let me quickly preface this by saying that I haven’t played any PvP in GW2 yet. I wanted to learn the mechanics first (like I did in GW1).

everything I’ve learned about PvP in this game so far makes me go “huh?!”.

the addition of WvWvW. a format that is, to anyone who’s spent any time at all thinking about it, obviously utterly impossible to balance. how much time are people expected to keep playing it (independent of incentives on one side and invisible hordes on the other)? huh?!

structured PvP without a ladder system. if you would sit down with the goal of designing a system to guarantee maximum frustration for everyone involved, after what I’ve read so far, it seems to me that what we have now is probably what you’d come up with. and that’s not even touching subjects like professions being optically indistinguishable from each other and other minor nitpicks. huh?!

after GW1 this boggles the mind. honestly, from the side it looks like sabotage. whoever was in charge of these decisions needs to step down and allow someone who actually cares about PvP to give it a try.

I’m more interested in finding out who made the original Guild Wars PvP and where he or she works currently. I’m buying a game from that person without a single doubt.

GW1 PvP had its own problems. its business model was problematic in terms of achieving balance, the transitions between the different PvP formats was everything but smooth, personal rankings were never taken into account in the matchmaking of entry level formats, etc., financing for PvP dried up relatively early killing GW1 as an e-sport in its infancy (at the time people said it was never going to take off anyway, as it’s not as immediately watchable as SC2; LoL proved them wrong).

I’m not saying doing a good job on GW2 PvP (thinking of it from a serious e-sport perspective) should be easy. but right now I think you’d agree even some of essential basics haven’t been covered.

I think it’s sad because a great chance is being missed. look at LoL. GW2 is an absolutely glorious game in many respects and with some focus they still can make a great e-sport, that could win them more players, which would be a win for everyone involved.

I seriously kittening wished Arenanet was the developer I thought they would be. What a bunch of amateurs they can’t make things right and they are ovvilous way over their head trying to fix the huge freaking mess they did with this piece of garbge. It’s free for a reason, it’s god kitten Wal Mart quality.

I think the chance for GW2 to be established as a popular e-sports game has been missed. Unfortunately, I think that even if a matchmaking system was implemented at this time, there wouldn’t be enough players that would return to have an active ladder. I hope I’m wrong though, because I think GW2 is amazingly well done. However, I’ll continue to play WoW in the meantime (despite its terrible game balance), simply because I can play against people of my level at a consistent rate.

I pretty much agreed with most of your post except for the part in which you stated that the chance for GW2 to be an e-sport was gone. I think what everyone forgets is that LoL (currently and most assuredly a solidly if not the most successful a game has been as an e-sport) didn’t just poof into existence as the behemoth of the e-sport scene that it is now. Is there a camp of GW2 PvPers that came into the game with higher expectations that were let down by the PvP? For sure. But just because that camp of people may have left (hell even if 90% of the PvP playerbase got up and peaced the kitten out of the game) that doesn’t erase it’s potential as an e-sport for existence. Certainly not now, and I’d argue not even if things stayed the same as it is for 6 months with literally NO change at all – balance or otherwise.

There’s no doubt that it isn’t going to be nearly as EASY for the game as it would have been were there more features added for release, but it’s not like some PvP God will forbid this game from entering the pearly gates of e-sportdom if it doesn’t prove itself in a trial by fire within some arbitrary amount of time. That’s just absurd. Not to mention it doesn’t even have to become an e-sport to be fun. WoW’s PvP sucks donkey dick as an e-sport, but people love the hell out of it – and for presumably good reason.

I believe the main problem with spvp at the moment. Is that anet just simply did not put enough time and effort into finding the right formula to make it a esport. I was so hyped up a year or two ago when they stressed how good this game pvp(spvp) was going to be and i really believed them because a lot of people had high hopes for them. They should of never said anything about and people wouldn’t get their hopes up. For a game that’s been in development since 2007. You would think they had plenty of time to think of something better than what we have now…… Which is boring and broken spvp conquest.

My guild pretty much gave up, we all had high hopes when we came in and once we started pvp you can see all the problems right away. Now were clinging on that nov 16 patch deciding to either scrap this game and just move on.

Issue with pvp atm is

1: balancing
2: map types + gimics (just doing conquest over and over with stupid things like Trebs 1-2 shotting people and a instant win Lord is just boring…)

Ive seen some posts about not having enough reward for pvp but honestly…i play pvp for the fun of it, not to get something for it…So to me personally it doesnt matter if they raised glory from it or gave out rewards for tourney I just want pvp to be more fun as a whole =/

So more Battle ground types asap would be nice, followed shortly with balancing (but lets be honest no game is ever fully balanced…someone will always die to something and call it over powered)

Atm I’m not really interested in spvp because I don’t consider it so fun, while usually I really enjoy this kind of content in other games.
But for the balancement issues we all know, these are what I miss:
- maps with different mechanics (for example something like Battle for Praag and Serpent’s Passage in WAR)
- effects of sPvP on WvWvW campaign or in Pve (not as gear rewards obviously, but since there aren’t factions at least something for server would be nice)
- more gear/rune options to personalize a character stats wise
- the chance to display as appeareance what you have in Pve/WvWvW (cosmetic wise the system in sPvP is too random)

So if having thin skin has nothing to do with it, after all dota 2 and LoL work just fine, whats wrong with GW2?

Perhaps because everyone always blames each other for losing, even if everyone in the game is absolutely terrible. Even if half the people in the game are terrible and half are pretty good. Even if 3 people on the team are on their 10th game and the other 2 are professionals in disguise.

It’s easy to come back to a game where you think the fault lies with the players.

You also missed the part where I said GW2 needs loads of work, but that’s to be expected.

At any rate, this thread has become a Pitchfork Brotherhood, so any potential for actual discussion is completely out the window. Not that any actual discussion happens on this sub-forum anyway. It’s mostly “I agree” or “you’re an idiot”.

you are completely missing the entire point. The simple point is casual players should play against causals and organized teams against organized teams. GW2 doesn’t allow that, every other game does. Hence the barrier.

As far as sPvP goes, if you enter the random queue the game puts you on imbalanced teams more than 50-percent of the time and also allows you to leave games at will, thats one of the biggest issues right there. If people join games where their team is already losing they just leave the game.

Also, would be nice if they actually fixed the score board so its readable at the end of the game and during the match. In the random queu it just shows for a few seconds then automatically re-queues you. Maybe instead of wasting the resources on the heart of the Mists they should actually have built a lobby similar to how Wrath of Heroes has a lobby where you can form groups and talk to other players.

To be fair, Anet’s original plan was that casuals would all play 8v8, and tournaments would be for competitive players (although they gave you the option of solo-queueing and knowing you’d be playing pug vs premade).

Unfortunately, 8v8 didn’t turn out to be very fun for a lot of casual players, so they joined tournaments. Actually, I think Anet has done a really good job with all aspects of PvP—except taking care of the bottom level of PvPers. And now it’s hurting.

this game needs leaderboard in terms of some rating… tournaments are getting very unfair and almost unplayable… differences between players/teams are huge even after paid tournaments introduction…

give us some rated mode so all people can play against players of +- same skill or SPVP will die soon, none have fun when getting stomped over and over…

and no need to mension that 8v8 hot join is bad idea, its sure thing after some time…

Indeed. If they don’t fix the issues in the next patch I will be finished with spvp. I am a Ranger, I can get downed by any other class easily. Warriors and Theifs 1 shot me. I decide to make a tank build, get downed in 2 seconds instead of 1. I survive but do no damage. I go glass cannon. Can’t compare to the burst and dps of other classes, get downed in a second. So literally what is my point in even trying. I can’t get points for capping or anything if I can’t get my enemys off. Or if I die so fast. I am a pointless class at the moment. So are a few others. EVERYONE plays a Mesmer, Theif, or Warrior because they can destroy most classes in seconds. I guess if this isn’t fixed I will have to reroll for pvp.

…at least you’re not an engineer.
it’s pretty easy for us engies to get owned by y’all rangers unless we take a very specialized build for it… is there a build? xD
