I’m kind of new at the whole PvP thing, I played GW2 a bit around launch but didn’t stick to it, and just recently came back. So I went to the heart of the mists and tried “practicing” against the class practice mobs there. And I generally got owned very quickly. Only a couple of clean wins, lots of both me and the mob fighting from downed, but mostly just dying in a matter of a few seconds.

I couldn’t figure out exactly how things were killing me until I went up against the Elementalist. In the combat log, my vapor blade hit him for 185. His hit me for 1780-ish. I’m getting the same with other attacks like lightning whip. I’m hitting for the same amount I do when I’m in level-appropriate PvE. But my health is scaled to 17k.

I can’t figure out why the big discrepancy. I’m level 47, D/D Ele. PvP build: Celestial amulet, rune of strength, sigil of renewal, sigil of battle. Is there some gearing or something I’m missing? I thought weapons and armor were normalized.

The profession practice npc’s there are kittened anyways and won’t really give you any good insight on how to fight another player. Your gear doesn’t matter in sPvP, but it is possible there is a bug with those npc’s. Just make your build, test the damage on the golems, and then try it out in a few hotjoin matches and tweak as necessary.

They might be broken indeed. You might want to try your damage against the light-, medium- and heavy golems north-west of the Lost Agora (where you enter Heart of the Mists) instead. Fighting against the profession NPCs isn’t really a good benchmark anyway, as they don’t use utilities or pet/clone skills nor spawn them.
