I really like your idea, and I also really like the communication wheel from League of Legends. A simple wheel you can open up to be able to easily say you’re heading to a point, enemies are in the area, danger, retreat, etc. I believe it was opened up by holding ALT and a mouse button. It’d be really easy to integrate it or something similar into the mini map.

Pre-made or a group of people that have comm chat, builds that compliment each other, and prolly have been practicing longer together then the 5 solo’s….You can kinda see who is going to win.

I like to solo q , i dont have time to be commented to a team that may ask me to be there when i can’t. Solo’s vs Solo that match could go anyway depending how people play, communicate through map chat with pings or just chat.

To me, matchmaking is greatly improved. No 4v5 from start, rarely ragequits ( 1 out of 30 matchs), rarely faced premades( only on first day, when everyone was at same rating).

The only issue is about some match-ups where you lose to builds only. Actually, it’s the same problem i had vs premades , i had the impression we couldn’t do anything with 4 physical damage against guard + ele + engi. But that’s more a meta problem, it doesn’t really have to do with the leaderboard and matchmaking update…

I still don’t understand why I sometimes get queued against really high ranking people like OEggs and stuff. I can only imagine this is because of a limited amount of people playing that I get crushed by esports people sometimes?

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, retired #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

I played PvP today for the first time in a while and the first time since the leaderboards update! I played 3-4 games with some frands and they were all blowouts! Not saying it’s Arenanet’s fault! There probably weren’t enough people online to match our MMRs! It’s good that Justin is working hard to make matchmaking the best it can be, but I feel a big factor is that the community is tiny! The competitive community is even tinier! If you want an idea, there should be more work done trying to get more people to play the game! More people = better matchmaking! Every time I queue up for a ranked game in Counter Strikes, I always get 9 other people extremely close to my rating! That’s just because Counter Strikes has way more people playing!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

Might I ask why you prefer to solo instead of find a team? Is it that you don’t like the time and effort involved with finding other people? Is it the casual aspect of being non-committed to others?

Also, why do you not enjoy being put against pre-mades? Is it that they have an advantage with communication?

I only ask because there are many ways we can improve the situation, beyond just preventing the match ups entirely.

I am surprised that this question could maybe help solve the problem. If this is the case Id like to help by answering it from my point of view-

I have played a lot of tpvp with a core group of players. We played 4 times week for 2-3 hours each session as a regular schedule. It was often fun and certainly helpful with “organizing” a coordinated teamplay. But since we split up I definitely enjoyed the factor of no being comitted and being responsible for the scheduled fun-time of my 4 comrades.
Playing solo i can play whenever i want, stop whenever i want and dont have to “apologize” to anybody for not meeting the schedule from time to time. so for me its 100% the not committed factor.

As for why i dont enjoy being put aginst premades is their advntage in communication. From having played a lot premde tpvp i am certain that this is an advantage, but i dont think anybody doubts that.

Thats why solos vs premades isnt fair as the communication advantage is bigger than any class-combo or whatever that a team could have.

In one post you said, that your data would back up that solos can take out full premades. couldnt it be that those taken out premades are simply pug-groups that just got together looking for certain classes or ranks. voice communication is the big difference. i doubt, your data can show that. with the old tem queue you knew you would probbly meet a full team in voice chat. now those teams are in the only ranked queue there is…
and that is why i dont like to face premades (most likely with voice communication)

Edit: Idea: How about a tool like the current lfg where you have like 5 words to post your pvp profile like “meta AH bunker guard” “D/D celestial Ele” etc if your looking for a team that could use you. The problem with the current lfg would be that only the description of the group starter could be posted. this way each player could quickly describe his own playstile. hope this post is understandble as english isnt my first language.

It’s not just the communication that helps pre-mades. You need to also realize that it is a group of players selected because they are at least somewhat skills versus a pub of players at variable skill levels. Pre-mades are also more willing to cooperate whereas pub groups tend to resort to complaining and insisting that each individual player is in fact the most skilled and has the best plan.

I agree, I’d like to see what more we can do to encourage pubs to cooperate more. On my wish list is a team finder that analyzes all your games and suggests other pub players to potentially team with based on your past history with them.

Another idea is letting you keep your pub team through the next queue if you won.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Any update on those ‘radio commands’, that were once talked about?

A la CS:GO: One or two keybinds that allow you to quickly communicate with your team. The things I type in-game during the match is mostly the same:

1. Close
a. Incoming (Need help, defend, reinforce,…)
– 1
– 2
– etc.
b. Attack (rotate,…)
– 1
– 2
– etc.
2. Mid
a. Same as above.
3. Far
a. Same as above.
4. Focus target!! :p
5. Boss/buffs/Lord/Treb (Warning notification)
6. Etc.

This might help a bit, especially as most people don’t want to type during a match or for whatever reason.

And for more teams and such —> Daily, weekly, monthly automated tournaments. This gives a consistent, competitive environment with better rewards (maybe some gems again?) with a small entry fee (small! Something like a few tickets/points/whatever you get for winning a ranked queue).

No, I don’t think I missed the point. This is why I clarified, I wasn’t trying to say players hated solo arena (outside what you mentioned). Again, the reasons I mentioned, which at best, are only summary of the team’s reasons. The two big ones (in my mind) were that 1) people wanted a place to play casually with friends, but in a more structured environment than hotjoin. 2) Players had valid criticism of the solo ladder, which would be true for nearly any ladder that is solo in nature because Gw2 PvP is a team game. This is why we shifted away from solo/team to unranked/ranked.

Dota2, CSgo and league are team games. Why do those games offer solo matchmaking and solo ladders?

CSgo and League dont have solo/team arena like it was in gw2, as far as i know in league you have solo/duo and in csgo you always have like 2-2-1 vs 2-2-1 or 3-2 vs 3-2 so in league you can still have option like 2-2-1 vs 2-1-1-1

I don’t think population is to blame for solo matchmakings failure. Bad maps and matchups are. If you weren’t unlucky enough to get a tripple/quad zerker comp with overlapping classes vs team bunker/bruiser, the games were often really close and intense on high matchmaking.

But like Justin said, they prioritized unranked/ranked split over solo/team split. At this point gw2 pvp can’t handle both, the population doesn’t support it.

For the most part, I’m seeing decent matches. Early morning EST are a bit rough, but by late afternoon and evening I have had some really great games. A few blow outs and been blown out a few times but such is life.

To add to the pre-made discussion it isn’t just that they communicate and pick their team comps or can plan for their team comps it is that they know each others strengths and weaknesses and so know when to support each other.

I like to soloq because it is less hassle. I never know if I’m going to be on for 1 game or 10 games so I just log in by myself because I don’t want to ditch a team. I just wish there was a way to communicate better as a soloq player.

For the record, I love this idea:

I agree with Mysticjedi, the last few games I’ve had this last hour have been improved matchmaking, much closer, one down to the last seconds. More importantly, they have had consistency, not pingponging between a group that is crazily overpowered to one that is crazily underpowered. If any tweaks were made, I think they are keepers.

So you directly punish players who enjoyed solo by putting them in a team queue environment. As a solo player i should NEVER face a premade team even as small as 2 players queued together.

No, our intent is not to punish anyone, directly or otherwise. Contrary to opinion of some, I do believe solos can enjoy and have a competitive match against pre-mades. While watching the behind the scene data, I have often seen solos take out a full pre-made team, but far too often than we prefer it is the other way around so we will, of course, try to avoid them as much as possible

You should not have to make a premade team to enjoy the pvp in this game. Forcing people to premade to enjoy the game is wrong, we played solo and enjoyed it for a reason. You say its a team focused game, well forcing us just isn’t the way.

We do not intent to force anyone to do anything they do not like. We are aware of opinions like yours, and we will continue to do more to improve the situation.

Might I ask why you prefer to solo instead of find a team? Is it that you don’t like the time and effort involved with finding other people? Is it the casual aspect of being non-committed to others?

I prefer solo for multiple reasons. You dont have to rely on anybody but yourself being online, and the most important reason i prefer solo is simply that it is a COMPLETELY different game than team queue. ALL players react differently and play differently, the atmosphere is just completely different.

Being put against premades as a solo player is frustrating because they will always communicate and react to you. As an example, if i go to kill a guy holding far as a solo player, generally his team fails to react. If i do it in team queue, his duo or somebody hes queued with always reacts.

I had the option to play team queue before, i tried it for like 150-200 games or so with a friend and then stopped. Solo queue kept me excited for this game, i started playing much much more often just queuing solo and trying to progress the leaderboard for it, even if it was flawed.

Team queue isnt for me, if im ever against a premade of any size even 2 people it changes the game and makes it unenjoyable for me, whereas i enjoyed the hell out of solo queue.

And another note, League of Legends is a team based game but their solo queue is more popular…. hmm..

Would it be possible to add another feature before joining ranked matches that lets you pick roles. This way you have a better way of matching up teams more evenly and have a better way of defining roles for PvP. You could also have option to pick your ideal team comp.

I like the idea of making a personal profile. It could include that class you like play, your play style, and even include players you would prefer to be grouped with.

This could be really helpful for soloq players who just want to log in and play and worry about searching for others or committing to a team.

Lol just had a great 500 – 90 game, it was so much fun. You’re absolutely right about premades being able to coexist alongside pug groups. Its not imbalanced at all. Disregard any criticism about this shared queue, working entirely as intended.

problem right now is that full team comps with teamspeak are 80% playing against a mixed team with soloqers and duoqers or just all soloqers. which usually ends in a 500-0 for the full teamq comp. This makes soloq just not fun. If you keep facing full teams as a soloqer then u will lose 90% of the time. My suggestion would be to just get the old system back so that teams will face teams and solo players will face solo players. Also im not sure if the matchmaking actually works. The small amount of matches that high level teams play are not facing the teams that is even close to their skill level.

Right now i also think that leaderboards arent really working. I feel like the one with the most games played is able to get much higher in the leaderboard then the players that actually are much better then those players that play alot of games, ofcourse this can change in the future.

Waiting on a que, only to get thrown against the same group of premades (2-3?) sort of takes the fun out of everything. A bad loss isn’t too bad, but a couple in a row just sours a person. I went in looking for fun this evening, but now I want to rant about celestial engineers/eles, slow balance updates, etc.

Moreso, can’t really learn or gain any insight from being completely locked down/blownup by guys working together. Well beyond “Form your own team!” But even then I’ll still be a bad player just with help.

I had 3 ranked matches this evening, just to try how it work solo. Got matched against 2 premades, who play esl and one match was a class-stacking nightmare.
Wow i cant believe i write this, but i really miss the pre-patch matches and soloQ ^^.
Still hope it will get better after this “neverending beta-tests”, otherwise kitten this game xD

A picture sais a thousand words.

It basically proves the matchmaker still has issues even if it is in its beta form currently, this should not be occurring anymore in my opinion.

I honestly feel if a group of 5 decide to use one profession then they should at least go up against another team with a minimum of 3-4 from the opposing team to be on the same profession to be matched up against them.

Otherwise they can que for several hours to no avail.

I don’t mind solo v team. Only thing that I care about is team comps I feel that is something reasonable to get upset about personally. If your running solo its very easy to talk to your team while game is starting and make a plan i mean you have 2min to do it so its not like your rushed.

Edit

Just to be clear I know their is a disadvantage to being solo. Communication is obviously not as strong as a pre made and that is major in a game like GW2 but still can be worked around the team comp is a whole different monster.

So sick of premades in unranked. Make unranked a solo que only, and everyone will be happy. I solo que I unranked so I have non committed game play, but it is very annoying that I keep running into premades, not 2+1+1+1 but 3+1+1 vs 1+1+1+1+1. Force premades into ranked, leave unranked a solo que friendly environment. At this rate, I’m just doing to abandon and eat the dishonor if I run into a 3 man premade while I’m on a solo q only team.

I played pvp unranked queue for the past 2 days for about 8 hrs each day and completed 2 reward tracks. Of all the games I played in, I only encountered premade like 5 times (you can tell as it announces guild name at start), the rest are pretty ok except you might get whiners who decided to afk when things do not go their way, low lvls who pvp naked, players who die in 2 hits, trolls, 4v5, list goes on….
But hey, this is unranked you know. No adverse effect to your ratings, if things not going your way maybe do something out of the box and take it as practice. You cant expect to get stomped in unranked and qq on forums it is not fun.

Of course losing is not fun, winning is fun. I doubt even if Anet make changes to the matchmaking the problem will be solved, since even pros get bad games. You can expect more new and inexperienced players doing unranked for the water breather this winterday, so such situation will be more often.

Ps: I do rage sometimes in front of my computer. But now I think back, I did learn alot when getting stomped. So yea, good trade off.

worst part about the new matchmaking is the class win dailies. it just over packs the queue with the same 2-3 classes. that feature should be removed in the now, not “soon.”

also, been playing unranked solo mostly since the update. almost all of my games have been with and against all solos, biggest group was one trio and a handful of duos. only a few blowouts, a couple 4v5s, and alot of close games. between the 2nd and 16th matching was awful, i have seen an improvement sans the above comment.

Even if they did fix solo vs. premade, it’s not going to change the fact that Solo Que is all about RNG. It’s RNG because the people that you get are random and comps that you get are random.

Skill helps but the people that you get and how you play as a team will be the only thing that counts for the most part.

There will be games where people literally have no clue on what they’re doing and there will be games where it’s all stomp. This happens in League of Legends too, even at in Master/Challenger.

Frankly, I play a lot more of soloq since Tuesday, and it’s even better that it used to be. Sure, people walk around like headless chickens, but it was always the case, and at least the queues are shorter and profession stacking is less of a problem.

Although, when I play with 2 or 3 friends, I often get really unbalanced match (half of the time). I mean, we win by 500-70. Before the patch, it seemed to be better. But I noticed a difference since Tuesday: it’s less awful than it was.

I am honestly baffled by this thread. My experience with the new matchmaking system has been a completely different one as I elaborated in this https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/I-love-the-new-matchmaking thread:

Have been soloqueueing for a long time. I’ve been mostly playing solo for a lot of my games, even way back in vanilla and BC WoW I did almost nothing but exclusively Arathi Basin solo queue.

Before the new system I’d often end up in groups or against groups stacked in one way or another, that’s definitely long gone and that’s great. Makes for a way more balanced experience even though I still groan when I end up having to play a team with guard, engi, warrior, ele and necro. Also I noticed the quality of my teammates significantly improved. Under the old system people wouldn’t read what I typed in text chat and ignore me. Now I’ve moved up the ladder and I’m playing with people who are even telling me themselves what’s going on and what they’d like see me do. Plus people actually knowing how to stomp, prevent stomps, res, utilize Shadow Refuge, etc. It’s awesome. And a lot of the matches I play are really really close calls till the end. 30-40 points difference for the entire match and then 500 to 4xx final score.

So definitely good job on that one from me.

It’s been downright amazing and I’m having more fun with the PvP in GW2 than I ever had before. Before I reached top 500 rank my win rate was a bit shaky, but after that it even improved a good bit. Teammates are actually responsive to advice and… oh well, I already typed it out above no sense in doing it twice. I haven’t really noticed having to play against many fully organized teams as of yet. Most of the time it was only 2-3 guys from one guild. And I think I had had to help out 4 people of the same guild once. Funnily enough we lost that match iirc.

but I understand the reasons we don’t.

Out of curiosity, what are those reasons?

Is it hard to just add a second filter to the selection process?

Make it Ranked, Unranked and Soloyoloqueue.
Everyone would be satisfied.

If you argue now that Ranked and Unranked would lose all the Soloplayers that are going to join Soloyoloqueue then, well then this would even prove more that people like to play it this way and not how it is at the current state.

Quantity over Quality should never be an option to fit the needs of a gamers heart – refering to the “we have to reduce queue times, even if this kittens up some matches”. I would rather wait 10 minutes to have a good match. Everyone else can still join Practice mode for quick matches.

They won’t do that. They want players to get kitten d so they’ll eventually form teams, and possibly stick together to compete against the handful of competitive teams that are currently at the top.

I am at 90% and on my first ranked Que match (at 9.p.m. CET in EU) yesterday I was matched against the No. 4 player from the leaderboards. I checked all names from my team (added them to friend list so it is easy to see the rating and checked the names from the opponent team at gw2 score) and the teams are ok. Our team was like: No 64+No. 384+No. 881+me at 91% at this time + Someone at 78%.

Opponents team was like : No.4+ No.122+No.683+x+x (the last two are not at the leaderboards and I did not added them to friend list so I do not know the rating)

It is ok for me to be matched with good players but I am not sure if the Top 100 player is so happy to play with me or my teammates.

The que time was <1min. I guess it is ok to wait an additional minute but to get players at the same level.

Please check it

Being top 100 LB doesn’t mean they’re top 100 MMR-wise.

Could you explain this? I do not get it

i think butch was trying to imply that, someone could simply be farming ladder points by fighting opponents not of their MMR level by queuing in certain hours of the day where stronger opponents do not queue.

Yes, but MMR will always weigh more than LB position, in the current system.

yes but No.4 in the leaderboards and a guy with 78% in one match? And the No.4 is playing a lot of games during prime time. I asked if someone is pregrouped and the No.64 and No 384 were but not the 78% guy .
