On my ele when a ranger’s pet chases me across the map sometimes I just stand and autoattack it. The pet ends up killing me faster than I can kill it. Seems a bit off to me.

Anyway rolling a ranger right now, snagged the name “Rangers With Candy”.

  • On a related note you do realize ANet have confirmed that they are sticking to their guns about balancing the ranger based off of 100% pet up-time. The pet counts for roughly 50% of the rangers damage currently. Pets also die to aoes faster than skrit mobs and a single hard hitting non-autoattack unless it’s a bear… if it’s a bear, ignore it cause it’s a bad ranger.

Rangers are great. The buff to their downed state revive was immense. Extremely fast self-revive now.

My guild team frequently runs with 2 rangers in tournament PvP.

My biggest gripe has always been the absurd leash range of pets, chasing you across most of a map shouldn’t be possible. They hit like a truck and are in many cases tankier than players.

Not related to sPVP but PVP all the same, in WvW dropping AOE on bridge choke then running from Briar to Vale and getting mauled by 5 Ranger pets while their masters are still standing close to middle island makes my Ele cry. At least allow rallying off the damn things.

leash range is what makes ranger the ultimate ranged class in this game.

the arrow speed increase is a nice QoL change, same with pet attack anims.

edit: the implemented change is that your pet will now initiate its animation at a range of 10 or 20 as opposed to 130 ( the attack’s maximum range ).

ranger has 2 quite solid pvp builds imo, as bunker with high single target damage & survival trapper. bunker was good pre-patch, now it feels more refined. i am a happy beastmaster.

So I decided to kitten around on my ranger a bit today while farming glory to change things up. I ran berserkers with shortbow and greatsword and wow what a big difference that arrow velocity makes. I had a lot of fun on the ranger today for the first time that I could remember. The signet of the hunt is nice for catching thieves and others running away. Definitely tearing apart enemies. Only real problem I had is with backstab thieves for the first time I can remember, as once they go stealth I am kittened with a shortbow. Gs4, I tried for blocking backstabs and then lightning reflexes, but they an reapply it faster than my cd’s. heavy usage of stealth is really rough on a bow, Especially when weapon swap is on cd. Considering thieves make up 40-50% of teams now a days it was irritating, but overall I had fun.

Well I was trying to get a ranger bot killed today. She was standing in a lv 80 zone, SURROUNDED by grawl and a just-opened gift box full of dolls.

I had to keep dragging more and more mobs to attack her. She just stood still in her well, with her jungle cat dying and coming back, and her getting downed and recovering fully twice before finally dying about 10 mins later.

This is with no skill, no dodge, no movement. She stood still for the entire thing.

I have heard rangers are underpowered a lot. But bots choose them most, and from what I saw today, I will now be praying to Rangers before bed as they are GODS.

Braxxus, I have no idea how she revived herself the first time. I saw the pet healing her in battle but it didn’t finish, and they were attacking her still. A few seconds later she revived on her own.

The second time it was that Spirit or Nature tree thing that revived her. Her pet came back but wasn’t attacking anyone, strangely. Then she died and stuck around a while before finally succumbing to the army. I would have said impossible too.

Don’t worry man, elementalist has never been a faceroll profession like few kids believe, if you want to own others with an ele…you’ll need practice, loads of it, there is no stealth/steal/HS spamm or frenzy/bolas/100b

But I talked with a ranger last night with a build that let them dodge 6 times in a row. Was quite insane. Tried a duel with their ele, we were both even and couldn’t damage each other much. They switched to Ranger, I had the same success with them (barely dented their HP) but they had me at 30-60% most of the time. If we kept going I would have lost for sure. Definitely more tank than the pretty universally-agreed-upon OP ele tank builds.

The slow rangers just have not adapted to the changes good ones/good players have rolled them and are melting face. Not that its anymore overpowered then some other classes, just more faceroll high reward gameplay that the game did not need.

Doesn’t take much work to use Shortbow 1, and the additional damage from pet chomps also doesn’t exactly require much user input (i.e. NONE). It’s just another example of a class designed to have a very low necessary skill threshold, with relatively high effectiveness, one of the fundamental problems with this game overall.

That said, the DPS pets die super quickly if focused, putting the pet swap on a very long cooldown. (Even if they swap the first low health pet, you can burn the second.) Also, the Ranger obviously is susceptible to the various projectile defenses.

Unfortunately, I have been maining on a D/D Ele lately, which is naturally very weak against ranged classes (not a lot of ranged defense on dagger offhand — focus is designed for that) and since you are constantly fighting in melee range, a trap ranger with lots of slows and chills and a high damage pet are just a nightmare to deal with it. (And you can’t swap weapons mid-game anymore!) In my wild universe, I think that the skill cap on the Elementalist should form the skill cap floor for any class in GW2, but I understand that the game largely caters to less skilled players, and so it goes. That’s life I suppose.

An unkillable pet it’s an unuseful pet in pvp and to make it unkillable you’ll end up being an unuseful ranger too…or do you think that ppl would focus your bear instead of you like ai pve mobs?

I did play the Ranger before the patch. I started playing it quite a bit after the Shortbow rate-of-fire tweaks, and the class was solid then, including in high-level tPvP, although there were other classes that did whatever the Ranger could do, but slightly better. That’s sort of beside the point though, particularly the point I was making.

The class has gotten better with each subsequent patch. My only comment is that the latest changes, which definitely continued to improve the class, made it better without making it any harder to play, and the class has always been incredibly easy to play. That is a disturbing development trend. Care to elaborate on your “L2P” comment — which frankly made no sense in context?

Edit: I read your post history, and I see that you’re one of these typical MMO posters who defends your class, no matter how fact-based or rational the criticims leveled at it are. Seriously doubt that you will be able to provide any intelligent comments regarding the one-dimensionality of the Ranger class and low skill cap, but maybe you will surprise us.

let me understand this..Ranger didnt get any major dmg buff,just some fixes so that he can do the dmg more reliable and dont miss a lot.Both at his bows and meele pets…So hes OP now just because he can actually hit and miss less…….seems legit…

Its the VERY VERY few people(Like you) who say they had no issues with Ranger and go on about how easy it is to drop things yet never Post a video showing it, they go on about how they have no issues and that there an unstoppable force of Melandru!

Curb stomping everything left and right (Thieves Included). Bows do decent damage AND are always on point- Never Obstructed, Pets always keeping up with foes AND activating skills in and timely fashion – Sword does not root you in place. Traits form a nice Synergy right?

I remember being called a “Free” walking badge of honor/Getting curb stomped in PvP VERY Easy.

Pve ranger is Ok. PvP And WvW is something left to be desired but you dont have any issue’s No, not you. Everyone else is sick in the head, However.

I cant really say much due to the patch and Anet Actually doing something to make the ranger decent.

Since we are going into my past post, My main gripe was with Soth and its update, I thought it was a Useless skill. I opted for something more useful than it, thats all.

I am no Champion(others in the ranger forum got that title already), I mearly point out whats wrong.
And in no way am I inciting a flame war, Im just telling you how it is. If you choose to make this any bigger then it has to be then that’s on you, I however will take no part in it.

All I know now is that the patch has helped, Rangers pose more of a threat now. Ive Accepted that people are going to QQ since there easy streak isnt going to be easy anymore.

I’m sure the patch has helped: That was my point. An easy class was made easier. To me, that is a negative change. I do necessarily conflate “easy” with “overpowered.” I am talking only about the amount of skill required to play the class effectively.

Good Rangers have always been a threat, even if occasionally outshined by other classes.

Rangers downed pet heal is Astonishingly strong underwater… I killed a ranger underwater today on Capricorn (1v1) and we had mid, there were 2 sharks chomping on him and me DPSing him in his downed state, his downed damage ended up downing me, AND HE REZZED from his pet with 2 sharks and me damaging him. It was ridiculous, since you can’t stomp underwater. The ranger whispered me and was laughing “lol that just happened, that kitten is op.” I couldn’t believe it. We really need to be able to stomp someone underwater.

They fixed the “miss” bug and increase dps by 42% on some skills.

I’m honestly amazed this hasn’t gotten more attention, but I guess it’s just because most people avoid underwater combat as much as possible. Rangers are far and away the strongest underwater class, more so than Thieves, simply because of their UW downed state. Whenever I take my Ranger out onto Capricorn and fight at the Ruins, I just consider whatever damage I can do to opponents before going down as bonus damage. Downed state is when the battle actually begins. Unless you get 3+ players and sharks focusing you, you’re pretty much guaranteed to win any fight once you go into downed state. Fun as that is, it needs to be addressed.

When uw kill the pet healing the ranger first…thief spear #3 it’s very useful for this hitting both the ranger and the pet while blocking his incoming dmg…hard anyway but if you have a decent amount of hp you can kill him, worked for me many times…. This doesn’t mean it’s not annoying….maybe change the dmg dealing skill to not work during pet’s healing or just make it to stop when you get dmg just like #4… Right now those downed underwater tanks are pretty weird imo..

Or even better…give us uw stomp. Simple and effective.

Rangers downed pet heal is Astonishingly strong underwater… I killed a ranger underwater today on Capricorn (1v1) and we had mid, there were 2 sharks chomping on him and me DPSing him in his downed state, his downed damage ended up downing me, AND HE REZZED from his pet with 2 sharks and me damaging him. It was ridiculous, since you can’t stomp underwater. The ranger whispered me and was laughing “lol that just happened, that kitten is op.” I couldn’t believe it. We really need to be able to stomp someone underwater.

Second this. Had a similar experience on Capricorn a couple nights ago, except it was 3 players beating on a downed Ranger on the point for over 30 seconds. He was outhealing the damage, and would have rezzed had the game not ended.

Anecdotal evidence, to be sure, but it’s pretty ridiculous. Underwater stomps would be nice, but barring that, Ranger’s rez may need tweaks for water specifically.

I’m honestly amazed this hasn’t gotten more attention, but I guess it’s just because most people avoid underwater combat as much as possible. Rangers are far and away the strongest underwater class, more so than Thieves, simply because of their UW downed state. Whenever I take my Ranger out onto Capricorn and fight at the Ruins, I just consider whatever damage I can do to opponents before going down as bonus damage. Downed state is when the battle actually begins. Unless you get 3+ players and sharks focusing you, you’re pretty much guaranteed to win any fight once you go into downed state. Fun as that is, it needs to be addressed.

I can agree that I have certainly enjoyed the pet rezing underwater with my ranger.
