I’ll start out by saying that I love Guild Wars and have loved the game since GW1 beta. However, Guild Wars 2 leaves a lot to be desired. I’m not saying that the game itself is bad there are just some key features that have been left out that shouldn’t be left out. I’m speaking in terms of PVP because I have actually heard the PvE in Guild Wars 2 is actually really good. Yet, the game is called Guild Wars, so where exactly are these guilds at war? And what are these guilds as well as players really fighting for?
In GW1 there were four types of structured PvP Heroes Ascent, Team Arenas/Random Arenas, GvG, and alliance battles Each type of PvP gave you a different type of rank. Heroes Ascent gave you PvP rank, GvG gave your guild rank as well as you GvG rank, Team Areans/Random Arenas gave you Gladiator rank ect…. So your rank in each category would depend upon your skill/time spent playing in each category.
In contrast, GW2 has 2 types of structured PvP, 5v5 tournament PvP, and WvW, which is similar to the alliance battle type of PvP for GW1. 5v5 PvP tournament play is the only highly competitive type of structured PvP in GW2. Meaning that it is the only type of PvP that can give GW2 a shot in the world of E-Sports. However, this type of PvP as I said in the beginning of this post leaves a lot to be desired.
5v5 tournament PvP should give you a rank separate from the glory system rank because right now there is nothing separating ranking from that side of structured PvP to the WvW side or PvP or the hideous hotjoin PvP. Not only that, but guilds should be able to build ranking by winning matches in 5v5 tournament play as well. This game should not be called Guild Wars if there is no ranking system separating the guilds!!!!
Every major game that has made it to E-Sports has some sort of ranking System, Starcraft, LoL, and Counter Strike, to name a few. Hell, even GW1 had a guild ranking system! If GW2 is suppose to be an improvement for GW1 where the hell is the ranking system!!?
I got GW2 expecting great things. I came into this game expecting to love it just as much if not more than GW1. However, so far its got my hopes down. Anet claimed that GW2 would be the most revolutionary MMORPG but as of right now has failed to deliver for me as well as many others I’ve talked to. I think we can all agree that there is nothing revolutionary about about a game that has no PvP ranking system.
Honestly Anet, right now it looks GW1 had better PvP than GW2 will ever have!! You had all these years, and over these years you continued to neglect GW1 to build GW2. I think most of us GW1 players were alright with that because we could look forward to the greatness GW2 would have. But what are we looking forward to now? GW2 isn’t what you said it would be. You let GW1 decay and rot so you could release a game with no ranking system? You left all us GW1 PvPers out in the cold in this game of GW2.
Right now GW2 5v5 PvP tournament play has nothing for players to strive for. There is nothing separating our accomplishments from others except maybe the amount of gems or tickets we have. Where is the competitiveness in this game? What are our guilds fighting for? It is not secret that this games PvP player base has dropped since its release and that should be the opposite. Right now I’m pretty sure Starcraft Broodwar, a game made in the 90’s, has a higher more active PvP playerbase than GW2, a game released just a few months ago.
Anet if you’re waiting for later to release a ranking system why? Your PvP player base as well as your hopes to be an E-Sport game are disappearing in front of your eyes. I’m saying this because I want to keep playing GW2, I do like the game, but I want something to strive for, something to separate my accomplishments from others. I don’t want to find myself switching games after all those years playing GW1. I think a lot of players feel this way.
