Yes I do agree as it wasn’t much, but the funny aspect about the subject is that it was all we had left since they decided to take away necklaces and ear rings. Come April 15th, we will have more limitations in attribute flexibility within our builds. Yet we don’t have this issue in pve, until anet decide they need to take away customizability in that area as well.

The cost of mistakes are so much lower in PvE. Most PvP players are way more skilled than our AI, so you can get away with bad builds for much longer.

Justin you say you reduce the complexity in PvP to not intimidate new players.
And new players are most probably players not new to the game, but to PvP.
Means these players play PvE and/or WvW, both gamemodes were ALL stats and customization options are available, and food on top.
And you say these players are intimidated by a PvP system that has, right now, less option than the rest of the game, so intimidated that you plan to reduce the complexity even more.
I dont get the logic behind that.
Someone who manages the stats in PvE/WvW should be able to manage the bit in PvP.

So basically the implicit message is “in PvE even if you equip questionable/non-optimal gear and/or a kittenty build you’ll still be able to survive one way or another. A bad choice in PvP will cost you a severe defeat and a lot of casual players will be discouraged and frustrated cause they won’t be able to autopilot through the game”.

This upcoming balance baffles me. I really don’t understand how this patch will be beneficial for hardcore PvP players. The devs are trying to dumb down PvP to make it more appealing to casual gamers in order to enlarge the PvP player base. I played GW1 for 6 years, PvP was amazing, and I bought gw2 because I had very high expectations considering anet reputation. Now after 2 years I know (we all know) that gw2 pvp will never be an esport, hardcore pvp players are just a negligible minority, a lot of very skilled players have already left the game (at least in Europe) so MY impression is that devs are just trying to make pvp even less challenging in order to attract the masses. This is not innovation, this is trying to save whatever can be saved. Maybe i’m wrong, i REALLY hope so.

PS: Don’t even get me started on the new rank system…..

Just curious how the soldier’s and cleric’s amulets will look.

Will they just be the same stat spread as the amulet + jewel?

Because I think most players would prefer some vitality on cleric’s and some ferocity on soldier’s.

As a player that likes to play all three modes of GW2 (PvE, WvW, sPvP) the mode I find most frustrating is sPvP.

I love experimenting with builds, this was one of the reasons at the start of GW2 I started to really love & play sPvP. It was so much more easier to experiment but even at the start, because I also like PvE & WvW.sPvP slow started to frustrate me more & more.

Playing sPvP did nothing for the rest to the game and because of differences in build structure options (sPvP stats amulet + jewel + crit cap) most profession builds don’t carry between sPvP and WvW, PvE. Tying sPvP back into the rest of the game with gold and now the reward tracks have my interest back.

But as I primary get my enjoyment out of try different builds so see if they can be competitive reducing the options further in sPvP compared to WvW & PvE. As with lost of build experimentation compared to WvW & PvE (yes DPS is primary all that matters but that’s PvE mob encounter / design problem), problematic matchmaking & no overall prestige goal to aim for. sPvP has me thinking other the jumping in for rewards to help in other areas of the game I’ll give sPvP a miss.

What are your arguments for the fine-tuning approach that jewels give? What exactly did it open up? What is now going to disappear? I’m genuinely interested in both sides of this one.

I’m not sure the jewel change will yield a ton of arguments for those unhappy with the dumbing down of the game. However, you’re ignoring all of the other things that being changed to “dumb” down the game.

The rune changes have countless examples of changing people’s build. I don’t have to give you examples, just search your database of all players above rank 30 and see how many of them currently mix and match runes to get a playstyle that they like.

I say this not just to complain about the change, but also to congratulate the developers on making a very build diverse game that is fairly well-balanced. In fact, with the exception of warrior healing signet, elemental love, and some tweaks to certain OP abilities/traits for various professions…the game is about as balanced as you could expect.

Removing the build diversity makes no sense and your logic makes no sense if you really think about it. New players were already guided/defaulted away from mixing and matching runes/jewels/etc. If new players were mixing and matching totally dumb combinations based on bad UI, then I could understand the change.

The fact that more advanced players mixed and matched is not a sign that “mixing and matching” was a problem. It’s just another indicator of skill and experience, which is what every game should aspire to have. If mixing and matching created OP builds that were better than the defaults, then that is a specific problem to address…not evidence that build diversity is a problem.

Again, I say this in a complementary way because you’ve already gone through a lot of effort to make sure these extra options for players don’t cause any major problems.

I’m sorry to say this, but I’m going to break some bad news to you about your logic supporting this change…any new player who finds build diversity and mixing/matching gear more of a turn-off than positive aspect won’t be playing your game very long regardless.

You might as well make a first person shooter if that’s the players you want to attract because there are countless other things in the game play of GW2 that require far more learning curve than mixing and matching runes/jewels.

My perspective – As an elementalist, my choices are berserker, soldiers, or valkyrie. Right now, valkyrie is moderately useable with berserker’s or barbarian’s jewel. With valkyrie’s jewel and 30 points in our vit trait line – water – we have less than 14000 health. If you’re an ele with under 15k health in spvp, you may as well consider yourself little more than dead weight. Getting rid of jewels is going to make valkyrie’s amulet less of a viable option, to the point where I may not even consider it. That’s not something I’m happy about.
