If you are so awesome and hate being dragged down by terrible players, then form a team or join a pvp guild. Then you can be guaranteed to have players on the team that at least deserve to be allowed in your presence. You’ll have no problem winning and jumping up ranks.

But if you hop in soloQ, then you will get matched with random players. Some great and some novice.
I hated the matchmaking last season in soloQ because it took 10 players and put the top 5 on one team and the bottom 5 on the other. Much of the time, one team had a decided advantage. I’d rather be in a match or system that didn’t predetermine the winner. I’d like each side to – at least on paper – have an equal chance of winning. If both teams are roughly balanced then your contribution becomes more important.

Ideally, you’d only be matched with great players and be matched against great players, but that’s a hard system to create and maintain. Pvp needs new players and needs lots of players, unless you want 45 minute queues.

Pvp is a team game. Like all team games you don’t have full control over the outcome. However, Ive still found that skilled players win far more than they lose.

Pvp this season really sucks. i Have a about 1500 Matches with my mesmer. Its not much for fulltime pvp players i know, but work doesnt let me put much time in the game. Normally i go through the seasons and finish on saphire. Im happy with that and have fun. This season i startet in Emerald -played about 50 games or so…and still have zero! Pips. I sometimes win…and more often loose. Yeah…ive given up. No more pvp in this game. pve lacks content too….so im just loggin in to do dailys and fractals..after that off to some other games…or do roleplay.

By the way, I am talking about mostly solo ques.

I see how MMR settling can create win streaks or lose streaks. But then why does my MMR never settle? I’ve played since day one of release and through every ranked season to date, with somewhere around 8000 matches played to show for it. What I notice are consistent patterns of win streaks and then lose streaks. Very rarely do I see win/loss/win/loss rhythms. I also notice exactly when the shift happens. Whenever I begin a season, I start out on a hot foot and usually win the first 10-20 matches with little interruption during that win streak. By “little interruption”, I mean that I may lose 1-2 matches during this initial run. As soon as the win rate begins to push around 75% of the initial run, strange things begin to happen. I begin getting put in to teams with players that are clearly less capable than the opposing team we are against and it results in complete blowout matches. The thing is, this goes on for as many matches as it takes to drop my win rate back down to around 50%. As soon as it reaches around 50%, I will always go on another win streak directly afterwards. From this point forward until the end of the season, I’ll notice the same thing happens at around 60% win rate. The match making begins to throw me in to losing teams that are clearly not capable of handling the players on the opposing teams. When I’m on those win streaks, it’s the exact opposite, I end up on the winning team. It lasts until I hit around 60% win rate. As the season goes on, the win streaks and lose streaks seem to get longer and longer as the whole number based matches played takes longer to bounce back and forth between 50% and 60% win rate.

I believe what you’re explaining to me. I’m confused because this pattern is definitely happening and I’m trying to figure out why. Can the MMR have such volatile change at 8000 matches to create such a scenario?

I noticed the same thing.
It became the disincentive to retire/give up leagues.
I could see the patterns and knew the outcomes before I played my first match.
The System has a value of how good I think I am, and does its best to keep roughly there. It doesn’t recognise significant growth and development of the player from in between seasons. Which is why in previous seasons I did well, then good for the amount of games played..didn’t play the next season..and this season found myself in my opening match against all champions with relative inexperienced players. The system felt I was ok,..but not good enough to beat champs..hence they get handed the easy win, i get dealt the crushing defeat..the natural order preserved.

Its always incredible the number of times people can explain that there is nothing on the back end for 50/50 and its a product of good matchmaking algos.

The problem with GW2 is laid out exactly in Josh’s post, anyone who doesnt understand it needs to reread it and then think about what having a pip system and mmr system working at the same time does to groupings.

Its not hard to get, it has been talked about to death here. Drop pips and just use pure MMR ala DOTA2, LoL, CSGO, OW. Good games just use MMR and add leagues as a fuzz for exact numbers. Really good games just give you your MMR and end it there.
