[Discussion] Future of PvP Blog
i am pretty disappointed with the “tons of news”.
no comment about other game-modes, no comment about implementing “guild-wars” into guildwars2. i had looked forward to this news, had hoped that the news will make me log into gw2 again and really enjoy it. i am tired of playing games with vertical-gear-progression-threadmills, hamsterwheels, grind, and no pvp. time to move on.
I understand it’s not an easy task to rethink pvp ranks, but the people who will benefit the most from making /rank finishers unique and unnobtainable anymore will actually be the worst offenders…
That sure tastes like a sour reward for 5.4k games played since launch…
That’s it? That’s the revealing blog post of PvP news I’ve been waiting for? oO
Who even cares about rewards at this stage of capture-the-point-boredom, seriously? It’s just not fun to play, no matter what rewards you get or don’t get from it.
I’ll be back the day GvG or something like Heroes Ascend gets implemented… no patience for this anymore.
The games I play on my phone have more “guild wars” content than this sad parody of its name.

And about this?
Also in this update, the Skills and Balance team will introduce new healing skills to the game. To acquire new skills, in both PvP and PvE, players will need to spend skill points to unlock them. Unlocking the skill unlocks it for all parts of the game. Going forward newly added skills will require skill points. Existing skills will remain unlocked for PvP.
So, where is the equality and liberty of PvP in the game? If this happens the game will be broken.
I suppose this is a start, but I was hoping for more info about improving the quality of pvp (and new modes, etc.) rather than just info about bridging the gap with PvE.

2 questions:
1) any use of salvaging all our items that we still get from the chests, are arcane powders, slivers, orbs still usefull in the upcoming patches
2) so these ladders are months away, not really worried about that but im wondering would you implement ladders also for like a new game type like arenas and will they be seperated from the current conquest mode?
Thanks in advance

Even as a mainly PVE/WvW player I can see the problems most of these changes will cause.
Changes are interesting. I am looking forward to trying them out. Meanwhile, I am still waiting on Capture the Flag and 2v2/3v3 arena.
I may like most of the changes you want to have here, although I have some reserves and am waiting for more informations.
One thing I dislike though is the new ranks. Even now I’m not a fan of the current rank system and never was a fan of ranks, leagues, etc.
I always felt like it just made a lot of people care about it too much and become angry about playing (It happened to me too, where if I lost, and lost some ranks it really upset me). The last game I had (granted it was a month ago I think), someone yelled at everyone for almost making him lose some ranking (we won 500-250).
This happened in everygame where a ranking system was visible, be it in LoL,GW2,etc.The system I really liked the most is the one there is atm in Dota 2. Everyone plays in the same queue, there’s no visible indicator of your MMR and I find it much more enjoyable. Sure there’s always some ragers as in every competitive game, but I found that there were a lot less, people usually played for fun and you still had a MMR to play against people of your same skill bracket.
I may be oldschool with these kind of thoughts seeing most of the games implementing a rating, but I feel like it’s the best way to have fun while still remaining competitive.
Ugh I can agree with this. Ladders are great and all for 1v1 games, but give people a team to kitten at and things go downhill quick. I don’t necessarily mind the trash talk and rage when it is just ppl wanting to win for winnings sake, but “public”/visible rankings seem to bring out the worst in people.
Showing what league somebody is in usually is fine because people generally understand there is variance and losing a game won’t kick them down an entire tier
Before you are able to transfer PvE skins into PvP, make sure, there are PvP way for getting EVERY existing skin.
Otherwise, you will be able to get “better” (looking) skins for PvP via PvE, or at least, faster.

I want to talk here about the upcoming plans of ANet what they want to make with SPvP in the future …
Even knowing, that it has been stated in the blog, that alot of those thigns can change over the course of time or get delayed, many questions did rise up in my head, as also thoughts about how i think those mentioned points could be improved better, or should be improved to be better said.
Anet is intending to integrate SPvP more as a basic gameplay mode, that fells beign more connected with the rest of the game.
Thats fine and good, but I think there are also alot of things, that may not be to be forgotten, before those changes will find their ways into the game.
Making SPvP in general more rewarding is absolutely something that I totally support, because the current SPvP really feels very unrewarding compared to PvE and WvW, absolutely is unattractive for a pure PvE Player, because it feels like a huge grind more or less to participate in SPvP, always doing the same boring kinds of battles that are always based on the same mechanics of base conquering and holding to make points basically.
SPvP definetely needs more various play modes with different gameplay styles, rewards need to be more, than just only equipment skins, they need to be something, that will be also very useful for PvE/WvW. Cross Mix Rewards so to say.
But I will come now directly to the first point, where I disagree with, which shouldn’t be changed/removed, but rather be tweaked and improved to remove repetitive boring grind out of the current systems.
The Glory/Rank System
Don’t just remove Glory to let Gold replace it as universal currency.
Make out of Glory are more useful curreny with better rewards, by merging Glory together with Karma.
So instead of earning Karma for doing for example dynamic Events, we get rewarded isntead with Glory, which can then be used in PvE same as like in PvP.
No need to make out of Gold a super universal currency for all play modes.
This would be a horrible change for the game economy, if players could also earn Gold in PvP. People are instead wanting you to improve fora long time, since you nerfed karma, to improve the ways of obtaining it.
So why not make it possible to get basically Karma, as the renamed merged Glory, through playing SPvP. Imo that would make absolutely the most sense, because both currencies work very similar and mean basically also the same.
There need to be more unique rewards through playing SPvP
, things that you want to buy with Glory constantly.
Glory should be used to increase your PvP Rank and the rank System should stay exactly the way it works now. Theres no need to completely remove it for some silly leaderboards nobody has ever asked for and even if so, you can also implement leaderboards just without removing completely the Rank System giving alot of players unique titles for free just so that they don’t make a kittenstorm here in the forums and are pleased…
The Glory/Rank System in SPvP should work very similar like a mixture of the WvW Rank System and the Luck System.
Means, the Rank of SPvp should be limited to just 80 Levels, but instead go like WvW to a maximum of 9999.
Increasing in PvP Rank shouldn’t take more and more Glory each level up proportionally, because it feels like inhumanous grind.
Its much better, when PvP Ranks are easy to obtain at the start and then just like WvW Rank Ups, you alays need the same amount of Glory to raise in your PvP Rank.
Changing the SPvP Rank System basicalyl to the same system, like WvW works, you can improve with the same move also the rewards for playing SPvP, if you get for every rank up a reward chest that can include various things, from randomous equipment and weapon skins over to items, that can be useful for WvW/PvE and if it realyl must be, ten also gold..people should get if at all Gold from PvP only, if they rank up, not for winning matches.
Removing ranks from the game is a terrible idea. I know myself included with many friends are considering leaving the game if this change is implemented. We have been playing pvp since launch and are proud of all our ranks, and now we will no longer be able to work on it, and all we have to show is a finisher? Jokes.
Part 2)
Following things should be rewards for Glory and ranking up in SPvP through Rank Reward Chests similar to WvW Rank Reward Chests
Glory should be used in SPvP, to unlock for your Character new Skills.
When entering PvP with a Character, the Charactershould be just Max Level and start with a free Weapon Set of Choice andMax Trait Points.
More Weapon Sets are then rewards, that players can buy with Glory.
So higher the Rank of the Player, so more Equipment Set Skins become avaiable to buy with Glory.
Each bought with Glory Equipment Skin becomes unlocked for your account’s “Dress Room” in your personal Home Instance/in the PvP Locker and can be duplicated from those two points as oftenly as you like. This counts only for created Item Skins, that have been unlocked with Glory. Not for Skins/items with Skin X, which have been crafted or dropped as loot ect.
This will incentivize People to play SPvP for Glory to unlock faster Equipment KSins for the Account, because by playing SPvP, people would get rewarded with Glory like x times better (especially with Glory Booster), than people, that play PvE/WvW and make dynamic events, where Glory rewards just would scale up by the difficulty of the map and the difficulty of the dynamic event/dungeon ect.
So Glory would be basically in SPvP, what Skill Points are for characters in PvE.
This would make also GW2 again a bit more similar like GW1, where PvP Players also had to earn themself new skills for PvP to use by getting Balthazar Points to unlock Skills for PvP usage. The absolute same way should work Glory for GW2 too.
Because unlocking skills for PvP feels like a reward! Same like it feeels like a reward, if you unlock a new skill for your character in PvE.
And for those, which don’t want to do the work, you can put again into the ingame Shop as an account Upgrade a buyable PvP SKill Pack, which just unlocks instantly all Skills for your account for PvP usage, if you just don’t want to work for your skills in PvP.
As mentioned, Weapon/Equipment Skins should be buyable with Glory, also including the Shop Armors, for naturally very high amounts of Glory, together with specific SpvP Rank Requirements that have to be met first to make those Items appear in the Glory Shop in SpvP to be able to finde these thigns also for sell with very high Glory Prices that fit for not having to use Gems as an effort.
Finishing Moves should be buyable with Glory, temporary as permanent ones.
Implement please finally a Skill Reskin System, that lets us alterate the ways of how our Skills look like. You want instead of a red fireball a Blue Fireball, that looks more similar to the Ghosts of Ascalon skinned skills? Make it happpen Anet, Please and let us buy those Skill Reskins with Glory to help us to make our characters more unique and individual as a part of visual Character Progression (includes Skill Reskins also, that make Skins look more epic/dangerous, than normal)
I know you can do this. And its also again something that could be perfectly used for the Ingame Shop to make money with too, just like the different Finishing Move Skins.
Glory should be used to buy with it Booster Items, like Exp Boosters, WvW Exp Boosters, Strength, Armor/ Magic Find Boosters ect.
they all could be buyable for Glory and if this would be the case, I’m sure alot more of peopel would play SPvP, with more rewards like this to buy with Glory, which are useful also in the other play modes.
Part 3:
Ranks and their special Finishers unlocked through a WvW Rank like System
PvP Ranks earned like WvW Ranks, each PvP Rank requiring like 5000 Badges of Honour. Badges of Honor become rewards that you could receive with Glory either, or also receive as Match Rewards… you know it .. GLORY & HONOR (they belong together!)
If you change the PvP Rank system to a system, that works like the WvW Rank Systwem, you can use the WvW Rank-System to integrate all of the currently existing Rank Finishers and even have more than enough space left for higher regions to implement into the future new Rank Finishers.
At the moment we have these:
Rabbit, Deer, Dolyak, Wolf, Tiger, Bear, Shark, Phoenix, Dragon
Why don’t make it like this:
SPvP Rank 0-50 = Frog
SPvP Rank 51-150 = Rabbit
SPvP Rank 151-250 = Deer
SPvP Rank 251-500 = Dolyak
SPvP Rank 501-750 = Wolf
SPvP Rank 751-1000 = Bear
SPvP Rank 1001-1250 = Tiger
SPvP Rank 1251-1500 = Falcon
SPvP Rank 1501-1750 = Cobra Snake
SPvP Rank 1751-2000 = Dolphin
SPvP Rank 2001-2500 = Scorpion
SPvP Rank 2501-3000 = Owl
SPvP Rank 3001-3500 = Manta Ray
SPvP Rank 3501-4000 = Gorilla
SPvP Rank 4001-4500 = Hornet
SPvP Rank 4501-5000 = Tarantula
SPvP Rank 5001-6000 = Orca
SPvP Rank 6001-7000 = Gryphon
SPvP Rank 7001-8000 = Unicorn
SPvP Rank 8001-9000 = Ninetailed Fox
SPvP Rank 9001-9998 = Phoenix
SPvP Rank 9999 = Dragon
Part 4)
Now I want to mention some things I find good about the planned changes:
——-
First, I find it very good, that you make changes, that will allow you to balance better the rewarding and to reward through these changes better plyers with builds, which usually don’t get so much points, like players with specific other builds.
Secondly I find it very good that you make some changes to the PvP Titles, even if I think thats way more than not enough to make just only some slight balancing changes to just only the Slayer and Conqueror Title …
All of those PvP/WvW Titles/achievements needs some really heavy reworking/redesigning and improvements to make these things feel more rewarding and remove some epitomic grind out of this game, that is way beyond being ridiculous with titles, that you can’t basically ever reache in a humans life time!! ANd thats a huge issue, that we are telling you Anet already since the release of this game.
Seriously, what takes so long to change some titles and their corresponding achievements in PvP/WvW???
The next good thing about the changes for me personally is the removal of this silly outdated splitting between PvP Equipment and PvE Equipment.
There should be no splittign basically between PvE and PvP… instead the PvP needs to be splitted up in Level Districts. Every Player shoukld just land with their Character into the fitting Level District, that is the same like the Level of the Character with that you enter SPvP, where you will always still meet on players with Characters on the exact same level like your Character.
This will enrich PvP, because then this Game would not only have High Level PvP with maxed out Characters only, but then this game would provide also Low Level PvP, which could end up quite differently and could also be very interesting to see PvP Battles with lesser developed characters, that don’t have full access to all the traits.
Low Level Characters could then gain as rewards in pvP Matches also experience to rise up in the Level Districts, or you just go out with your character into PvE and gain Levels there and the next time you enter SPvP again with your leveled up character, you land automaticall again in the new Level District, that fits to your new Character Level, when you return. Its basicalyl the same system like, before, but with 1 big important difference. – its way more Flexible and opens up as said also an interestign option for low level pvp, which would be surely a completely different experience, than the current PvP with only maxed out perfect characters.
PS: I hope this WoT helps, and will be some kind of inspiration for you Anet to make up fior the right decisions and maybe reiterate something of your plans…

There are many good things to look forward to but a few ideas that I don’t get.
First, removing ranks seems like a pointless change. Let people work towards them and earn those finishers as a “long term” type of goal – to demonstrate how long you’ve played the game. I’m not seeing a good reason to remove content already in the game that doesn’t hurt anyone. The only problem with ranks is that most rewards are locked behind the almost endless rank grind where it takes forever to earn any decent gear. If that’s being changed then there’s no reason to remove them.
Secondly, having to earn skill points for PvP skills makes no sense to me. The entire point of sPvP is that you go in and you are set for PvP, with everything unlocked. That’s part of the selling point of this game’s PvP versus the boring grinding in other MMO PvP modes. Most people are probably swimming in skill points but this removes potentially game changing choices away from new players and is, in principle, against the spirit of sPvP. Leave that for PvE and WvW.
I posted this in another thread, but it belongs here too.

My most recent match: 500 to 83. With a ragequitter to top it off.
It doesn’t matter what the rest of the plans are for PvP. Until they fix this, it will be avoided by 95% of the playerbase, and for good reason.
Even with good rewards I do not feel like participating when I get my butt handed to me on an ongoing basis, and have to deal with fair-weather teammates to boot.

On the fence about this myself. I played GW so I’m familiar with unlocking everything in a structured and balance oriented version of pvp. After unlocking every skill for my pvp only characters I looked back and thought how pointless it was. I would have rather have had everything unlocked like here from the get go but understood the reason why it was. That system later included any additions like inscriptions. Then came the PvE only skins which I thought were a nice addition even though I hardly used any.
Using skill points to unlock skills is ok for pve, but what about those players who only spvp? If they can’t earn skill points at the same rate then I see a problem.
It’s already a problem having skill points as a currency to craft many of the money makers. Skill points used in crafting would be ok with me personally if it weren’t 50 here, 200 there. Right now I don’t think we need to be pulled in another direction if we play all aspects of the game. Then again, since they introduced the scrolls, if you champ farm you won’t notice this being a big issue.
Just wondering how it’s going to work for those who spvp only and for those who play all aspects of the game. If I unlock in pve do I get the skills for spvp and vice versa. I generally gain a skill point every dungeon or so, I hope the rate at which spvp only players gain skill points is the same. Guess I’m just not clear on how skill points will be handled for spvp only players.
