Hey guys,

After reading many posts on the forum, it is clear that the community is demanding a ranking system for TPvP (and for very legit reasons). While it is unfortunate that Anet did not have the foresight to prepare this ranking system prior to the community’s disappointment, I am absolutely positive that they are doing as much as they can to implement a ranking system. They read the forums as we do, and they understand their community’s needs very well. Surely they now see the benefits of a ranking system, and are working tirelessly to give the community what it needs. Have some patience, as it will take time – but rest assured, they are working on it.

That being said, in order to help the devs create the best possible ranking system for the game, I believe that we should come together as a community and propose how the ranking system should be molded to our needs/desires. Again, I believe the devs know that a ranking system is needed, but rather than being REactive to what they produce, can we not be PROactive and help them create the best possible system? After all, we are the ones playing the game and the devs should know what we want to see once the ranking system is released.

To kick start this discussion, I would like to propose a simple, yet effective, way of enabling the “solo” player to participate and be more involved in TPvP: reduce the price of tournament tickets for creating a roster. How might that look? Simple: the cost is proportional to the amount of people on your roster. I.e. if you are solo-queuing, it only costs you 1 ticket to submit your roster. If you have two people, then it costs 2 per player; 3 tickets for 3 people; 4 tickets for 4; and finally the current system: 5 tickets for 5 players (or a full team).

I know that personally I would be more inclined to spending 1 ticket to solo-queue if there is a guarantee that I will be playing with players of the same calibre (hence why the ranking system must first be in place). And I also think that this balances out the risk-reward system better than the current one (where you stand next to no chance to win queuing as a solo, and it still costs you the same price to queue as a full premade).

So what changes would you like to see once there is a ranking system in place. Be proactive.

Thanks!

In an ideal world, I would like to see paid and free tournaments changed to ranked and unranked, both free to join in terms of tickets.

Winning ranked matches would let you advance on the ladder and give the increased rewards paid tournaments give now, and unranked matches would be for casuals, teams trying out new tactics and so on.

A matchmaking system would also be great, but I’m afraid it would fragment the community even more. There’s no problem finding people for free tournaments, but paid tournaments at the moment can have a long waiting time. If we divide those 2 player pools into rank brackets, then I’d assume waiting times will increase for both kinds of players.

Dunno, just thinking.

(class stronger than mine) is OP. (my class) is underpowered. (classes I beat easily) are fine.

Interesting idea. So far, the competitive PvP content has appealed more to casual players than competitive players, and the casual content has gone downhill fast. (In other words…8v8 has problems and low-rank players prefer to solo-queue free tournaments.)

So…it could work. I would definitely give it a try. The few remaining competitive teams would still crush everything in free tourneys to get tickets, and then crush everything in paid tourneys because of all the pugs, though, right? Unless I’m not understanding the idea correctly.

A final check: I haven’t tried queueing for a paid tournament solo. I thought paid tourneys were still premade-only?

Thanks for your replies guys.

Kage: I know where you are coming from with ranked and unranked matches – I have played my fair share of games with this kind of system. What I think GW2 does differently (and better than most games) is that it rewards you for literally everything that you do, and so I don’t really see a place for unranked matches in this game.

I believe the devs are smart enough to create a system that rewards players’ rank based on every game that they play, whether in the form of spvp, or free/paid tpvp. Or maybe my views are too utopian…time will tell. Either way, thanks for your contribution.

Nevir: I totally get what you’re saying. Competitive teams would definitely (and are currently) crushing free tournaments. However, I think that if there is less risk to join paid tournaments, this will encourage more players to participate. If the admission was lowered, this would encourage more solo/duo/trio players to participate in paid tournaments, while at the same time encourage competitive teams to get 5 of their best together and join (because they know there is more chance to face pubs rather than other 5v5s – if they are new to the game/lower ranked).

I’m not sure if I’m making myself clear, but essentially the idea is: lower the cost to encourage more solo/duo players to join paid tourney queues, which will lead to more teams (as a solo/duo team, your goal should be to get 3rd or 4th for the 4 tickets and chest – that’s at least double the earnings from what you initially invested). More teams also means easier victories for the very competitive teams (until they get higher ranked, where most of the teams will most likely be 5v5 premade).

Hope that clears a few things up, and thanks for your contribution as well. Great ideas – let’s keep em coming!
