I understand how, at first sight, it seems that an entire roster competing at a tournament would go against the traditional structure of an ‘all-star’ game. Those usually consist in picking the best players at their role independently from their team’s performance and, most of the time, this requires picking people from different rosters. The point is to get the best individualities. However, it is not at all impossible for those individualities to be all in the same roster, and that is what is happening in GW2 with Team Mist.
Team Mist (and previously TCG) has always put a great emphasis on individual skill and Tage’s argument makes sense. Their players should not only be considered as having mastered their class, they also often have made innovation when it has come to creating builds or gameplay.
I will only discuss the case of Tage here because he posted that message and because he might not be as visible as other players of Team Mist and, therefore might be underrated. But, clearly, Tage is the best PvP player in Guild Wars 2. Ask whoever is on this Gamescon List, I think they will all agree: Tage is a monster. And one of the worst kind; a monster that cannot die. I bet you that none of those all-stars will disagree with me. You might be an excellent player, the best of your class even, you are not as good as Tage.
This is why a Gamescon without Tage would be ridiculous. I really feel that, among pvp players, there is this consensus that legitimates that Tage be flown to Germany. That consensus among the pvp players is, I believe, the criterion people should use to vote. While there’s always debate on ‘who is the best X,’ there surprisingly is consensus about the fact that Tage cannot die.
This unusual consensus, you can find it concerning other Team Mist members. I will not go through every single case but, for instance, among the elementalist community (of which I am a part of), saying that Denshee is the strongest is very much accepted.
The second (and opposite) argument that goes against Team Mist being invited as a complete roster has been to say that bringing such an organised team would lead to an unfair game against the NA team. This, to me, is an illegitimate argument. You cannot say to a player who deserves this spot based on his individual skills that he should not participate precisely because his team is too strong: it is absurd.
