Rank 5X = Dragon?
This was annoying to get since I am posting off my phone. Here you go:
Grouch can you give a vague idea of who will be future dragons (60, 70+)??!?
ALSO with the change to jewels, will I still be able to run soldier zerker, or carrior rabid or whatever?Everyone in the upper mid 50’s and up will become a Dragon!

What? I played HA/GvG for several years before it became unpopulated. It only really became “dead” in the months leading up to GW2. The majority of casual HAers didn’t even achieve a Tiger emote. That is why the actual PvP community of GW1 was so competitive. Rank Nine One Fame At A [Time].
Rose colored glasses much, all you have to do is search gw1 ha dead and you will find that by 2010 people were already talking about HA being dead. GvG was dead not too long after that(You could still play either with a group of guildies, but there was all of like 10 competitive teams in each). Most of the pvp scene died thought because of the people who played it. Was never any new blood because the higher ranked players didn’t teach, and even moreso freaked out at them. (FYI I was a tiger by then)
Unstable Shield, Unstable Light
Ultimately, the rank levels in PvP were out of line with all other forms of progression in this game, on the same level as the ultimate xxx from WvW. Now they’re being changed to make sense in the perspective of GW2 achievements, not GW1 achievements.
When push comes to shove, they’re kittening off maybe 20 people with this change. They don’t care about your tears, this is for the greater good.
I’m pretty sure they care about the complaints of their loyal playerbase. They’re not bad people. They realize that blood sweat and tears need to be rewarded.
If anything we will lose a significant playerbase. Completionists will stop playing PvP. The competitive scene will likely dwindle. High end pvpers who wanted proper balance and feel shafted by this will leave.
So you’re left with people grinding out dragon rank to go back to PvE? What is left if the competitive scene is coming to a swift halt. They have made no mention or indication if a proper reward system. Supposedly we will get ladders at some ambiguous point in the future but they’re essentially eliminating a feature that incentivized many people to actively PvP. Whether it not people considered it a grindfest is irrelevant. It was a mode of progression and the scales are drastically being tilted.
So please—anyone—explain how a ‘meaningless’ rank is going to increase playerbase.
I’d actually say that completionists will be far more drawn to pvp after this change to achieve maximum rank and get the titles, etc.
Dragon rank being completely unattainable drove most of them away from pvp a long time ago.
If they are going to make current R55 become dragon R80, it should be character bound not account wide. Just like PVE.
The only exclusive skyhammer stream

I mentioned that completionists would be drawn when I said people would mostly just come to grind out dragon rank then go back to PvE.
At the end of the day, though, you have to wonder: is this what PvP needs? I think not.
Keeping something close to unobtainable for most is a good thing imo. It means that people feel like they are on a journey to something.
They couldve added 20 extra ranks. But then again, whats bigger and more impressive than a dragon? A god maybe? :O

…what?
How would they differentiate rank already earned? I doubt they were keeping track….
How about they just not touch the system at all? Or scale the boost so it puts r70 at dragon and everyone else gets scaled accordingly?

A larger sized dragon every 20 ranks.

I really feel like people are forgetting the ability of anet adding rewards(like finishers and other pvp exclusive items) to the Leaderboards and other tournaments that could be added. Of course the first thing they have to do it get people to actually play spvp, and I think this is the first step. If the “high level” pvper leave because their “I played a million hours” rank gets changed to “I played 1,000 hours” then why have you stayed for almost 2 years with the crappy system that was in place?

In not forgetting any of that. I am focusing discussion on this one aspect to avoid derailments. I don’t like talking much about what’s not been confirmed such as ladder rewards. Yes they said its coming but not when it how good or bad they will be.
As for why I play the game I fell in love with the style and flow of combat. I adore spvp both in gw1 ha, gvg and ra as well as gw2 spvp. I also quite enjoy the rank system in both games. Why are people so adamant about pushing this 5X= 80 if its not going to bring in more players than it loses? I’m still waiting for an answer to that question.
I really don’t care overall, but after some thought I think it would’ve been a fairer compromise to rebalance so that rank 70 is the new rank 80. 70-80 is ridiculous, but we can see r70 is possible in a year or so now with dedicated play and 1000/1500 for wins.
This way, people at the front end of the curve who’ve hit 70 get rewarded as dragons, but only them. No one’s feelings are hurt, and we get a new rank 80 that is actually possible for more pvpers.

Exactly this 100%
I have not seen a single person complain about this. It also looks like the most frequently recommended solution that keeps being posted by various people.
I’m not saying its the perfect solution but I would love to see this implemented instead.
Also, in the topic if feasibility someone did the math and if the current reward system had been in place since launch (the one in place now, not the April 15th patch), we would have seen the first dragon rank at 11 months after telease. I imagine with the new patch it would only take 6 months if they make 70 the new 80. Probably 2 months if they make 5X the new 80.
I’m quite happy, it won’t take me 6hours for like 15% progression, I’m going to get my life back. Reward the player skill and not the lack of life!

I understand what they are going for. They want to make this feel like you are leveling in PvE. Rank 80 = Level 80. Of course it’s going to take a lot long to get to rank 80 than level 80, but I’m guessing they want a similar feel to that system. What they don’t understand is that the current system caters to a certain type of player. Not everyone wants things easy. Some players love what’s called “effort justification”. They put in a lot of work and time and they want a reward that proves that. If there is nothing in the game that can show that experience and effort, then it sucks.
Personally, I don’t like the change. I love hearing stories about players we all know getting to rank 70 and I was hoping to hear a story about rank 80. It was truly the legends of this game. It gave the game a sort of…mystic quality? It was so cool to hear that someone finally got dragon rank in GW1 and to see it for the first time was so cool. Now…everyone is going to be stomping with dragons eventually. Rank 55 isn’t that hard to get. I’m almost there after about a year. That said, I barely played PvP the first few months AND the amount of rank you could get per match was WAY lower.
I felt like this game already lacked rewards like the ranking system, and now that one is going away too? What happened to things like in GW1 where you could get a cape lining if you were a great player who won in tournaments? What about the statues that got put up in your honor? There’s like only one because there’s hardly any sponsored tournaments. It’s rewards like the rank system that put the best/most active players on a pedestal and say “See, it is possible” to everyone else.
Not everything should be achievable by everyone. There has to be some rewards that only the elite few can obtain! Pokemon doesn’t hand you pokemon in stacks of five to make the climb to catch them all achievable by the average player!
Message me any time in game.

You speak for the soul of gw2 we had all longed for before the game came out.
There are pvp rewards only a few can obtain – such as tournament finishers. and which take actual skill. How about we tell tales of them?
The bit about the ‘mystic R70+ legends’ did make me laugh. Farmbots with dragon finishers sure think a lot of themselves.
or maybe we got fooled by 1 st april incoming

O.o There were 2-3 districts of id1 in HA until mid 2011. (And Adam’s McTiggers only consisted of 6 of those players). My main was banned and my second was tiger again by that point, as well. No, there’s wasn’t an influx of new PvP players in 2011, you’re correct. I wonder if that something to do with the fact that the game was 6 years old at that point, and new players weren’t commonplace in any format of play in the game by then. HA and GvG were indeed very particular in group forming, but that was because the nature of the format was much more competitive. If a team was running a particular team composition, and you weren’t capable of the role or given build… What’s the shape of Italy? – Boot, Soz.

I’m not saying that there’s not farmbots that are 70+. But what I am going to say is that the vast majority of rank 70 people I run into in team and soloq? Legit as kitten. That said, I don’t really care one way or another about the change. I play PvP for the challenge and the wins, not finishers. You show your skill by playing well. Not that I don’t want rewards and a progression system — that’s important — but synergy in a team trumps that, in my book.
Anyhow, I’m not convinced this is far to the players who put in the time to get to 70+. But at the same time, if this brings 1000 pvers into pvp, and even 250 like the mode enough that they stay around and compete? Isn’t that a win? I think it is.
“Is it uplevel ranger season yet?”
On RU, they said that ranks aren’t going to be ‘the pvp prestige reward’ any more — that’s going to be the ladder rewards. Where hopefully skill will determine the prestige, not rank farming.
Not concerned about skill at all. Just sad to see one of the last remnants of gw1 PvP disappear in this game.
Lol at the people who think the high ranked players are not good at this game.
Sucks for the other 70’s with me, that all these 55+ are getting a free ride up. Had to work for it, and had a ton of experience. I know mechanics of every class, rotations, and how they work. There are people with High Ranks that don’t even have marauder or ravager yet, and those are the people who put the most time in Team queues rather that hotjoin/skyhammer farm. I’m at 71 and I don’t even have Ravager yet.

Lux, I agree this might seem like a swift kick the gut as you previously went from being “among the top 100 players of rank” to “among the top 1000” or so. That is rough.
However, you are still among the top X players in terms of skill, so when ladders DO come you will get some kind of reward – and one that no skyhammer farmer ever could get!
The main point is that rank is now a goal to shoot for, but they will add other systems for the most competitive players to distinguish themselves! I think that could be win-win!
I agree with your approach and perspective and like it or not I am pretty much forced into your perspective as well since I can’t change what they’re doing, I just have to accept and move on.
Furthermore, since I know several of the players at my skill level and higher won’t be playing because of these changes, it will just make it that much easier to perform and place better in the ladder system and farm those rewards.
I definitely look forward to that, but while this problem is here and there is still time to fight for a change I want to know I was voicing my opinions and doing all I can to prevent this from happening if at all possible.
I definitely won’t quit the game. I may complain but I love the flow and combat. I just wish it had proper dev support. gw1 devs loved their game. I have no idea what these guys are doing. I’m sure people like grouch know what they’re doing and he is in no position to stop them so he has to try and convince us its an OK change.
