many games pretty close but some really easy wins in between
losses were in prime time
wins were at saturday morning
but queue times were about the same

I was also in mid gold 2 times this season, then i had more than 20 losses so i went to silver twice. At the moment im trying to climband push to gold again and it was exactly as you said, all the loses, the 100% of my loses were at 300+ points or less, my team and I couldnt get more than 400 points in all the lossing streak, then i can get win streaks of 5 or 7 but then i lose almost all my points that i got by losing 3 in a row, so my push is about 10 points/day and thats so slowly if you compare how fast i lost them.

100% of my games were in soloQ, i dont know if it has something to do with those weird lossing streaks.

Ok, so my rating has now decayed the full 700 points. When I get back home on Monday I’ll start playing ranked again, probably just one match per day so I can check everyone’s ratings as I recover my decay. This way, I can investigate how decay affects matches, if it does at all. Also interested to see how my absence has affected my rating volatility. I’ll have the results from the first of those matches up here Monday night. Looks like my decayed rating is in Bronze, so we’ll see how it all plays out.

You, uh, could also just believe the developers when they said that decay does not change the MMR used for matchmaking, just for “rewards”. So we already know that it will have no effect.

Your volatility will have increased. (It uses “count of three day periods” as the actor there, btw.) Again, thanks to the developers for letting us know that, and also, that they are planning on changing the way that happens during season play for S6.

Yet people still complain that it does have an effect, and I’m not one to dismiss people so quickly without any sort of information on my part other than how the Devs stated it is supposed to work. It doesn’t hurt anything at all to gather more information, and the information I have already gathered thus far has been helpful for myself and others and Evan is now looking into it as well.

Besides, my decay was already there due to my military obligations, so why not make the most of it and gather more data?

It’s funny you should say that. I usually have my best matches Saturday morning. Sunday morning is always a nightmare. Not sure why. I think it might have to do with who is queuing and lag, perhaps.

So, did my first match tonight. This was the match-up I got. Gotta say, this is one of the closest match-ups I’ve seen so far since I started this. Might have been a good match but Red Team had a d/c, so it was a slaughter.

Blue Team – 1379/1378/1350/1310/1213 – 1325 average
Red Team – 1358/1347/1347/1347/1325 – 1345 average

So, aside from the unusually close balance between the teams, I noticed two things. Can definitely confirm that decay has no effect whatsoever on who you get matched with. So for you guys that are complaining about decay messing your matches up, it’s not.

Also, my volatility went up quite a bit, granting me 42 points for the win, plus the 100 for decay recovery of course. Gonna see how many games this will last for and see if it still balances me out where I normally am or if the increase in volatility accidentally shoots me forward or back in rating.

So I decided that I won’t need to know the ratings of everyone in these decay recovery matches since I’m only looking at how decay affects volatility, or more so how your absence from the game does.

So, I played a few games tonight, had some good matches, and have now gone from 1378 to 1507 effective rating, not decayed rating. Gonna see how long I can ride this out, then I’ll see if it drops me back to lower Gold 1.

Decay won’t change it, but the absence will increase volatility. Since you can’t separate the two, as decay and absence use the same “time not played” trigger, you can’t distinguish the actual cause of the change.

FWIW, I’m looking into other possible stacking issues after dissecting the crap out of the substitutions problem.

Haha, I like how you phrased that. Best of luck! I know it isn’t easy (understatement) perfecting these matchmaking algorithms/mechanics.

Yeah, I’m not trying to distinguish the actual cause of volatility change. Evan already stated that a player’s absence causes their rating to be more volatile. I don’t really have any reason to do any testing on that outside of seeing how long that volatility lasts, how quickly it builds from a player’s absence, and if this feature can be used to a player’s advantage or exploited.

Oh! I’m completely sorry that I missed that reasoning. If I’d managed to read for content and understood that was what you were testing, I’d not have interjected at all.

Enjoy your science!

So, my rating has settled once again, sitting around 1520 now, believe I was about 1430 or so before. So if you are sure you can win matches, play Unranked for a bit, let your account decay, then come back and shoot up the ladder.

It was kinda nice having +/- 40 points again. Kinda useful if you feel like you’re stuck lower than you belong and you don’t want to find out a bunch of matches. Doesn’t seem to be exploitable though (which is good), because of course if you lose those matches for whatever reason you could destroy your rating. So it is a bit of a gamble.

On a side note, Evan, if you happen to read this, have you already made any adjustments to how matchmaking stacks teams? Just curious because I’ve noticed matches seem to be a lot more balanced lately in terms of the average rating between two teams.

Why doesn’t Anet realize this whole match making is broken af. Bronze and Silver is a nightmare for above-average players. They match you up with players below your skill rating and they expect you to carry your team because you get punished and lose a LOT of points if you can’t. It’s impossible to get out of this pit called Silver because the broken match making system looking at your league points rather than your MMR, so I keep getting matched with players way below my level, which results in losses, which results in me getting matched with even worse players, and yeah you get the idea…

I climbed out of silver1/bronze3 as well. Had a lot of bad teammates, but also, fortunately, a lot of bad opponents.
