone from using all of their shatters twice or even 3 times in a row. Decreasing the active effect however does stop people from using all of their shatters twice in a row on core mesmer, or 3 times in a row on chrono. So this is a larger nerf to the optimal utility you can gain from the signet without just increasing the CD of it.
Yeah I support Ori on this, it’s nice when skills can be used more frequently but have weaker effects, instead of longer CDs but stronger effects. The latter just causes 1v1s to be decided based on who was fighting most recently, that’s not fair or fun.
As a chrono, if I enter a fight with Shield 4 on CD I’m screwed. Not a problem for shatters because F1,F2 recharge fast and I start my rotation with either confounding images or blocks, so it takes 5-6 seconds for me to even be ready to shatter. If I enter a fight with nothing on CD I can spend the first 10 seconds blocking nonstop and getting off 3 shatters. Seems pretty OP to me.
Gw2 PvP in 2017 is like: “Guys if everyone is broken that means the game is balanced right?!?!”
Pretty much.
OP’s list is funny. Builds which “play themselves” like DH and warrior are fine, but revenant, which requires actual thought and decision making, is underpowered.
Because getting stab on dodge and a dps rotation consisting of auto attack and precision strike whenever its up is hard to master how?
Lol XD
Yes so loool, so now why dont you plz get to Legendary with a Rev and show me how many more Revs than warriors (and to any other class really) are in it.
What, like the last few seasons when everybody and their dog was playing them because of how broken and faceroll they are?
Interesting that, the moment they dont have their full bag of bullkitten to make them an easy spam one button do it all class with a super easy ride over every bodies grave they evaporate, hmm. Nothing’s changed about Rev’s design. It’s simply been neutered for the moment to take it from the scene.
This has actually been healthy for the game this season.
Revenant has never been a easy one spam button class. What are you talking about? Revenant requires a lot of mechanical skill to play and is one of the harder classes to play because you have to manage a lot of things to play Revenant.

You don’t need gear in PvP. Also, Druid isn’t a healbot in PvP, it can do massive damage in the PvP scene. You guys need to understand YOU ARE NOT FORCED TO RUN THE META, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO RUN META. You can run a build that suits to your preference. I REPEAT, NO ONE FORCES YOU TO RUN META. Now please, enough of these replies I want to see people’s opinions on what should be nerfed/buffed around classes.

What does this have to do with SoIllusions?

The gear exists in pvp, it’s just that the stats are condensed into an amulet.
Just because it’s SPVP doesn’t mean the coefficients changed to not need as much healing power.
And druid does jackkitten damage. Druid specialization is a DPS loss from core ranger. I don’t even know how you can bother arguing this.
What big damage are you talking about, LB2, a reflectable 100b that can be negated by one dodge frame?
Power druid/ranger sustained damage is garbage, its weapons have abysmal autoattack DPS. The burst is slow and heavily telegraphed.
The most potent and persistent builds for ranger have always been condi bunker builds because rangers don’t pay a pet tax on condition damage.
Conditions do the same damage for ranger as they do other classes.
Ranger power weapons outside longbow all have incredibly low power and base damage coefficients due to the existence of the pet, even though it has been shown in ample testing that the pets are a minuscule, poorly scaling portion of ranger damage that doesn’t compensate for the coefficient/base value deficits.

Except that the double resistance War you are fighting will shrug it all off with damage immunity. Or if it happens to be a dh, block and immune it all.
There’s also that tried and true defense to shatters: dodge.
Chrono has one, count them, one “good” build. That build is reliant on pretty much everything in it. A nerf would very likely put chrono out of the game.
Beside that, Mesmer takes significant skill to play. You really can’t just face roll.
Yes, Mesmer can hit hard if it’s well played AND timed to get around the enemy’s defense. A vault thief learned that lesson from me a few minutes ago. That’s a skill factor though, unlike some of the other builds out there.

Rangers have tons of damage that they can dish out with their weapons and pets. You don’t have to run meta. How many times do I have to say it, YOU DONT HAVE TO RUN THE kittenING META. Jesus guys get that through your head, ITS NOT A REQUIREMENT TO RUN THE META. If you want to roll a damage dealing ranger/druid go ahead and do it, you don’t need to run meta.

People can run also a mender thief who try to bunker a point with the healing signet….still we don’t see stuff like that

lmao someone hasn’t been in this game for very long. Who’d you use your level 80 boost on bro
Necro: I think minions need a 15% increase in attack speed (or damage), and 20% increase in health in pvp and wvw. Ignoring all of the other minion issues line tracking, not attacking, etc, this would help a bit too keep them up to date with the power creep. Axe could use a 3person cleave imo, staff marks should deal more damage for the longer cd ones but not by much. Also the staff auto makes me cringe.
For thief: I agree it’s not in a bad place right now, but it would be good to make other weapons as viable as dp. Sword needs help. Dd maybe could use something bit could leave; I’d think buff cnd range just slightly. I’d like to see a stealth on staff 2,3, or 4, but may be hard to do without making it op.
Guardians- I feel like are a bit op with how much blocking, healing they can do while also pumping out the damage. Maybe it’s just me but I feel the team with the most guardians usually wins. Decrease trap damage slightly, no more than 10 percent, and make them visible.
Engi- as annoying as they are I think they are in a good place.
Eles-mostly in a great place. Not sure about one build that cleanses conditions super quickly and heals like crazy, I don’t play it so I don’t know too much about it, but if it has counters then leave it.
Revenants- probably can carefully buff it. I hand run into a couple revs that were really good and gave me a run for my money, so without playing it myself, it could be partially a l2p issue but I feel like it could use some small buffs here and there without going crazy like it was at one point.
Mesmers-I still think it’s crazy how much stealth that have. Stealth plus clones is a bit much imo, and would be like if thieves could use their auto attack in stealth. The rest of it seems pretty much in a good spot tho. Chrono could also take a closer look at, maybe turn down a hair if at all. Maybe less blocks.
Rangers: I feel like overall is in good shape, but a couple aspects could be buffed while others just slightly turned down.

LOL clones do no damage.
Thief auto does more DPS than any mesmer ability or any intitiative skill on any thief weapon.

Tempest is in an OK spot. It takes some good skill rotation to stay alive, and 1v1 you don’t die but also don’t kill anything. Need a little more damage, a little less heal.
this is just the sentence that shows that ele(and engi) is not ok for pvp, pvp should be matter of action and reaction not cycling a skill rotation wile runing in circles

Not all builds work, but it doesn’t mean you can’t make your own build that fits your play style. You have to remember, 90% of it is on the person behind the screen, and builds are only 10% of it.

Yes! yes yes yes!…and where are your videos showing this build variety?
You keep shouting from distance..but nothing to back up your arguments
If it where up to me i would just remove PI from the trait list and add it onto certain abilities.
Like swords steath attack
staff stealth attack
IP daggers (if you rupt)
Bandits defense (kick, if you interuppt)
S wire, again if you rupt
s/p 3 is debatable i guess (i can see arguments for both sides)
it would not work on headshot, B/v or Steal.
A bit harder to use, while it would be a bit less spammable, and if the thief is spamming PI abilities at least they all have diffrent animations (easier to dodge)
The problem is AOE healing + far to many boon’s. the Rips are working great for thieves but the sheer amount of aoe healing is making it hard for other set’s to become meta. alot of thieves are using PI to give the extra kick vs these specs.
(tired of typing so if you want to see what i’m talking about roll s/d staff and go to a team fight)
Engineer: Don’t know about you guys, but Engineer has no problems with me at all, can’t think of anything that would be nerfed/buffed. In my honest opinion, it’s in a very great spot at the moment with high damage and high support with that amazing Rezz power.
Well you said it. Great DPS along with defensive capabilities and support. Let’s not forget scrapper’s hammer that has both damage and a secondary strong effects that are used in defense or mobility, very versatile and bunkerish. This seems quite a bit over the top.
+ a passive life-saver.

I made this thread for people to talk about class balancing, not for people to Q.Q. over build variety. I won’t lie and try to argue, yes almost the entire player base runs meta because of metabattle.com but that doesn’t mean you can’t create your own build that you can run as well. It will require you a little bit more skill to do this, but it is doable. Remember, much of it is in skill level of the player not the build itself. If you are a good player, I’m sure you can make a build that you created work.

Maybe nerf it’s sustain a tad bit then, but overall Engineers really don’t cause any balance problems in the current meta. If focused hard in a teamfight they can go down and be killed.

I already discussed which I honestly think is a great counter to pulmonary. Add an internal cooldown to the trait that gives Pulmonary in the Daredevil tree which is Impacting Disruption. This way, thieves cant spam headshot or interrupt abilities and get spam PI.
Ranger: With Celestial Avatar getting nerfed and having that 15 second cooldown time, I really have found no problems with Rangers, they have an excellent spot in the meta. Well, except for one tiny thing. The Signet of the Wild glitch. If you don’t know, when you activate Signet of the Wild, it does unblockable damage for a time. It’s a bug/glitch because ArenaNet never officially put it in their balance patch notes, and it’s been a glitch for a while now. I’m hoping ArenaNet fixes that bug or glitch, unless they actually intended to implement that into the game.
I would actually like for a developer to answer this question. I’m really curious if the Signet of the Wild glitch is going to be in the game now permanently or is it a thing that developers still haven’t fixed?

Elementalist: Another class that’s in a great spot right now in the meta. People thought it would die due to Cleric’s Amulet being taken out, but Elementalist is still the king of team support. Can think of 0 changes to Elementalist as well as of right now.
Loads of crap..eles have been using the same set up for the last 1.5 year, all it changed is the amulet and the class got noticeably weaker..to a point where nobody consider you a threat anymore…merely an annoyance
P.S stupid me XD I keep forgetting the main rule of MMOs : what can’t kill me or endanger me is in a good spot and it’s balanced how could I possibly forget that?

Helseth’s recent tournament had a good amount of variety i felt. not huge sure, but a few builds for each class. they even felt a team would be better with staff thief at sone point.
tbh, this game really shines in 5v5 w teams.
anet should just add 5v5 arena with large rewards.
people would end up using LFG & guildies for teams just like any group content. good rewards would encourage lots of lower teir players to get involved.

I have said this is DH meta when S3 and S4 already.
I can see the next season NOW, lol.
This is NOT a balance problem , BUT—-
If there have 2-6 DH in every match. What do you feel?

a team mode filled with LFG groups is a bad idea, its only a farmplace for stablished teams like mixed q, if as the forum says its not enough population for a permanent team q, they may try a limited time team q like weekend tournaments or peak time mini tournaments or whatelse, but not force to fill a mode with lfg pugs
Look at the classes that are being stacked in each match of ranked play. This is where you find the problems in GW2 PvP.
Going class by class like people are doing is just pretty much voicing your own bias at this point in time. While I appreciate the OP creating this thread, the true identifier of which classes are OP is how often they are stacked. Remember now that the only reason we don’t see stacking in the pro leagues/tournaments is because they are not allowed. If they were we’d see LOTS of stacking there.
So let’s see which classes are getting stacked everyday in ranked play

is an LFG pug group really so bad? is it really worse than solo & four randoms?
you can choose a comp, & can fill it out with good players if you know people.
population being an issue is speculation at this point. good rewards would incentivise playing w teams, & could cause the scene to grow.
i’d like to see a 5man mode as well as what we have now, either 5 man queue or tournaments.

You keep insulting people saying :" if you’re a good player you could make it work", if you’re that much better than us….PROVE IT WITH A LINK NO EMPTY TALK ‘cause that’s all you’re been using so far…empty talk
Ceimash was able to get to legend just by using core necromancer without Reaper.
I can do the same thing on Necro as well. Sure, it requires a lot more skill and is harder but it isn’t impossible and it is DOABLE. S/F Fresh Air Eles on EU have gotten to Legend. Sizer who plays S/D thief and not meta HAS GOTTEN TO LEGEND. Maygi on NA who plays D/D condi thief HAS GOTTEN TO LEGEND. Core LB power rangers have gotten to legend, burn guardians have gotten to legend, Revenants who run Mallyx instead of Shiro have gotten to legend. Do I need to list anymore for you to get the point? And i’m not insulting anyone, it is a FACT not an OPINION its a FACT that if you are highly skilled enough you can make a build that you created work. As for elementalist, the support build is only RECOMMENDED to be ran, does it mean you are mandatory to run it? Absolutely not. Stop with your Q.Qing and putting salt on this thread that I made so that ArenaNet can get ideas off to balance their classes. Unless you have something informative to say rather than Q.Q all day then say it, but if you don’t leave.

Fact: none of those builds are used in actual competitive play.
Opinion: none of those builds are viable in actual competitive play.
Dream Scenario
Hello, Tyrians! Big changes are coming to PvP Leagues for Season 6, and we’re excited to reveal what we’ve been working on. Our goal for Season 6 is single-fold: we’re eliminating passive-procs in PvP in an effort to create a more competitive environment. In short, expect to see major nerfs to automatic stun breaks like Tempest Defense and Retaliatory Subconscious and passive defensive skill traits like Self-Regulating Defenses and Defy Pain.
Sure, these nerfs will be felt hardest by players with less skill, but KITTEN ’EM!
Also, we took PvE Rewards out of PvP.

I don’t blame you for using soloq examples..that’s all you have really.
Core necro, fresh air ele, burn guard… you run completely useless builds just to satisfy your ego…in the end you’re running useless builds
2v2 tournie https://www.twitch.tv/videos/118746555
Do you see any core necro or fresh air?…NO, so where else are you useful?
Team support?Mobility?..http://imgur.com/a/GG8j9....Nope you can’t do this either, so you’re running a build that is not good at duelling, not good at support others and it’s one of the slowest…still you think of deserving legendary this even more certify that every goon can reach legendary..with the correct amount of luck.
You reach legendary with a sub-par build not because you’re more skilled than the rest, not because you use the next messiah build…you’re simply hell a lot lucky to have “unskilled grunts” like me who “merely” cover for your absence
I’m just your average gamer, I just play long enough to reach a target..then I quit every season, till the next one http://imgur.com/a/f3PlT.
You run a sub-par build thinking to be the next hot thing…guess what?!..You’re not by a long mile. Core necro > Reaper? What do you bring to the table? have you got something similar to “chil to the bone”…nope
Fresh air> Meta ele? What do you bring to the table?…You’re slower than a thief/mesmer/rev…..you do less burst…you’re less survivable..but supposedly your “superior skill” will cover for all this….sure..sure
You run fresh air ele : you can’t 1vs1 anyone at equal skill level, you do less burst than most other classes, you move way slower than other burst classes…

Good topic, I would like to add that all those who propose nerf and buff tell us what is your mmr, and in another post a dev said that it would be a great help because at different levels can be contrasted better.
I hope you really read this post the devs and leave no more professions or useless features.
With the season almost at an end, I would like to say thanks to everyone that contributed to this thread. Hopefully we can get some more great ideas on this thread about what classes to buff/nerf, also I would like to yell out
Please, any ArenaNet developer, come take a look at this thread and get some ideas off of the community that plays PvP. Thank you!
