Q: What is a "bunker"? Is it only certain classes and builds, or is it an Engineer item?

I am being serious! A lot of players today mentioned this, and a coworker of mine was complaining about it, however I had to stop the chit-chat and head off to work in another building, so I wasn’t able to ask him. So yes…what is it?
I play a Thief (P/D, D/D non-glass cannon, S/W), and I’m not sure if I’ve seen this yet in team play…but then again, I’ve only been playing in the PvP area for two days.

A bunker build is said all above, you may not notice them in sPvP as people just zerg everywhere. But if you change your thief to pure glass cannon and find a gaurdian or elem on a point that you cant get away with 3 or 4 hits to kill them, thats probably a bunker.
The best class at bunker I believe is the guardian. It gets a lot of retaliation and most of its interrupt abilities push you off the point so they can cap it while you fight them ( so annoying). Other good classes are the Elementalist and I’ve heard the engi as well. Our tPvP team is running with necro bunker, his build is quite strong. The trade of for bunker builds though is they can hold a point forever, even against 2 or 3 foes, but they can’t kill those 2 or 3 guys. They may eventually wifdle them down but usually cant kill them. Though I have seen some variations that are strong defenders with a good damage output.

A build focused on staying alive, lots of healing, dmg reduction, cooldowns to avoid burst, good condition scrubbing, and usually some passive dmg like high uptime on Retaliation or some Condition Dmg.
Oh and usually some good CC to keep people off points.

Technically any build designed to fight on a point against multiple attackers for an extended period of time is a Bunker.
Guardians, Elementalists, Engineers, Rangers, and Necros all have viable bunker builds. The best / most potentially problematic to game balance are the first 3.

On the other hand bunkering is sadly necessary currently…
I play a bunker Engi. I’ve tried different builds but sadly I haven’t found anything capable of stopping the Backstab Thief instakill.

Huh? As a bunker engineer I’m not sure you’re actually a bunker if you’re still capable of dying in less than 3 hits.
Do you not have > 2.8k armor, > 23K HP, and points in Inventions and Alchemy? (particularly the trait that gives you protection on CC)

A bunker is a defensive military fortification designed to protect the inhabitants from falling bombs or other attacks.

Thank you all very much for answering. For Bunzy.8674…thank you for the very general description of what it was. I would never have known that, being a 32 year old man who previously served in a military. The question was obviously about GW2, as it was posted in GW2’s forum community, within the Structured PvP sub forum. But hey, whatever.

Every class has there own version of the tanky bunker build (thief included). Its just high survivability usually coupled with healing and a bit of cc and low dps. However since most builds rely on boons there are some hard counters. Mesmer is the best equipped overall to disrupt the rotation with the proper utility skills.

Can someone elaborate on this ranger bunker I here often enough about?
I can assume it revolves around GS for the passive evade on 1 and 12s of invulnerability from “Protect Me” and Stone Signet, but what about attributes?
I don’t need a full build break down, but some toughness/health numbers would be appreciated.

‘Protect me’, unless recently changed is not a good choice for bunkering unless the node is neutral, as it actually stops you from capping or defending a point. If an enemy is on it and you’re on it with ‘protect me’ it’ll neut or cap. Same goes for Elixir S and as far as I know any form of invulnerability.
Not sure about Stone Signet, but I’d bet it the same issue applies to it.

Thank you all for your responses. I wish that there was also a “helpful post” flag instead of only the “Answer”, as they all helped. In the end, it came down to TGSlasher also elaborating on how I can find out if I am indeed fighting a bunker (and thus wasting my time, where I should move off somewhere else to be more beneficial to the group).
