There are so many things wrong with the answers given regarding eles in the recent SotG that I barely know where to begin. Everything they say is such a giant contradiction that by the end I was starting to wonder if it was a joke. Here’s a brief rundown:

“Speaking specifically… of cantrip ele”

Ok, cantrips are WAY to make or break for us eles, to the point that no other utilities hold a candle. I would hope for a buff of other utilities to compensate however.

“We don’t want to overdo it so we made smaller changes”

Nice, very reasonable. It’s definitely a good idea to tweak things slowly since large changes while adding counters (eg boonhate) and buffing other classes at the same time can have massive and unpredictable results in a meta that is already learning to deal with bunker eles.

“…however some of them are actually somewhat big.”

Ah, so the previous statement was a lie. Good to know.

“This is a BIG change… the elementalist is going to no longer be able to use utility skills while mist-formed.”

So let me get this straight… in order to nerf cantrip eles, you are making it so we can no longer use utilities in mist form. I’m sincerely dumbfounded. How in god’s name does this make any sense whatsoever? Why on earth would a cantrip ele want to use another cantrip while in mist form, other than to cleanse conditions (which is being nerfed anyways). On the other hand, now you can no longer use arcane wave or glyph of storms or whatever while in mist form… so non-cantrip eles are harmed while cantrip eles are unaffected.

The major thing though is that you can no longer use the utility heal in mist form… seriously? This hurts non-bunker builds FAR more than bunker builds, since non-bunkers don’t have access to as much healing through other means and thus NEED to be able to get off a heal, considering our game-worst hp and armor. Another misguided nerf.

“Ride the Lighting… it goes up to a 40, but if you actually hit somebody with it it’s just going to be a 20”

Why, just why. What are you guys thinking, 40 seconds?! Being mobile and able to disengage easily is a VERY necessary component for our class, and one of the reasons why offhand dagger is our only viable option. I’ll repeat, ele has the GAME-WORST armor and hp-pool, and if we can’t get away or heal we can get bursted down incredibly fast. Non-bunker builds are harmed even more by this nerf since they don’t even have much healing to compensate for the lack of mobility.

More importantly, our roaming is now crippled. I hate being a bunker guarding one point all day, so thankfully rtl allowed me to get to other points relatively quickly. Now however we will have some of the worst non-combat mobility in the game.

And let’s not even talk about PvE/WvW… I shudder at the thought.

Me during early launch days..I thought the earth was good until thye made it (or i realised) that it blinds once like 3 sec :P
Plus i think water chills if it hits somebody..doesnt hit often enough for me to notice
I think rtl out of combat needs to remain at 20 sec..No point harming wvw and pve folks for our sins ..disengange and roaming are different things.A warrior was always the better roamer compared to ele but he definately had less disengage options.Now that this difference is somewhat lessen theres no point harming roaming for ele as well.
And of course in spvp maps are small so it doesnt matter that much..in wvw though?

They mentioned that you “could” use more cantrips. However this seems to be more to do with ether renewal and using their heals in mist form to lower their survivability.

They did say this was the intention, even the invulnerability it gives for survivability is much better than most if not all other stun breaks.

They actually specifically said in SotG that the ele’s mobility is too high for what it can do. An incredibly mobile bunker does not allow for good “play”. They also mentioned that the cooldown for it had a chance to drop down to 20 when used offensively, but when used as mobility and node harass its availability has gone down. This falls in line with what they were intending and I do not see a problem with it.

When you complain about mobility at least make it reasonable, necros need to take a utility to get swiftness or use the nearly out of use warhorn. Rangers have access to swiftness out of combat only through warhorn (P.Rangers), but make use of a leap on sword to be slightly faster than base movement. To be honest the only class that still is faster than an elementalist is a thief, which does not give you room to complain. The only thing that has really changed is you may actually have to think about when you use RTL instead of use whenever it is up, and to me that means better play will prevail.

Ice storm doesn’t chill it causes bleeding used to be confusion.

Every ele uses it, it’s op.

Them eles need to step their game up and start using Conjure Earth Shield, I recently learned you can Kite away from them in fortify but its still an insta-kill.

Should be the same as Frost bow. Then it won’t suck.

You’ll have to forgive me, since taking Glyph of Storms over Conjure Ice bow (if you had to choose) is so crazy to me I must’ve forgotten the difference between the two.

haha i see what you did there
I took it for the blind in earth and cause yolo and stuff.
I also used to take bow and flash ,cast deep freeze from miles away and then port next to the target before the skilled fire off..trolling people in hot joins :P

Hmm I read on reddit that the warrior’s adept major trait ,empowered, is being buffed to 3% a boon, making it stronger than our grandmastor minor trait which only gives 2% a boon :p I know wars need buffs and all for spvp, but it still seems strange to me…

Anyway, I’m just gonna hope for some recompensation buffs for now and see what happens. It certainly won’t be the worst we’ve been hit by at any rate.

Lol, ok, let’s break this down:

Cantrips- sure, they’re great; however, the arcane abilities are also very good. Each of them deals a ton of damage via crits, with one of them being a blocking skill that is very nice. I think that ANet is trying to make other utilities viable, which is why they’re nerfing cantrips. Also, certain Conj weapons can also be very good.

Changes- stating that you’re making some “somewhat big” changes doesn’t contradict the idea that you’re making some small changes as well.

Mist form, utilities- Ohz noez, you can’t hit people (via arcane skills) while remaining invulnerable any more? You can’t heal, even though you already are able to switch to the water attunement for a heal (I think) and can grab vigor and regen from going into mist form anyways? You poor, poor thing. Anyhow, there are various reasons why an ele might want to use another cantrip while in mist form. Perhaps they want to add more regen or vigor. Perhaps they just want to get as far away as possible, and, in the heat of the moment, use LF as well. There are infinitely many reasons that I can come up with.

RTL- you’re not supposed to be a mobile class. I’m sorry, but that’s just how the game is meant to be designed. You’re supposed to be a versatile, flexible class that can swap between DPS, support, and buffing and debuffing enemies and allies. ANet, of course, doesn’t want to see eles become completely motionless, but their design never intended for eles to be mobile. If you want a mobile class, roll a thief, a ranger, or just use whatever class you have to the fullest extent that you can to get as much mobility out of it as possible. Also, sorry for the wake-up call, kiddo, but eles have wonderful healing. You can just swap attunements for a small heal, use a single attack, and boom, you’ve just reclaimed 6K+ health. Then you can switch to earth and be very difficult to kill.
